Getting A System In A Modern World

Chapter 336: Winter’s Fall (II)

In one of the dimly lit holding rooms of Silas’s underground facility, a group of captured Frost family soldiers huddled together.

The sterile white walls seemed to close in on them, amplifying the oppressive silence. Their faces betrayed a mix of emotions—fear, confusion, and despair.

The air was thick with tension, and every sound, every faint sound of breathing, made them flinch.

"What does he plan to do with us?" one of them whispered, his voice trembling. His eyes darted toward the reinforced metal door as if expecting Silas himself to walk in at any moment.

Another prisoner, slumped against the wall, replied with a resigned tone, "He warned us. He told us what would happen if we stood against him. You don’t need to guess our fate—it’s already sealed."

The first prisoner shivered, the memory of Silas’s power still fresh in his mind. "How can someone like him exist? He’s not human. Splitting the earth, swallowing people whole… it’s like fighting a god."

"Yeah," the second prisoner muttered, his gaze distant. "But our current situation isn’t much better than theirs. Maybe being swallowed by the ground was quicker. This… this feels worse."

"Enough!" a sharp voice cut through the room, carrying an air of authority. The man who spoke glared at the two prisoners, his patience clearly wearing thin. "Stop whining. None of this changes anything. Focus on surviving, not complaining."

The first prisoner sighed deeply, the weight of their predicament pressing down on him. "What’s the point? We’re dead either way."

After a pause, his voice softened, tinged with morbid curiosity. "I just wonder… what’s happening to the Lady, the Young Madam, and her arrogant son? What’s he doing to them?"

---

In a separate, heavily fortified holding room within the facility, Lady Selyna Frost sat shackled to a steel table. Her daughter, Lyra Frost, and her son, Kael, were seated on either side of her, each restrained in the same manner. The sterile white room was devoid of any features, amplifying the sense of helplessness.

"Ugh!" Selyna groaned in frustration, pulling at her restraints with renewed fury. Her icy powers, her lifelong source of strength, felt as though they had been ripped away. No matter how much she concentrated, she couldn’t conjure even a single shard of frost.

"What has he done to us?" she muttered under her breath, her voice a mixture of anger and despair.

The hours—or perhaps days—since Silas had captured them had blurred into a disorienting haze. Selyna had spent most of that time testing the limits of her power, only to be met with failure.

It was as if the facility itself nullified her abilities, stripping her of the one thing that had always made her feel invincible.

Her gaze shifted to her children. Lyra sat silently, her head bowed as if deep in thought. Kael, on the other hand, was slumped in his chair, his battered body a testament to his failed resistance against Silas.

The sight of her son’s injuries ignited a fresh wave of fury within Selyna, but it was tempered by the grim reality of their situation.

She clenched her fists, the chains rattling against the table. "I swear, if I get the chance, I’ll rip that man apart," she whispered fiercely, though the emptiness of her threat stung.

Kael stirred, his voice hoarse. "You won’t get the chance, Mother. He’s… he’s too strong. We underestimated him. Again."

Selyna’s expression hardened, but she said nothing. Deep down, she knew Kael was right. They had come at Silas with everything they had, and he had dismantled them with ease.

---

The tense silence was broken by the sound of the door unlocking. The Frost family’s heads snapped toward it, their hearts pounding. The heavy door creaked open, and Silas Kurt stepped into the room.

Clad in a sleek, dark suit that exuded both authority and menace, Silas radiated an aura of control. His piercing gaze swept over the trio, lingering on each of them before he spoke.

"Hi, Lady Selyna," Silas said, his tone cold but oddly casual. "I see you’re already settling into your new environment. Good. Get comfortable—it’ll be your home for the foreseeable future."

Selyna’s jaw tightened, her eyes blazing with defiance. "What do you want, Kurt? If you plan to kill us, just get it over with."

Silas chuckled, a low, menacing sound. He pulled out a chair and sat across from them, his movements deliberate and composed. "Kill you? No, no, no. Killing you would be too simple, too… merciful. You see, I have something far more productive in mind."

He leaned forward, his gaze locking onto Selyna’s. "You and your family are going to stay here until the little game you and your friends have started is over. Until every one of your allies understands the cost of opposing me."

---

Selyna’s lips curled into a snarl. "You think this changes anything? The other families won’t stop just because you’ve captured us."

Silas smiled faintly, leaning back in his chair. "Oh, I’m counting on that. But you see, their loyalty to you isn’t as strong as you think. The longer you’re out of the picture, the more fractured your alliance will become. And by the time I’m done with them, they’ll have no strength left to save you."

Kael, his voice laced with anger, spat, "You won’t get away with this. You’re just one man. You can’t take on the entire world."

Silas turned his attention to Kael, his expression hardening. "One man?" He chuckled darkly. "You’ve seen what I can do, Kael. Tell me, does this still look like the work of just one man?"

Kael flinched but said nothing, his defiance faltering under Silas’s piercing gaze.

Silas stood, his presence towering over them. "Your powers, your legacy, your entire identity—they mean nothing here. In this facility, you’re just people. No titles, no privileges. And trust me, you’ll come to understand what that truly means."

He began pacing the room, his voice growing colder. "You’ve all built your lives on the suffering of others. You’ve abused your power, thinking yourselves untouchable. But here, in my domain, you’ll see what real power looks like."

---

Selyna’s defiance wavered, but she forced herself to speak. "And what do you gain from this, Silas? Revenge? Satisfaction?"

Silas stopped, his gaze boring into hers. "What I gain is balance. What I gain is a world where people like you no longer hold innocent lives in the palm of your hand, crushing them for your amusement."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. "You’re not here for my satisfaction, Lady Selyna. You’re here to send a message."

Lyra, who had been silent until now, finally spoke. Her voice was soft but resolute. "You talk about balance, but what gives you the right? Who made you the judge?"

Silas’s expression softened for a moment, and he looked at Lyra with something resembling pity. "No one gave me the right, Lyra. I took it. Because someone had to."

---

As Silas turned to leave, he paused at the door. Without turning, he spoke one last time.

"Your family’s legacy ends here. Whether you live to see the fallout depends on how well you behave. Think on that."

The door closed behind him with a heavy finality, leaving the Frost family alone in the sterile, suffocating silence.

Selyna slumped in her chair, the weight of her defeat finally sinking in. Kael stared at the table, his fists clenched in frustration. Lyra, her gaze distant, silently contemplated Silas’s words.

For the first time, the Frost family felt powerless.
