chapter 6
6: A New Encounter
When the fresh green leaves emitted a thick scent, Anna went to the kindergarten, and a new child joined our nursery.
During the graduation ceremony, Anna almost cried but managed to deliver a dignified speech as the representative of the graduating class. I cried. I cried loudly while Anna was speaking. Towards the end, Anna cried too. Everyone was crying together. It was the first time in a million lifetimes that everyone cried at a ceremony like this.
Let’s admit it.
At that moment, I was able to forget the existence of “enemies.”
What are the “enemies”?
Their true nature is unknown. After all, they suppress their presence without leaving a trace.
But the “enemies” definitely exist. In our lives so far, things have been too peaceful. They have dulled our fangs within the peace, and even taken away our will to fight. Surely, the “enemies” are waiting for a chance even now.
Because there hasn’t been a single instance in my million lifetimes where I haven’t been unfortunate or had what I gained taken away.
This current life is too peaceful and idyllic. It’s tempting to believe, “Is it really peaceful?” But that’s not the case. A life that has been peaceful a million times suddenly being peaceful just once is statistically impossible.
That’s why I was on guard against the new friends at the nursery.
I managed to hold onto myself without being brainwashed, but there’s a possibility that someone who has been completely brainwashed by their parents or adults will come in and disrupt our peace from within our group of friends.
By the way, in our nursery, it is customary for the children who will graduate that year (three to four years old) to take care of the children under one year old.
So, the two-year-olds are relatively free to play with their peers.
Now that I have turned two and my language and walking have improved, I need to find someone in my group whom I can trust. I have my eye on Mark. He will surely become someone important in the future.
However, as if to thwart my intentions, a nursery teacher approached me with a request.
“Rex, could you take care of Mirim-chan?”
Uh! (Understood)
…Ha! I’m being brainwashed!
The nursery teachers usually try to get you to fully agree with their words. I felt ashamed of myself. I need to be cautious, but at the same time, this is it. This world is indeed formidable.
But it wouldn’t look good if I suddenly said, “I’ve changed my mind.”
The children in the nursery are obedient to the nursery teachers. If I were the only one to show a rebellious attitude, I wouldn’t know what kind of obstacles I would face in the future.
Alright. I decided to play the role of a foolish two-year-old.
“Thank you. There are many new friends this year… Rex, since you’re dependable, could you take care of the one-year-old children with the older kids? Oh, but just keep an eye on them, okay?”
I nodded. Alright, I will show you that I can live up to your expectations. I am your obedient servant for now—only now.
I wanted to say that sarcastically and give a smug smile, but I am only two years old, so I can only string together a couple of words. So, I settled for smiling happily to express my agreement. I was happy to have my head patted.
And so, the child I was assigned to take care of was Mirim, and she turned out to be a beastkin.
In this world, various races coexist. In the past, each race used to have their own separate territories, but recently, globalization has progressed, and every race is distributed in every region.
However, the “beast people” are a species that lives in a distant place across the sea, and even in a world that is becoming more globalized, it is rare to see them around here.
I stared intently into the eyes of that creature, which still seemed unsteady on its feet.
Its black eyes stared back at me, its ears covered in black fur twitched, and its tail behind its waist swayed from side to side.
At this point, I couldn’t contain my academic curiosity and grabbed its tail, but even when its tail was grabbed, it just looked bewildered.
I have no idea what it’s thinking.
Even though its tail was grabbed, it still wouldn’t show its tail.
I reached my hand under its arm and stared at it up close.
Curious, I rubbed its cheek with my lips and tasted it. It was… smooth and creamy.
“Milim-chan, you’re quiet, aren’t you? Take good care of her. If you have any questions, call the teacher right away, okay?”
I nodded vigorously.
And that’s how I ended up with Milim as my junior.
