Chapter 14: Connections Across Two Worlds
On September 1st, Harry took a moment to think about his friends who were supposed to return to Hogwarts that day. On September 4th, Hermione got mail during the morning "mail bomb". An owl delivered a letter from her parents, with another letter enclosed. The other letter was from "Evan". "'Mione. Who's the letter from?" Ron asked. "One is from my mom and dad. The other one is from a boy named Evan." She replied. Ginny's head popped up, looking at Hermione. "Evan? Who's that?" she enquired. "A boy I met while I was home these last few days. Well, not really a boy. He just turned 18." Hermione responded. "A bloke you just met? Why is he writing you?" Ron asked, getting red in the ears. "After the .... I went to the park, sitting on a swing crying. Evan walked up and asked me if I was OK. We got to talking, for hours it seemed." Hermione said.
Ron's face became redder the more Hermione described her meeting with "Evan Fenix". They had sat and talked for a few hours – she about just losing a close friend, he about losing his parents in a freak attack when he was just a boy. She further explained that Evan had grown up on the streets of London. Hermione went on to tell them how Evan had reminded her of Harry, being an orphan. Evan had been severely bullied while at the orphanage and ran away to live on the streets. It was a hard life for him, sometimes having to steal food and clothes to survive; how Evan occasionally managed to get some jobs mowing lawns or light labor to earn some money for food; how he found shelter in churches, homeless shelters, and sometimes cardboard boxes. "Weren't you afraid talking to this random homeless guy, who pops up out of nowhere?" Ron and Ginny asked.
"He's not like what you would expect of a homeless person" Hermione explained. "He doesn't speak gutter talk, he spoke intelligently. When I had asked him about that, Evan explained that he had befriended other kids his age, and would read up on materials in the library comparable to what was being taught in class. He found that he was respected more when he didn't talk gutter talk. Evan couldn't afford to go to school because that would put him back in the system and they would demand he go back to the orphanage, something he adamantly wanted to avoid." She continued to explain. Now Evan was planning to go into military service, where he could become more "respectable", earn honest money, and the military would help him pass his Key Stage Three and Four tests and his A-levels.
Ron and Ginny's blank gaze was evidence enough that they had no clue what she was talking about. But they were curious what this Evan guy looked like, and how Hermione would write back to him as he was homeless. Hermione explained that she and Evan opened up a rental mail box for two months until he entered the military, and then she would write to the base.
Hermione knew from her "Introduction to the Wizarding World for Muggle-Borns" that a muggle could write to someone at Hogwarts, but the specifics would be provided by one of the Professors at the school. So, in order to keep up the illusion of communicating with a muggle, she went to Professor McGonagall. "Professor, I met a non-magical young man a week or two ago, and we want to correspond. How would I go about doing that?" she asked.
The Professor responded that she would have to set up a Postal Box in nearby Dufftown in Moray, (located in the Scottish Highlands) at the mixed post office there. Hermione could send the correspondence by owl to the post office. The Post Master would put the correspondence in the muggle post. Any mail she received (addressed to Hogwarts School for the Gifted, at the Post Office address, would be owled to her. (The Post Master later disclosed to her that, for an extra one gallon per month, mail can be delivered via house elf for added security.)
September 19 – Hermione, Ron, Ginny and Neville were sitting at the Gryffindor table eating breakfast when the morning "mail bomb" began. On this day, a Long-Eared Owl floated down to deliver a letter to Hermione. The letter contained a secondary letter and a note from Eyelops Owl Emporium. In the note it stated that this owl had been ordered by Harry Potter. The enclosed letter was to also be delivered at that time. Hermione wasn't aware of the tears tracking down her cheeks. Harry's letter was dated June 30, 1995. "Dear Hermione" the letter began. "I know how difficult it is to remain in touch with your parents during the school year, and I don't know if I will get another chance to get you a gift during the summer." – it was almost like a premonition. "I know I've never been one to express my emotions well, but I wanted to tell you how much your friendship has meant to me all these years. Happy Birthday. Harry." She didn't know how he could have kept his gift a secret while he was at Grimmauld Place. Hermione decided to call her owl Gryffin because he reminded her of Harry."
"Evan stood outside a movie theater looking up at the banner of the movie he just watched. It felt so ironic. He just finished watching a rerun of the second movie in the Star Wars series. He felt it was ironic because of the scene where Yoda teaches Luke to use the force to lift a rock. It all came down to intent and focus. Ironic! Later that night he thought about "the force", Yoda's instructions and was diligent in employing them while practicing his wandless magic. He had been making progress. When he started, he started with lumos, generating light in the palm of his hand. Then he tried to lift a feather; move the feather around; lift a pebble, then manipulate it around the room, and so forth. Evan gradually worked his way through his first and second year spells. The more he practiced, the faster he progressed. He had also finally got the Fidelius to work wandlessly for him. Dobby once again played secret keeper as he hid the secret "Evan Jacob Fenix is Harry Potter".
