Genshin Impact: Transmigrated as Furina's Second Personality

Chapter 102: Provoking Apep

Inside the dungeon, Nahida spread her hands.

Her feelings toward Azar and the other sages were complex.

Indeed, they were obsessed with power and had made grave mistakes in the distribution of knowledge.

But the world was not simply black and white, and humans were complex beings.

Azar and the sages indeed craved power, yet they genuinely cared for Sumeru as a nation.

They had committed numerous wrongs, but it was undeniable that they had also done much for Sumeru.

They had imprisoned Lesser Lord Kusanali, but considering the crisis of the Irminsul and the constant external threats from other nations, they believed that the only way to maintain stability was to confine the inexperienced god and take control themselves.

Despite the god's lack of power and the internal turmoil, they had managed to govern Sumeru for 500 years without major upheaval. Even if they lacked merit, they certainly had endured hardships.

The sages were indeed guilty, and their arrogance was undeniable.

Azar and his peers had always looked down on Nahida, believing her to be too naive and incapable of ruling Sumeru.

But when Felina negotiated with them and posed the question: If one day, Nahida could reclaim power from you through her own wisdom and strategies, wouldn't that mean she has grown into a true god of wisdom capable of leading Sumeru?

At that moment, Azar and the others unconsciously entertained the possibility of such a future, and in the end, they agreed to release Nahida.

It was a complicated emotion—they coveted power and did not want to relinquish it to Nahida.

Yet, at the same time, they hoped that Nahida could grow into a worthy god and guide Sumeru towards greater wisdom.

This conflicting desire led them to constantly challenge her.

They wanted to defeat Nahida to safeguard their authority, but deep down, they also wished for her to defeat them, proving that she had become a competent and reliable deity.

In the annals of history, they had all felt the brilliance of the previous Dendro Archon leading Sumeru in the pursuit of wisdom.

While they were sages who held the highest authority in Sumeru, they were, above all, scholars.

As citizens of the nation of wisdom, under the guidance of their god, they pursued higher wisdom.

For a scholar, such a future was too wonderful, too fulfilling—even power-hungry sages could not resist longing for it.

When Nahida issued the proclamation against them and led the people to the gates of the Akademiya, Azar and the others had already lost.

They were intelligent men—did they not realize that their defeat was inevitable?

Did they not understand that if they chose not to resist and instead cooperated by voluntarily surrendering power, they might have secured a better outcome?

Of course, they knew.

And yet, they chose the most extreme option—to use the divine-level annihilation machine in an attempt to kill Nahida and all those who opposed them.

Why would they make such a seemingly foolish decision?

It was both a test for Nahida and a parting gift.

The test was to see if Nahida possessed the strength to defeat the annihilation machine.

And why was it a gift?

Because time erodes many things, including prestige and faith.

Even if Nahida inherited the accomplishments of the previous Dendro Archon, it would not be enough.

Five hundred years of confinement, coupled with the Akademiya's deliberate suppression, had left Nahida with an abysmally low presence in Sumeru.

As a deity, she had no prestige, no real following.

This was evident in her story quest in the game. Although people called her "Lesser Lord Kusanali" with respect, their words lacked the reverence or awe that people in Inazuma had for the Raiden Shogun or Liyue's people had for Rex Lapis.

The difference lay in Nahida's lack of prestige; she held the title of Dendro Archon but had done little to inspire the people's devotion or awe.

Without sufficient prestige, Nahida would face considerable challenges and resistance in governing Sumeru.

For a ruler, a lack of prestige meant that subordinates would not take their orders seriously.

When the people reached the Akademiya's gates, Azar and the sages had already admitted defeat.

Nahida had used her wisdom and strategies to outmaneuver them—they acknowledged her intellect and capability.

They also acknowledged Nahida as their rightful god.

As the defeated, and as subjects of Nahida, they were willing to offer her their final gift.

Thus, they ascended the high platform and acted as exaggerated, fanatical villains before the eyes of countless citizens.

They shouted to kill Nahida, to kill all who opposed them.

Even after Nahida had subdued the Archon-level combat machine, they continued their madness, drawing their blades and charging at her.

All of this was done to allow Nahida to showcase her strength before the people of Sumeru, to defeat the machine and them, and to save the people.

