Chapter 137: Chapter 136 - The Hill
Asmodeus soared toward the royal harbor of Athens. Looking back, he saw an organized formation of wizards flying on broomsticks behind him. Each group consisted of five wizards, with one leading the attack, two in midfield, and two covering from behind.
There were 400 such triangles in total. They flew in triangular formation, mimicking the flight pattern of birds.
Those directly behind Asmodeus were the most battle-hardened and widely acknowledged as the strongest individuals in the Order of Fire. In the event of battle, they would be the first to receive blows after Asmodeus, clearing the way for the others.
Those who located in the end of the formation were less experienced, some not even specializing in combat but rather in healing and defensive magic.
Asmodeus nodded satisfactorily upon seeing that the soldiers maintained their formation impeccably, looking just as they did when they took off. After a few more glances at the wizards' flight, Asmodeus shifted his gaze to the castle gradually emerging ahead. Spotting the red castle, Asmodeus began scanning below, to the right, and to the left. He searched for Dornish armies, the Tyrells, and the specific group of Dothraki that Daenerys had sent separately.
After flying for a couple of minutes, he noticed a large gathering of people moving from the southwest towards the royal harbor. Asmodeus cast a spell on his eyes to enhance his vision.
"Eagle eye."
Initially, Asmodeus's eyes glowed red, as they always did when he used magic, but then gradually turned golden, and his pupils narrowed. Upon closer inspection, he saw banners bearing the Rose family crest.
Although from a distance, this gathering seemed disorderly, upon closer inspection, he noticed that the people were moving in a fairly well-formed formation.
Ceasing his scrutiny of the Tyrrell's army, Asmodeus signaled Athena. Athena tilted slightly and adjusted her flight trajectory so they would approach the Tyrell army but not head directly towards them.
Observing Athena's movements, the wizards behind, on broomsticks, began to adjust their route gently, maintaining the previously assigned formation.
After some time in flight, they approached the Tyrell army at a sufficient distance. Initially, the Tyrell soldiers were frightened by the dragon, but they were quickly reassured by the words of Loras Tyrell and Randyll Tarly, who were leading this expedition.
Asmodeus didn't want his troops to land on the ground, and it would be quite inconvenient to converse with anyone when Athena flapped her wings.
Therefore, he shouted to his soldiers, turning his head, "Keep course towards the red castle at minimum speed. I'll join you shortly."
Having said this to the soldiers, he spoke softer, directly to Athena, "You too, fly with them. Fly slowly, I'll catch up with you." "Roar."
Athena nodded gracefully and began to slow down.
Seeing that his team had already adjusted their course in the right direction, Asmodeus rose from his seat and retrieved his staff. With a sharp tug, it unfolded, transforming into a glider. Holding onto the glider, Asmodeus quickly leaped from Athena and, catching the airflow beneath her wings, flew towards the Tyrell army.
The Tyrells, seeing Asmodeus approaching in his recognizable attire, did not slow their pace. Instead, Randyll and Loras rode ahead on horses to meet him.
When Asmodeus landed, he saw Randyll Tarly and Loras Tyrell before him. "Lord Morningstar! Delighted to see you," spoke Randyll Tarly first.
After witnessing the power of magic in the battle at Highgarden, he held Asmodeus in great respect. Not only out of fear but also because of the qualities Asmodeus had shown, such as ruthlessness towards enemies, excellent leadership skills, and personal strength.
Randyll believed that such a person had the right to be king, hence his sincere respect for Asmodeus.
Upon hearing Randyll's greeting, Asmodeus nodded and replied, "Good day, Sir Randyll. It's also a pleasure to be in your company. The decisive phase of this war is about to begin, and having such an experienced commander by our side will never be a hindrance."
Hearing this, Randyll smiled contentedly but said nothing more. He had spoken before Loras, who was considered higher in status. This was only because he was currently the field commander, ranking above Loras in this specific moment, though it didn't particularly bother Loras.
Seeing that Randyll had finished his brief conversation with Asmodeus, Loras also greeted, "Good day, Lord Morningstar. My sister was very eager to accompany us to meet you again."
