Why is it that so many people consider immortality a curse? Most stories and fiction depict immortality as a sad and cruel thing to acquire. But why is that? I would like to look at a specific hidden existence in particular.
There are many ways to become a god. A long time ago there was a man named Aesop. He collected stories that contained within them morals and lessons.
Some famous examples would be things like:
Tortoise and the hare... slow and steady wins the race.
The boy who cried wolf... liars won't be believed even if they are telling the truth.
What I want to talk about in particular is 'The Fox and the Grapes'.
It is about a fox that saw some grapes hanging from a branch. Their mouth watered as they tried to jump up and eat them. They repeatedly failed over and over again. Eventually, they call themselves a fool for this action.
They complain that the grapes are sour and aren't worth the effort.
But they never tasted the grapes... so how could they know?
The lesson is that there are existences which will trick themselves into despising goals that are unreachable. People will pretend that something they have never experienced and have no concept of... they will belittle it.
Perhaps they will even discourage others from trying to attain them. In Aesop's story. There were no other foxes for the fox to tell that the grapes were 'sour'. But this happens all the time in life. People do not like seeing others succeed where they have failed.
If I can't have the grapes. Why should you be able to?
Being eternal.
Everyone in your life will tell you it is impossible...
It is!
But... so what?
Doing the possible is boring!
Everybody can do what is within the limits of reality. But it takes someone doing something incomprehensible to pull off the impossible!
To be a hidden existence is to constantly defy the rules.
Being eternal isn't a curse! Neither is it a blessing!
Everything is based on your perspective.
Now tell me...
The grapes are eternity, and you are the fox.
Do you think they are sour? or sweet?
To imply that living forever is horrible would be to imply that you do not enjoy life. Whenever I wake up, I am filled with joy. It is good to be alive.
There are so many things to do. So many things to learn. So many ways to grow. So many paths and choices.
An old man at the end of his life may say 'I'm tired'. Maybe he is ready and has accepted death. But we are different. We do not allow ourselves to be 'tired'.
We will not peacefully go to death.
We will cheat it!
Maybe those 'grapes' aren't actually out of reach at all. It is our limited thinking and bias that makes them seem so.
That is why this techniques purpose is to cultivate an attitude and provide a tool you can use to beat reality.
