Chapter 12: In the Hospital
From unconsciousness, Nora slowly opened his eyes. The unfamiliar surroundings made him feel disoriented.
"Where am I?"
As he gradually became more alert, he carefully observed his surroundings and finally realized his current location.
"I'm not entirely sure which hospital this is, but I'm definitely in a hospital."
Since childhood, he had never been to a hospital before. The only time he had seen hospital architecture was through pictures.
Sensing his own body, he let out a long sigh.
"Haiz… I'm not too badly injured, but right now, I'm far too weak."
He recalled the entire battle—no, it would be more accurate to call it a spar—with Magnus. He was well aware of just how weak he was now.
Turning toward the window and gazing at the distant horizon, he muttered to himself:
"I couldn't even inflict a single real wound on the president, even when he allowed me to land a hit. If I want to save this world, I must attain power equal to his… or even surpass him."
The responsibility of saving the world was an immense burden. On top of that, he didn't even have the advantage of past memories, making things even more difficult.
If he had retained his memories, he could have planned ahead to counter the enemy's dangerous schemes while also preventing his allies from making costly mistakes.
He glanced around the room, searching for any items that might have been left for him. Finally, his eyes landed on the cabinet to his left.
There, he clearly saw a phone and a sealed letter placed together.
Even without thinking too hard, it was obvious that these were prepared specifically for him.
Reaching out with his left hand, he grabbed the phone before unfolding the letter to read it.
The letter read:
"If you're reading this letter, then you must have woken up. We are pleased to congratulate you on officially joining the ranks of heroes who protect humanity.
From now on, you are recognized as an F-rank hero. Your monthly stipend will be distributed at the same time as the others. We hope you will contribute greatly to humanity.
If you have regained consciousness, please call the number on the envelope. We will send someone to deliver your identification documents shortly."
As he read the letter, Nora smirked and thought to himself:
"This marks the first step, doesn't it? Moreover, I must have caught the president's attention by now. Meeting him at this stage is truly a stroke of luck."
With that in mind, he picked up the phone and powered it on. As expected, there was no password.
Weren't they afraid of it being stolen?
Of course not. Surveillance cameras were everywhere in the hospital. Who would be foolish enough to take such a risk just to steal a phone here?
He entered a string of numbers, and the dial tone echoed in the quiet room.
"Beep~ Beep~"
Before long, the call connected, and a stranger's voice came through:
"Hello, Nora. I'll be your support assistant for now… though I'm not your personal assistant. I handle a lot of people. My name's Elias—pleasure to meet you."
"Hello, I'm Nora. Nice to meet you too."
Nora responded politely.
On the other end of the line, a slightly gaunt man with messy black hair and brown eyes sat in his office. He lacked any combat strength, but his quick thinking made him a valuable assistant to many heroes.
Based on Nora's tone and attitude (assuming he wasn't putting on an act), Elias chuckled and said:
"Haha, good. I'll have someone deliver your identification documents soon. We'll meet when the opportunity arises."
"Alright. Thanks."
And just like that, the call ended rather abruptly. Understandable—Elias had a heavy workload, and answering Nora's call was just one of his many responsibilities.
After hanging up, Nora smiled to himself and assessed:
"Fast, but a bit too hasty."
.....
At that moment, Alice was at home, as there were no active missions. She lay sideways on the sofa, propping her chin with one hand as she watched TV.
Suddenly, a different sound caught her attention.
"Beep~ Beep~"
"Huh? Who's calling at this hour?"
It was the middle of the afternoon, her leisure time. Having someone disturb her now was a bit annoying.
Mornings and afternoons were her designated cultivation periods—unless she had a mission, it was technically part of her working hours.
Seeing the incoming call, she was momentarily puzzled before answering:
"Elias? What's the matter? I don't recall any missions lately."
On the other end, Elias's face darkened as he cursed internally:
"Unbelievable. So I remembered, but you didn't even bother?"
However, instead of voicing his frustration, he simply said:
"Did you forget that you asked me to notify you when Nora woke up? Well, he's awake. Goodbye."
With that, Elias hung up. His irritation was evident in his abrupt tone.
Alice, just snapping out of her dazed state, yelled into the phone:
"Hey, hey, hey! What kind of attitude is that? I know I messed up, but hanging up like that is just plain rude!"
But there was no one left to hear her complaints—Elias had already ended the call.
"Hmph, not going to argue with you. If Nora's awake, I'd better hurry over and check on him."
Muttering to herself, she quickly changed clothes and caught a bus to the hospital.
Why not just run there?
Simple—the president had ordered heroes to avoid flaunting their strength and to maintain anonymity during non-mission times.
He strongly disliked the idea of heroes turning into celebrities, entangling themselves in unnecessary distractions that delayed their duty to humanity.
As a result, despite their incredible speed, many heroes opted for cars or public transportation.
Fortunately, in Country X, public transport was highly efficient; otherwise, Alice would have been forced to get a driver's license.
.....
A short while later, she arrived in front of Nora's hospital room. Without hesitation, she knocked on the door—loud and unreserved.
Hearing that distinct, no-nonsense knocking, Nora immediately had a guess about who it was. Still, he asked:
"Who is it?"
"It's me. Can I come in?"
As if the question was just a formality, she didn't wait for a response before pushing the door open and walking inside.
Nora sighed, feeling a bit helpless—but not entirely displeased.
