Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Nightmare Magic
Apparition consists of three main components: "Disapparate," "Apparate," and "Follower Apparition." However, most people refer to all three collectively as Apparition.
"Disapparate" means to vanish from one location, while "Apparate" means to appear in another. Together, these two steps form a complete Apparition.
"Follower Apparition" is when a wizard who has mastered Apparition takes others along during the process. For example, when Toby transported Robert from Hogsmeade Village to the Wizard Tower, it was an example of "Follower Apparition."
Generally, once a wizard learns Apparition, bringing others along becomes relatively easy."Most importantly, remember the three Ds: Destination, Determination, and Deliberation…"
"First, Master Wade, you must focus and visualize your destination. The clearer, the better."
"Next, let the desire to reach that place consume every part of your being!"
"Finally, turn on the spot and clear your mind. Move with confidence—hesitation leads to failure."Toby wasn't exaggerating—his understanding of Apparition was exceptional. In just a few sentences, he had covered the essential points.
Now, five meters ahead of Robert, where a human-shaped training dummy once stood, there was a one-meter-wide circular target on the floor. His task was to Apparate into the circle.
Holding an old wand, Robert stared at the marked area, then closed his eyes.
Thanks to his strong memory, the image of the circle was vivid in his mind.
Following his training in Occlumency, he focused his intent on reaching that spot.
Finally, he entrusted himself entirely to the magic, turned sharply on the spot, and—"Go!"Bang!
When Robert opened his eyes, he was already standing inside the circle."Ah! Master Wade is a genius! He succeeded on his first try!" Toby exclaimed excitedly.Robert was stunned. He had braced himself for failure, even prepared for the possibility of Splinching.
But he had succeeded on the first attempt?"Toby, check if anything was left behind."Toby beamed. "Master Wade, you're completely intact! Not even a hair was left behind! It doesn't look like this was your first time Apparating at all!""Merlin's beard! When I helped Master Sophic learn Apparition, he practiced for over a week, Splinched himself five times, and still hadn't mastered it…"Toby suddenly froze, realizing what he had just said. He immediately clenched his fists and smacked his head."Oh! Stupid Toby! Bad elf! Speaking ill of my former master—"Robert grabbed Toby's arm and spoke firmly. "Toby, I am your master now. If you must punish yourself, it should be for me—not for anyone else. Understood?"
Toby's ears drooped. "Y-yes, Master Wade!"
When a house-elf bonds with a new master, all ties to their previous owner are severed. That's why elves rarely change masters—most cannot bear to part with their former bonds.
Toby's change of allegiance was an accident caused by the system, but now that he had a new master, he had to follow the rules. He was Robert's elf now."This won't happen again, Master Wade! Let's practice Apparition again!"To prevent Toby from punishing himself further, Robert gave another command."Good. This time, let's try going farther."Perhaps because of his Occlumency training, Robert had developed a deep understanding of magic. He also possessed the magical reserves of an adult wizard, making his Apparition training remarkably smooth.
Before long, he was moving freely between the floors of the Wizard Tower.
Growing bolder, he wrapped a cloth around his face for disguise and Apparated alone to Hogsmeade Village and Diagon Alley—all without failure.
Toby, who had been observing him closely, was completely astonished.
By the time Robert returned to the Wizard Tower from London, Apparition had become second nature to him.
Robert was thrilled to discover that his previous study of Occlumency significantly helped with mastering other forms of magic."One principle applies to all…"The effort he had put in day and night was finally paying off."Master Wade, congratulations on mastering Apparition!" Toby cheered. "However, wizards must pass the Department of Magical Transportation's exam before they can use Apparition legally…"
"I understand." Robert waved it off.Just like driving required a license, Apparition required official certification. Only those who passed the test and registered with the Ministry of Magic could legally Apparate.
However, Robert had no intention of taking the exam anytime soon.
Apparition was now his hidden trump card.
After all, very few wizards could Apparate at his age. If an eleven-year-old showed up for the test, it would cause a massive sensation.
If people knew he could Apparate, it would no longer be a secret weapon.A revealed ace is no longer an ace.Since Apparition training hadn't been physically exhausting, Robert decided to move on to his next plan after a short rest.
When he first arrived at the Wizard Tower, he had selected several Dark Magic spells to study.
Among them, the one that intrigued him most was a spell called Nightmare Magic.
This spell was found in an old manuscript collected by a member of the Sommerno family on the fourth floor of the tower. Its inventor was unknown.
Nightmare Magic allowed the caster to instantly put an enemy into a deep sleep and manipulate their dreams at will.
Robert saw immense potential in this spell. For interrogation, it could be even more effective than Truth Serum or Legilimency.
For torture, it could be worse than the Cruciatus Curse. If one could control dreams, they could force their target to relive their worst fears endlessly…
Few could endure such torment.
With enough mastery, it was even possible to infiltrate a sleeping person's dreams, manipulate their subconscious, and steal their secrets without them realizing it.
Of course, such a powerful spell came with extreme difficulty.
Many members of the Sommerno family had studied the manuscript, but only a few had successfully mastered Nightmare Magic. It required immense soul strength.Luckily, Robert had long suspected that his soul was far stronger than that of an average wizard.
That meant he had a real chance of learning this forbidden magic.
Additionally, Nightmare Magic was extremely subtle. It could be disguised as a simple Stunning Spell, making it even more effective for stealth and deception.
At this stage, Robert needed a secret and powerful trump card.
And Nightmare Magic might be exactly what he was looking for.