"I'm pleased to hear that. I hope to visit Highgarden again someday and meet Lady Margaery once more."
"We would be honored to host you again. Of all the Seven Kingdoms, I can confidently say that Highgarden is the best city for relaxation."
"Let's hope I have the opportunity to visit Highgarden again, and you have the chance to host me once more. But for today, we have another task." Saying this, Asmodeus pulled out a map from his pocket. It was a map of the royal lands, with a fairly detailed depiction of the terrain and landscape.
Asmodeus unfolded the map; it was similar in size to a standard A3 paper, making it inconvenient to hold and show something parallelly. So, Asmodeus snapped his fingers, and three chairs and a small table appeared nearby.
With a glance, Asmodeus indicated to Loras and Randyll where to sit, and he himself went to the table, carrying the map.
Seating himself at the table, Asmodeus spread out the map and used small rocks he found on the ground as paperweights, placing them at the corners of the map where necessary information was not depicted.
Seeing that the map lay stable and was not being moved by the occasional light breeze, Asmodeus pointed to a spot on the map.
"We're approximately here. Although the red castle is already visible on the horizon, it's too early to begin constructing the wall.
See? There's a good hill within the previously discussed radius, somewhere around +/- 3 kilometers from the city wall.
Your troops will be positioned there, and I'll send my people to assist you in setting up camp. While you're setting up camp, I'll locate the other armies."
When Asmodeus finished his monologue, both Loras and Randyll were satisfied with his instructions, but there was a sense that they wanted to ask something.
"Um, Lord Morningstar?"
"Yes? What is it?"
"Sir Loras and I don't have such deep knowledge of the terrain around the royal harbor...
Could you please explain more precisely which hill we should arrive at?"
Asmodeus felt a few of his nerve endings die in that moment.
"I meant approximately. I'm not asking you to pinpoint a specific hill...
You know what? I'll show you exactly where you should set up camp."
Saying this, Asmodeus gathered his map, and flames erupted from beneath his feet and hands. He quickly flew towards the red castle. After some time, from a distance, Randyll and Loras saw Asmodeus flying in the sky, engulfing a certain hill in flames. From afar, they couldn't understand the pattern he was drawing, but they definitely saw a ring of fire around a specific hill.
Asmodeus finished outlining the hill and, looking down from above, nodded satisfactorily before flying back to Loras and Randyll. After some time, Asmodeus descended from the sky and said, "Now, do you see where to set up camp?"
Both Loras and Randyll nodded.
"Good. When you approach the fire, simply say loudly, 'disperse!' And the fire will retreat. Understood?"
"Yes."
"Yes, indeed."
"Excellent. Lead your men there as quickly as possible. I'll fly off to search for the other armies."
When the Tyrell army continued its course towards the scorched hill, Asmodeus returned to Athena.
"How's it going without me?"
He stroked Athena's head and asked.
"Meow, meow, meow."
"Alright, alright, I didn't expect to have to burn a specific place for them to understand where to set up camp. If I need to do that next time, I'll call on you for help."
"Purr."
"Okay, let's fly east; there should be Dornish troops there."
Athena obeyed Asmodeus and accelerated in the eastern direction. After some time, Asmodeus finally found the Dornish troops; apparently, they had fallen slightly behind schedule when passing through the Stormlands, but despite that, they were already approaching the red castle, which was good news.
Thus, Asmodeus visited two more armies after the Tyrells: the Dornish army and the 20,000 Dothraki riders heading towards the red castle. He instructed each of them on where to position their army and what to do while awaiting the wizards.
As for the troops sailing with Daenerys, Asmodeus contacted them via phone; they would arrive according to the initial calculations, meaning they would be a day later than the others.
After answering various questions from the army commanders, Asmodeus headed to his own people.
Sitting on Athena, he said, "Guys, our direction is west. Start building the camp upon landing, a good one, even though you'll likely leave it soon. We should leave a good habitat for those who will be besieging the city."
"Got it!"
"Copy that!"
"Roger!"
