Godly Grey Sky

Chapter 4: Awakening

Aether wakes up in a large, elegant bedroom. It had a huge, red carpet and red blinds, and a couple of tables on the sides of the room with some vases and a standing mirror. With an intricate pattern on the ceiling.

The bed was large and immensely comfortable, almost as if it was enchanted. The room also had a sweet smell to it, probably from the flowers hanging off the windows.

He readjusted his oxygen synthesizer, as he did though, he noticed the air inside the room was very clean, a far cry from the outside world.

He looked at his shirt and noticed that his clothes had changed too. He was wearing a strange type of nightgown, with a weird looking pattern on it, one he had never seen before.

As he checked his clothes, he also checked his wounds. Which surprisingly, seemed to be completely gone.

"Wow, no scaring either, their healer must be incredibly talented, whoever these people are" He wondered, as he checked for wounds once again.

Aether then got up and looked at himself in the mirror.

He had expected to see a small, malnourished, and weak, sixteen year old boy.

Instead he saw a boy that was relatively fit with his hair layed down straight, all things considered, he looked good. His skin even had some color, it looked like he had gotten taller, and finally he finally got some meat on his bones.

"Their healer was incredible". He said checking himself out a little, before sitting back on the bed.

Sitting on the bed, he was still on edge from before he passed out. One could never be too wary or certain when it comes to their life, especially when they wake up in a bedroom they don't know.

As he was regaining his thoughts about what had happened, as he heard a robotic voice in his head.

*Please name your System*

Aether sat there confused.

Then he remembered. The goal he had been working towards, the one he had spent his life trying to accomplish, he had done it.

He had completed his Task.

A big grin spread across his face, he felt like screaming, in fact he would have, if he knew where he was.

Then the voice said again.

*Please name your System*

Oh right, he had forgotten about this part.

When people complete their Task and get their System, they get to name it.

Normally, people name it something cool, or a name of a passed loved one, or a pet they held dear. Or they name it something dumb, or try to be funny, then ending up regretting it later.

Naturally though, Aether had a long time to think about it, being it took sixteen years. So he had already come to a decision.

At first he'd thought he'd name it after his lost best friend, Suze. But Aether still had hope that she was alive, even if that chance was slim, so he didn't dare name it that.

So, instead of trying to put meaning into something irrelevant, he decided to go with the meaningless opinion.

"Atlas" Aether said out loud.

Just then, the voice once again sounded in his mind.

*Confirming*

*Atlas, yes?*

"Yes" Aether said.

*Congratulations, Aether Torn, on completing your Task*

*Please call on me for any assistance, when or if you might need it*

Aether was a little dumbfounded at the System's remark.

"Call on it?, no one ever mentioned this" He thought, wondering if this was normal anymore.

*Would you like to open your Status* Atlas said, in a robotic voice.

"Yes Atlas I would" He said in anticipation.

Aether looked at the first words of his Status.

————————-

System: Atlas

Name: Aether Torn

Position: Outcast

Ethereal: [0/20]

Abilities: [Spark] [Windbound] [Six Sense]

Tools: [Small Knife] [ID Card]

Rules:

————————-

There, of course, was a lot to take in.

The first thing he wanted to look at though, was what his Task had been, and what his new Task was.

"Atlas, could I see my previous Task?" He asked, waiting a little impatiently.

*Why of course, dear Aether" She responded, with a little emotion.

Just then this Status changed, updated with new characters.

————————-

Tasks:

Rank X: Defy The Gods

Rank XI: Kill Ten Thousand Grey Creatures

————————-

"Defy The Gods" He thought, confused and a little worried.

"How did I do that?" He wondered, not coming up with anything.

Then he looked over at his next Task, grimacing.

"Really, after everything I went through, you gave me another impossible ass Task. He thought, a little mad at the Gods.

"A thousand Greys, I mean come on, that'd take me more then three years, well, that's only if I kill one a day" He thought, not having much hope.

But as he thought about it a little, his situation had significantly improved.

"At least I know what my Task is now, and I hadn't even looked at my abilities" He thought, looking on the bright side, as he always tried to do.

"System, Status please" He said, still not used to talking to himself.

*Why of course, dear Aether"

Then his Status changed back.

————————-

Position: Outcast

————————-

His Position name was, well, rather weird. Normally it would be an occupation, like Fighter, or Farmer, but his was Outcast? What was that supposed to mean?

Aether pondered on it wondering if it had anything to do with his Task, or personality.

Then he noticed something strange.

————————-

Ethereal: [0/20]

————————-

"Ethereal?, what was that, isn't it supposed to be called Divinity?" He thought, very confused.

Normally, to use your Abilities, you used up some Divinity as a sort of power source. It was the most basic thing any Position had.

Yet Aether didn't have it, instead he had Ethereal.

"Why has my Status been so strange?, and what is Ethereal?, I assume it acts the same, so what's special about it?". He thought, staring at his status before moving on to his abilities.

————————-

Abilities: [Spark] [Windbound] [Six Sense]

————————-

In this aspect, nothing looked odd or out of place, in fact, he had gotten lucky, he had gotten three Abilities.

"Three Abilities" He thought, wide eyed.

"Most people only get one or two, but I got three" He thought, a little giddy.

Of course this was very rare, well, maybe not if you consider what Aether had to do, whatever that was.

"Defying the Gods must have been a large Task, I'm not really sure what I did though". He thought before reading the descriptions of his Abilities.

[Six Sense] You can sense things others can't.

[Windbound] The wind notices you.

[Spark] A small piece of Ethereal.

"Well, at least I know where the Ethereal came from, from the looks of it [Windbound] is an active type, while [Spark] and [Six Sense] are passive". He thought as he pondered over his abilities.

There were only two distinct differences between passive and active abilities. That is, that they don't take Divinity and that you can't turn them off without an item.

In the lower level Ranks you don't have a good amount of Divinity, or Ethereal in Aether's case, so more passive than active to quite good.

"I wonder what they do" He thought, then read the descriptions again

[Six Sense] You sense things others can't.

"Well it sounds cool at least" He thought, wondering what his new sense would do.

"Would it help me in combat, oh no, please don't be a sense about how people felt, those are more of a flaw than an Ability. He thought, half begging and half in fear.

[Windbound] The wind notices you.

"Wind huh, well an element is good, maybe I can control wind?". He thought as he tried to move the air, but nothing.

"Well it does stay, it only notices me" He theorized, as he thought about his abilities more, until looking at the last few characters.

————————-

Tools: [Small Knife] [ID Card]

Rules:

————————-

"Nothing much to say really, except that I don't have any Rules" He thought, feeling even luckier that he didn't get any.

Tools are just your important items you have on you. You can store them in a type of spatial storage that every Position has, repairing them and restoring them to their best condition.

He had finished reading his abilities, now he had to find out where he was, and where'd that black haired girl had gone. He still needs to thank her for saving his life.

Just then, he looked at the door, as if something was about to happen.

He was confused of course, not realizing why he was looking at the door, now of all times

Just as he thought that, the door swung open.
