Happry Potter: The New Player

Chapter 34: The Price of Protection

Evan saw Harry fall in the mud. The rain fell on Harry's face, his arm hanging at a strange angle. Evan hurried towards the center of the field. He didn't want to see Lockhart using a bone-disintegrating spell.

By the time he crossed the crowd, Lockhart was already in front of Harry.

—"Don't worry, leave everything to me, children!" He said in a reassuring tone, "It's just a simple spell that I've used countless times."

As he spoke, he rolled up his emerald green shirt sleeves.

—"No, no!" Harry weakly said.

But it was too late, Lockhart was casting the spell. A second later, he aimed his wand at Harry's arm.

It was too late to stop him, so Evan had to cast a spell to save Harry.

—"Protego!" Evan shouted.

The next second, a red light shot from the tip of his wand, and the blue light spell hit Harry.

Perhaps this time his training was adequate, or maybe Lockhart was terrible at casting spells. In short, everyone watched as Lockhart's spell backfired.

The blue light beam flew through the air and hit Percy, who was next to Lockhart.

Percy fainted, and the people around him held their breath.

They saw Percy's left arm, struck by the spell, was limp and boneless.

—"Oh my, have his bones vanished?"

—"Lockhart looked equally terrified. Yes, it sometimes happens, must be some reaction to the Protego spell that Evan cast and my spell. But don't worry, some classmate can take him to Madam Pomfrey, she can help him."

Fred and George glared at Lockhart before taking Percy to the school infirmary, Ginny was pale, tears in her eyes.

In the school infirmary, it took Madam Pomfrey just a second to heal Harry's bones, but upon seeing Percy's arm, she expressed her discontent.

—"What have you done? Poor boy, all his bones are gone, and I need to regrow them."

—"I'm sorry, Percy, I didn't think this would happen."

—"It was an accident, Evan!" Percy said, shaking his head.

Evan, Harry, Hermione, and the Weasley family gathered around Percy's bed, and despite Gryffindor winning the Quidditch match, no one was happy.

"It's all Lockhart's fault," Fred said.

"It's not his fault, it was Evan's Protego spell and Lockhart's spell that had a terrible effect," Hermione defended Lockhart.

"Everyone knows Protego only reflects the spell," George said.

"But..."

—"Why do you keep defending Lockhart, Hermione?"

"If Harry or Percy wanted to get rid of their bones, they would find a better way," Ron said loudly.

"We all make mistakes," Hermione blushed, "Lockhart was just trying to help."

"He wasn't helping, if it wasn't for Evan, Harry would be lying in this bed now."

—"Silence, children!" Madam Pomfrey said as she brought out a giant bottle of Skele-Gro, "You should let him rest, regrowing bones is a painful process."

Madam Pomfrey said as she poured a cup for Percy and handed it to him.

Everyone watched Percy's pained face as he drank the potion, Ginny hurried to help him swallow it.

When Percy felt better, Madam Pomfrey ushered them out, the Weasleys had insisted on staying longer with Percy.

But Madam Pomfrey disagreed with so many people staying with him. Eventually, Evan, Harry, and Hermione returned to the common room.

Harry patted Evan on the shoulder and said, "It's not your fault. Percy just had bad luck."

"Harry, Professor Lockhart only wanted to help you, the issue was the rogue Bludger, someone should have charmed it!" Hermione said.

"But, who is ...?"

"I believe I know."

Evan led them to an empty classroom and explained, "It's the house-elf Dobby, he enchanted the ball."

Evan recounted what he saw, and then Dobby suddenly appeared before them.

In the dim classroom, the three stood gazing into Dobby's tennis ball-sized eyes.

"What are you doing here?" Harry said, slightly surprised.

"Harry Potter has returned to school," Dobby whispered sadly, "I repeatedly warned Harry Potter. When Harry Potter missed the train, why didn't you go home?"

"Wait, how do you know I missed the train?" Harry asked suddenly.

Dobby's lips trembled and he appeared suspicious.

"Did you do it?" Harry said slowly, "Sealed the wall and wouldn't let us through?"

"Exactly, sir," Dobby nodded, "I waited inside and when I saw Harry, I sealed the entrance, then I punished myself!"

He displayed his ten long fingers with bandages to the three individuals.

"Why do you have to punish yourself?" Hermione asked, sounding surprised.

"Because Dobby must punish himself, Dobby thought Harry Potter was safe. Dobby never dreamed that Harry Potter and his friends would find a way to get to school!"

Dobby rocked back and forth and continued to hit his head, making Evan wonder about Dobby's intelligence quotient.

"Hearing that Harry Potter was back at Hogwarts made Dobby burn the master's dinner! The master gave me a fiercer whipping than ever before, sir..."

"We nearly got expelled, Evan, Ron, and I!" Harry growled, "You'd better leave before I strangle you."

"Dobby doesn't care!" Dobby said with a slight smile, "Dobby has grown accustomed to the threat of death, more than five times a day at home."

"Wait, who is threatening you?" Hermione asked, furrowing her brow.

"Dobby cannot reveal the master's name. Dobby cannot divulge the master's family secrets."

Dobby blew his nose in a corner of his dirty smock, looking miserable.

"Why do you wear that, Dobby?" Harry asked curiously, no longer as angry as before.

"This symbolizes the slave status of a house-elf," Dobby said.

"Slave?" Hermione said, frowning even more.

"Yes, Dobby is only free when his master gives him clothes to wear. The people at home are cautious; they don't even give Dobby a pair of socks because if Dobby is free, he would be free to leave the house forever."
