Chapter 637: Laundry Shop

Incus Neighborhood, Corvid Quarter.

Nestled in the banks of the Dundee Harbor, this neighborhood was constantly active with merchant business and round-the-clock shipping. In many ways, this neighborhood could be considered the heart of the Corvid Quarter.

Amongst several bustling stores in this neighborhood, there was a laundry shop that unexpected customers frequented. Of course, the laundry shop was just a front.

The real reason why some of the rich residents of this district—yes, even a place such as Corvid Quarter would have a few deep-pocketed folks—visited this place was because the shop was actually a pleasure house. Needless to say, it was controlled by the Red Fists.

Now one might ask, what set this place apart from all the other whorehouses in the district? One might also ask, why would the pleasure house pose as a laundry shop?

The answers to these questions could be found past the wet clothes hanging from the ropes and the garments being dried by laborers inside the laundry shop known as the Crow Suds.

A brown-haired boy with light freckles on his face worked tirelessly as he hung the clothes on a rope in the open area behind the shop. It was a silent winter morning and there was barely any sunlight. Yet, he had to diligently perform his duties to earn his wages.

Fortunately, he had found another source of income in the past year, one that paid him more. That source of income, that job was something he prided himself in.

It gave him a sense of purpose. It made him feel that he was doing something honorable. He also got to eat free food which was a big boon for a boy like him.

The boy's ears suddenly perked up when he heard the sound of a horse-drawn carriage approaching the building through the back alley. The sound of horses galloping on the cobblestones echoed in the snow, drifting into his ears.

A group of three men alighted from the carriage and started walking toward the back entrance of the Crow Suds. All three of them dressed ostentatiously, making one doubt if this was truly the poorest district of Ravenfell.

The boy hurriedly stopped what he was doing and respectfully bowed as they walked past him. Naturally, they didn't pay attention to the boy and spoke in a joyful and lecherous manner as they entered through the backdoor.

"Today you can finally get a taste of what it feels like to pound a noblewoman!"

"An aristocratic whore in Corvid? Hmph, I'll believe it when I see it."

"Of course, these pitiful things don't come from the families in Ravenfell. I've heard rumors that they hail from the surrounding kingdoms, you know, the families that lost in the battles for land and whatnot."

"And what makes you believe that they've really come from noble families of those kingdoms? For all you know, they could be lying!"

"Trust me, my friend. Once you get a taste, you'll know…"

Their voices slowly drifted further away as the guards standing at the back entrance shut the door.

The boy peeked through the clothes hanging on the wires, gazing at the burly bodyguards vigilantly, and thought, I wonder what goes on in there.

His work required him to travel everywhere in the two-story building except for the rear side and the basement. Luckily, his 'second work' didn't require him to infiltrate the inaccessible parts of the building.

"Oi, Billy, where do you think you're looking, boy?" Shouted one of the guards in a threatening manner. "Want me to gouge your eyeballs out?"

The boy panicked and hurriedly looked away. "S-Sorry, boss!" He then began resuming his work. There were still a lot more clothes to dry. After that, he even had to shovel the snow to keep the back alley clear.

He had to do all the work by himself since he was the only one working today. But this worked out in his favor because it meant he could stay out there for longer and eavesdrop on any conversation around him.

The sun slowly dipped below the horizon as more and more people entered the building through the back entrance. It was evident that none of them had come to avail laundry services.

As Billy was shoveling the snow off the ground, the backdoor suddenly opened and two fair-skinned, beautiful women wearing warm clothes stepped out.

"What is it?" Asked one of the guards as he saw the women coming out.

"Must I ask for permission even when I want to smoke?" One of the women snapped. Without waiting for a reply, she walked to the burn barrel on the side with her companion and lit the tobacco inside her pipe.

The guards watched the two escorts with narrowed eyes, but they didn't argue further. Meanwhile, when the freckled boy saw the two women standing by the burn barrel, his eyes lit up.

He slowly made his way toward them while continuing to shovel the snow on the way. He made sure to not draw too much attention. As he got closer to them, he was able to hear the muffled conversation between the two women.

"… Arya and Tina left early in the morning today…"

"Do you know where?"

"… I overheard someone mentioning a noble in the city… Something about becoming a personal maid…"

"Do you really think we'll be granted freedom after working for the nobles for a few years?"

"…I don't know. I don't have a good feeling about this. Every week a couple of girls leave this place… What if something happened to them? What if they…"

"Brienne, you must think positively! We just have to work for the nobles for a few years and then we can go back to our homes! Working as a maid is far better than working as a whore, don't you think so?"

"I fear something's truly happened to them…"

"Why? What makes you say that?"

"They all said they'd write letters to us once they left this place, did they not? How many of them have written to us since they—"

The woman named Brienne suddenly stopped talking when she noticed the freckled boy standing too close to them. "Hey, get lost!"

"Ah!" Billy flinched in alarm. Once again, he bowed apologetically toward the women. "I-I'm sorry! I didn't realize you two were standing there."

The women ignored him. They finished smoking in silence before entering the bulding through the backdoor. The freckled boy gazed at their departing backs, thinking to himself, They sure smell nice…
