Chapter 418: Chapter 418: Gul'dan
Although Llane had already seen the fleeing sorcerers in the distance, hearing this news directly from Alaric made him breathe a sigh of relief.
The presence of enemy spellcasters was a significant obstacle to their battle plan, as no one knew what kind of magic these sorcerers might unleash and how much destruction it could cause.
Spellcasters were always an unstable factor on the battlefield.
Now that this unstable element had been removed, he felt a sense of calm.
The remaining task was simply to wait for the right moment.
On the battlefield, after losing the support of the enemy spellcasters, the orc soldiers found themselves in dire straits.
With no threat from enemy spellcasters, the mages from Dalaran began to unleash their magic artillery, bombarding the orc soldiers below the city walls with a relentless onslaught.
Meanwhile, Alaric chose to retreat into the shadows once more, playing a passive role.
Blizzards, firestorms, chain lightning, fire walls, fissures in the earth, frost novas—various dazzling spells rained down on the orcs and ogres.
Some were frozen into ice sculptures, others burned to ashes, some turned to charred remains, and some were devoured by the earth…
Though their deaths varied, in the face of elemental magic, these strong warriors were nothing more than fragile flesh.
In an instant, chaos erupted.
Despite their bloodthirsty and warlike nature, the orcs were not complete fools; they were willing to engage in fierce battles with their flesh and blood counterparts, but they absolutely did not wish to die beneath waves of massive magical AOE attacks.
The former meant glory, while the latter was utterly meaningless.
The orc offensive came to a temporary halt.
Seeing this situation, Gul'dan, the chieftain of the Twilight Hammer, began to curse loudly with both of his heads.
"What a bunch of useless trash! (They should have died long ago.)
They've actually been defeated by a few little mages. (Such people don't deserve to wield the power bestowed by the master.)
You go and seek assistance from Kilrogg, (find that one-eyed dragon,) I'll personally deal with those mages. (It's time for me to take action.)"
Soon, Gul'dan's enormous figure appeared beside the battlefield.
As the first ogre mage in history, Gul'dan's power was far beyond that of the other sorcerers.
His appearance immediately caught Alaric's attention.
In fact, Alaric refrained from intervening precisely to guard against him.
Gul'dan raised both hands toward the city walls, gathering shadow energy between his palms. In no time, a massive sphere of shadow energy formed.
In the next moment, the energy sphere launched several shadow arrows toward the city walls, these terrifying energy arrows shot towards the mages with astonishing speed.
With the shadow energy contained in the arrows, most of the mages present would be unable to withstand them, even with their magic shields prepared in advance.
However, Alaric intervened just in time.
He raised one hand toward the incoming shadow arrows and began to chant.
If someone were to listen closely at that moment, they would notice that his spellcasting speed was frighteningly fast, nearly ten times the normal pace.
This was due to time magic; while Gul'dan was casting, Alaric had cast a time distortion spell on himself, accelerating his own time in order to enhance his reaction and casting speed.
Then, a wall of light appeared in the air, positioned in front of the mages.
All the shadow arrows shot by Gul'dan struck the light wall.
Though the explosive shadow energy caused ripples to ripple across the light wall, the wall clearly had more power left, and the shadow arrows ultimately failed to budge it.
Seeing this scene, both of Gul'dan's heads furrowed in concern.
He had originally thought he would be facing nothing but weaklings, but now he suddenly realized he had encountered a worthy opponent.
With the first move failing, Gul'dan immediately unleashed his second attack.
A dark shadow beam shot from the enormous single eye of his one-eyed head toward Alaric.
The purple-black ray, imbued with the will of death, struck the wall of light, but this time, the wall's defense was not as effective.
The concentrated shadow energy pierced through the wall in mere seconds, causing it to shatter into shimmering light particles that dissipated into the air.
However, Alaric quickly formulated a countermeasure.
The best way to deal with shadows was actually with holy light, but Alaric did not possess that power—however, alternatives existed.
Without much thought, Alaric quickly located a suitable spell from his vast magical memory.
He pointed with his right hand, channeling arcane energy to coalesce at his fingertips, transforming into a brilliant light.
This was not the divine holy light, but ordinary sunlight.
The radiant light formed a beam that collided with the shadow ray, both energies clashing against each other in a fierce struggle.
Fortunately, this wasn't a magical duel like those in the Harry Potter world; otherwise, it would have devolved into a battle of mana consumption!
Seeing their leader entangled with the opponent, the other mages felt this was a great opportunity to sneak attack Gul'dan.
One male mage stepped forward, attempting to seize Gul'dan's spell and counter it.
"Don't do that!"
As soon as Alaric noticed his actions, he instinctively shouted to stop him.
Unfortunately, his warning came a moment too late.
The mage, who had been attempting to counter Gul'dan's spell, suddenly became fervent, abandoning his defense and began conjuring fireballs to hurl at the surrounding mages.
One unfortunate mage, caught completely off guard, was struck head-on and suffered severe injuries.
"He's been mind-controlled!" Alaric warned. "Quick, find a way to dispel that ogre's control!"
These mages were still too inexperienced.
Gul'dan appeared to be evenly matched with Alaric, but unlike ordinary mages, ogres had two heads, allowing a dual-headed ogre mage to potentially cast two spells simultaneously.
Of course, due to their natural intelligence, most dual-headed ogres couldn't fully utilize this advantage, but Gul'dan was an exception.
With two heads, how could he be easily ambushed?
Thus, the mage attempting to counter Gul'dan not only failed to disrupt his spell but instead fell prey to Gul'dan's treachery, his will twisted into a fervent worship of Gul'dan.
Alaric wanted to intervene personally, but Gul'dan immediately intensified his attacks, forcing Alaric to focus all his energy on countering Gul'dan.
Though Alaric believed he was far stronger in magical control than a demigod-like caster such as Gul'dan, the latter had powerful backing.
With ancient gods standing behind him, Gul'dan possessed significantly more mana than Alaric. Faced with his ferocious shadow magic, Alaric had no choice but to defend with all his might.