Originally, they could have survived by simply surrendering their power, but they chose to sever their own escape route and play the role of deranged antagonists—just so Nahida could eliminate them.

In doing so, they gave Nahida the opportunity to establish her authority before the people, to become the savior of Sumeru, and to solidify her faith among them.

This was their final gift to Nahida, as defeated opponents and as the children of the God of Wisdom.

Undoubtedly, they were power-hungry and guilty.

But they truly wished to see Sumeru flourish under the guidance of a true God of Wisdom.

Thus, once they acknowledged Nahida's capabilities, they had no hesitation in sacrificing themselves to pave the way for her.

They were greedy rulers, but at the same time, they were scholars who were almost fanatical in their pursuit of wisdom.

Inside the dungeon, Nahida looked at Azar and the other sages.

"I must admit, I owe you a debt."

"So, I am willing to offer you a chance. Would you be willing to continue serving me?"

Hearing these words, Azar and the others were visibly shaken, lifting their heads in disbelief to look at Nahida.

"You... you're still willing to use us?"

"Have you forgotten how we oppressed and suppressed you before?"

"Have you forgotten the suffering of your five hundred years of imprisonment?"

Nahida smiled gently. "Of course, I haven't forgotten."

"That is why I have stripped you of your positions, status, and power—this is your punishment."

"As for my five hundred years of suffering in confinement, that was the responsibility of generations of sages. I am not so foolish or petty as to blame all of it on your generation alone."

"Though you have made mistakes, I acknowledge your abilities in governing Sumeru for so many years."

"Sumeru currently suffers from a shortage of talent, and the calamity from five hundred years ago is approaching once again. I need more help, so I am willing to give you this chance."

"To the outside world, you are already dead criminals. If you are willing to submit to me and serve me—for the sake of Sumeru—then I will grant you this opportunity."

"If you are unwilling, then you may die."

Nahida's expression was stern, bestowing both grace and divine punishment. Now, the choice lay with Azar and his fellow sages.

After a long silence.

Azar and the others made their choice.

One by one, they knelt before Nahida, bowing their heads in submission.

"Thank you for your mercy, Lesser Lord Kusanali. We are willing to dedicate the rest of our lives to you and to Sumeru!"

In the dimly lit dungeon, as she watched the once-proud sages kneel before her, a faint smile appeared on Nahida's face.

These sages had been stripped of their identity, status, and power.

To the outside world, they were already considered dead.

From now on, they would live in the shadows, using their remaining years to serve as Nahida's advisors and strategists.

Forcing them to live in obscurity, offering their final contributions from the darkness—perhaps this was the most fitting punishment for them.

Nahida took two months to reclaim the authority of Sumeru.

During these two months, Felina was not idle either.

With continuous momentum and propaganda, the enthusiasm for merging with Fontaine among both the desert and Fontaine citizens had reached unprecedented heights.

After two months of preparation, a referendum on joining Fontaine was held in the desert and passed with an overwhelming 90% approval rate.

Since the process was conducted according to proper regulations, and the looming threat of missile fire served as a powerful deterrent, the referendum faced no obstacles, and the desert successfully integrated into Fontaine without a hitch.

No matter the world or the country, expanding territory and annexing new lands is always considered a monumental achievement.

With the desert's inclusion, Fontaine's territory doubled in size. It was no surprise that Furina's prestige in Fontaine had reached unimaginable levels.

Nowadays, the people of Fontaine openly referred to her as "Furina de Fontaine," and some of her admirers from Liyue had even given her a nickname with a distinct Liyue flavor—"Queen of Water."

Wherever she appeared—be it walking the streets or inspecting the desert—people cast her looks of reverence, their eyes filled with unfiltered fanaticism and admiration.

The immense power of faith continuously gathered, and now, the accumulated belief within Felina's consciousness had reached a level comparable to what had been stored in the Oratrice over the past 500 years.

[Ding! Congratulations to the Host for successfully annexing the desert into Fontaine, doubling the nation's territory. Reward: 500,000 Guardian Points.]

[Current Guardian Points have reached the milestone required for unlocking a new ability. Congratulations, master, for unlocking the "Law of Purification"!]

