High School DxD: The Man Who Surpasses God

Chapter 9: Humans Are So Weird

[AUTHOR'S POV]

The simulated battlefield stretched out before Arthur like a scene from a nightmare.

A city that is reduced to rubble, its barren streets littered with craters and the crumbled remains of buildings.

Hordes of Xenomorphs hissed and screeched as they swarmed toward him, their black, chitinous bodies blending with the desolate urban backdrop.

Arthur stood in the center of the chaos, his glowing blue eye a beacon of power.

With a flick of his wrist, ten radiant blue magic circles appeared around him, crackling with energy.

Bolts of lightning erupted from the circles, striking the Xenomorphs in rapid succession.

The electrified creatures convulsed violently, their acidic blood splattering the ground as their bodies fell lifeless.

Arthur wasted no time.

With another gesture, he summoned a floating arsenal of ethereal weapons, swords, axes, spears, and daggers, all shimmering with the same blue hue.

Grabbing two swords, he launched himself into the fray.

The summoned weapons followed his every move, slashing and cutting in tandem, creating a buzzsaw effect as they tore through the swarm.

The Xenomorphs, relentless and unyielding, pressed forward.

Dozens leaped at him from all directions, their claws and tails poised to strike.

Arthur's blue magic circle materialized beneath his feet, glowing brighter as he invoked a new spell.

"Get lost."

A massive whirlwind erupted around him, sweeping the attackers into its vortex.

The creatures were flung into the air, their bodies colliding with debris and each other before crashing back to the ground in pieces.

The battle raged on for an hour, with Arthur showing no signs of slowing.

Each swing of his blades and every elemental spell left destruction in its wake.

The swarm's numbers dwindled until only a lone Xenomorph remained.

The creature charged, its elongated head lowering as it let out a guttural shriek.

Arthur stood motionless, his eyes locked on the alien.

Just as it was about to strike, a glowing blue magic circle appeared on its chest.

In an instant, the creature froze, encased in solid ice.

Arthur raised his palm, another circle appearing before it.

"Die."

He said calmly.

A massive orb of fire shot forth, engulfing the frozen Xenomorph in flames.

The resulting explosion left nothing but a charred husk.

The battlefield fell silent, the ground littered with corpses and puddles of acidic blood that hissed against the concrete.

Arthur let out a long sigh, exhaustion finally catching up to him.

He glanced at his stats, noting the incremental improvements.

"That's enough for today."

He muttered.

The desolate battlefield faded away, replaced by the serene calm vast ocean stretching into the horizon. At its center, Gaia lounged in the crystalline waters, her blue hair glistening as she turned to meet her emerald eyes on his figure.

"Kyaa! Arthur, you naughty boy!"

She exclaimed teasingly, loosely covering herself.

"..."

But Arthur stared at her, unamused.

"Aren't you way too old for jokes like that? Grow up."

Gaia smirked, running her fingers through her wet hair.

"Oh, come on. Can't a Primordial Goddess have a little fun?"

"You're acting more of a kid every time we meet up."

Her tone turned playful as her eyes roved over him.

"Say the 5-year-old acting like a grown-up. Speaking of growing up, You're starting to look taller than last time."

Arthur glanced at his reflection in the water.

It was true, he'd grown taller, his features maturing slightly, making him look like a young teen.

"Must be my growth spurt kicking in. Or maybe my stats. Either way, I don't really mind."

He shrugged, unbothered.

Settling into a lotus position on the waters, he closed his eyes to meditate, focusing on replenishing his Mana.

Gaia watched him for a moment, then pouted.

"Come on, Arthur. It's been ages since I had a decent companion who wasn't utterly repulsive. Entertain me! I'll even let you take a peek if you agree."

She put her arms under her breasts, making them look even bigger than it already is.

"Pass."

Arthur replied flatly, not even opening his eyes.

Gaia sighed again, rising from the water.

Her form shimmered as her clothes reappeared.

"Fine. Congratulations on another successful battle, by the way."

She said, sitting beside him.

"Shall we up the difficulty next time? Maybe next time we send you to space to fight an army of Yautja?"

Arthur opened one eye and gave a small nod.

"Sounds like a plan."

After a moment of silence, Gaia's tone turned serious.

"So, what's your plan for dealing with the missing humans issue?"

Arthur leaned back, his expression thoughtful.

"First, I'll talk to the werewolf girl about strategy. She seems smart for her age. Then, we'll head to Romania. Based on her description, I think I know who we're dealing with."

"Vampires. And the mention of Bucharest supports that theory."

Gaia said knowingly.

Arthur frowned.

"It's a shame I don't have an affinity for Holy Elements. Innovate Clear can't seem to be able create holy creatures like angels, either. It would've made this a lot easier."

Gaia chuckled.

"My Divine Power is tied to the planet's elements. Fire, Ice, Nature, and so on. Holy Elements are something else entirely. They come from that old prune."

"Hmm?"

Arthur was confused.

"Wait, aren't Holy Elements and Divine Power the same thing?"

Gaia shook her head.

"Divine Power belongs to gods like Zeus and Poseidon. Holy Elements were created specifically by God to combat Devils. Though, funnily enough, they don't work on Demons."

Arthur's brow furrowed.

"Aren't Devils and Demons the same?"

Gaia smiled knowingly.

"Nope. Demons are an ancient race that has existed since the beginning of creation, while Devils are just mutated Fallen Angels, transformed by Hell's forces after God banished them from Heaven. Funny enough, the first one to become a Devil wasn't Lucifer, but it was Lilith, Adam's sister and ex-lover."

Arthur was stunned.

This world's lore was deeper than he had imagined.

Before he could ask more, Gaia's eyes twinkled mischievously.

"It's morning. I suggest you wake up early to wake up your girlfriend."

Arthur groaned.

"Please stop calling her that."

Gaia laughed, gesturing for him to leave.

Arthur closed his eyes and instantly faded away.

As the ocean receded, Gaia's playful expression grew solemn.

Watching the clear blue sky, she murmured.

"I hope you become strong enough, Arthur. I can feel a storm approaching, and it's closer than we believe."

[ARTHUR'S POV]

I woke up to the soft morning light streaming through the window, yawning as I stretched my arms.

Something felt off, though.

A peculiar weight pressed down on my chest.

"Huh? What the..."

Groggy, I rubbed my eyes and looked down, pulling back the blanket.

There she was.

The little werewolf girl, curled up on my chest, her face buried against me.

Her soft breathing and the faint murmur of contentment made my cheeks warm with embarrassment.

Seriously?

What is her deal?

"Hey. Wake up."

I said, giving her shoulder a gentle shake.

She snuggling closer, mumbled something incoherent in her sleep.

"... KFC... Chicken nuggets..."

My patience wore thin, and I nudged her off to the side of the bed.

She tumbled over with a grumble, still asleep.

I sighed, pulling the blanket up to cover her small frame again.

"She's naked… again."

Shaking my head, I muttered to myself.

"This is starting to feel like a pain in the ass."

After taking a moment to collect myself, I headed to the bathroom to do my morning routine.

The hot shower of water on my face helped me shake off the awkwardness of waking up like that.

A few minutes later, I walked out.

Wrapping a towel around my waist, only to be greeted by the girl sitting cross-legged on the bed, now wide awake.

"Good morning, partner!"

She chirped cheerfully, her golden eyes glinting with enthusiasm.

I blinked.

"Partner?"

"Mhm! Since we're teaming up, I figured it's appropriate to call you that."

She said with a toothy grin.

Before I could respond, she casually stood up, letting the blanket fall away and revealing... well, everything.

I turned my head sharply, my face heating up.

"D-Don't you feel even a little embarrassed walking around like that in front of a boy?"

I snapped.

She tilted her head at me like I'd just said something absurd.

"It's just my body. I always do this back in my... home... Anyway, why should I be embarrassed?"

"Because it's inappropriate, obviously!"

I argued, now avoiding her gaze entirely.

She gave me a strange look.

"You humans are so weird."

She said with a shrug and then strolled into the bathroom like it was nothing.

I groaned, dragging a hand down my face.

"This is going to be a pain…"

I quickly dressed, just wanting to put the whole scene behind me.

A few moments later, the girl emerged from the bathroom, this time fully clothed in dark, fitted garments.

"You've had clothes this whole time?"

I raised an eyebrow, incredulous.

"Yeah. I didn't want to walk around naked with all the little kids here."

She replied nonchalantly.

I could almost feel my jaw falling to the floor.

"What?! Then why didn't you-"

She interrupted with a question.

"What's the big problem? It's not like you're a little kid."

"I AM a little kid. I'm 5 years old."

I said through gritted teeth, trying to keep my cool.

She blinked, genuinely surprised.

"Really? You look like you're 13 years old though."

Rolling my eyes, I countered.

"I'm just built differently, okay. But you look like you could be a 9-year-old. How old are you, exactly?"

"18."

She answered casually, brushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear.

"Werewolves age slower than humans. Physically, anyway."

I felt a headache coming on.

This conversation was way too much for this early in the morning.

Without another word, I gestured for her to follow me.

"You know what? Let's just get breakfast. Granny and the others should be done cooking."

In the dining hall, the smell of waffles and syrup filled the air.

Granny was busy at the stove, flipping another batch for the kids who crowded the table.

I grabbed a plate and quietly started eating while the girl dove in with enthusiasm, piling her plate high.

Granny turned her warm gaze toward us.

"So, how did you two meet, dear?"

She asked the girl with a smile.

The girl barely paused between bites.

"This morning! He wanted to help me with a problem I have."

Granny chuckled knowingly, glancing at me.

"Typical Arthur. Always the gentleman, ready to help out."

I focused on my plate, finishing the last of my waffles before clearing my throat.

"By the way. Granny, me and my… friend here are going to be out of town in a few days to help her out. I wanted to ask for your permission first."

I started.

Granny's cheerful demeanor faltered slightly, replaced by a look of concern.

"Arthur, are you sure about this? You're still so young."

I nodded firmly.

"Of course, you already know that I'm more than capable of taking care of myself. Besides, I promised I'd help her, and you've always said to never make promises I can't keep."

She studied me for a long moment before sighing.

"Alright, but only if you promise to come back home safely."

"I promise, Granny. And thanks a bunch. You're the best."

I said solemnly.

Granny gave me a small nod of approval before turning back to her cooking.

I glanced at the girl, who was already helping herself to another plate of waffles.

"I hope this trip doesn't end on a sour note."

I muttered under my breath.