Water possesses the ability to cleanse, and the Law of Purification grants the power to wash away all impurities and purify all curses.

"Wash away all impurities, purify all curses?"

Felina's eyes flickered with excitement. Any ability related to the concept of "laws" was never simple.

"Could this ability even purify the Abyss and forbidden knowledge?"

Felina was pleasantly surprised and immediately wanted to test the power of this ability.

Previously, she had promised to bring rain and prosperity to the desert. Now that the desert had officially joined Fontaine, it was the perfect time to fulfill that promise.

...

Two days later, in the desolate desert.

"Apep! You big idiot!!!"

With Furina's loud shout, the Dendro Dragon Apep manifested in the barren wasteland.

"Foolish Hydro Archon, you're nothing but a fleeting glimmer of light from the heavens. How dare you come here and provoke me?"

Apep harbored no goodwill toward the Seven Archons, always considering the desert as its rightful domain.

Now, the Hydro Archon, Furina had the audacity to set foot in its territory and challenge it, which to Apep, was nothing short of a slap in the face.

Unable to tolerate it any longer, the colossal dragon lunged at Furina, and a battle of epic proportions erupted.

The clash between the Hydro Archon and the Dendro Dragon Sovereign was nothing short of cataclysmic.

That day, torrential rain fell from the sky like countless swords piercing down upon Apep.

In response, Apep summoned endless Dendro energy, forming massive wooden spikes and vines that relentlessly attacked Furina.

Words could hardly describe the terror of this battle—the vast torrents of Hydro energy created a whirlpool that engulfed half the desert, sending down colossal water blades as enormous as mountain ranges.

Meanwhile, gigantic wooden spikes grew ceaselessly from the ground, towering as if they sought to pierce the heavens.

The ground trembled incessantly, storms raged unchecked, and even the sky itself seemed to distort under the immense elemental clash.

The collision of Hydro and Dendro elements scattered countless Bloom seeds across the desert.

These seeds bloomed in explosive bursts, churning the rain-soaked sands, plowing the barren wasteland over and over again, while both elemental forces continued to shape and transform the land.

The god and the dragon battled fiercely from Temir Mountains all the way to Samudra Coast, then to the vicinity of the Vourukasha Oasis, and finally back to Apep's lair.

Having been tormented by forbidden knowledge for a thousand years, Apep's strength had long since diminished to a mere shadow of its former self—so much so that it could be considered extremely weakened.

In such a state, how could it possibly be a match for Furina and Felina? After a grueling fight, utterly exhausted, Apep retreated into its lair, unwilling to continue the battle.

However, with only one-third of the desert's environment improved, how could Felina simply let Apep off the hook?

After Nahida successfully seized power in Sumeru, she even reached out to Felina, offering to send Dendro-element combat machines to aid in the fight, claiming they might achieve similar results.

But Felina declined—she had her own reasons for targeting Apep directly.

The desert originally belonged to Apep's domain. In the past, when the King Deshret sought to establish a kingdom in the desert, even he had to seek permission from Apep.

A deal was struck between Apep and the King Deshret, allowing the latter to establish his kingdom in the desert. However, the agreement also stipulated that upon the King Deshret's death, Apep would consume him and inherit all of his accumulated knowledge.

As everyone knows, things didn't go as planned—after the King Deshret came into contact with forbidden knowledge, a vast portion of the desert was tainted. Even with the assistance of the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, the corruption could not be entirely eradicated.

In the end, the King Deshret chose self-sacrifice to rid the desert of forbidden knowledge and protect his people.

His so-called "self-sacrifice" involved allowing Apep to devour him.

Back then, Apep had mocked the King Deshret for his foolishness, believing itself to have secured a massive advantage. But after consuming the king, the torment of forbidden knowledge plagued it for a millennium, weakening it to the brink of death.

As the Dendro Dragon Sovereign, if Apep were to die, the ensuing eruption of its vast Dendro elemental power would drastically alter the surrounding environment.

According to the in-game lore, Apep possessed formidable regenerative abilities—so long as the corruption of forbidden knowledge was purified, it could slowly recover on its own.

This was precisely why Felina insisted on confronting Apep—she wanted to test the power of her newly acquired Law of Purification to see if it could cleanse the forbidden knowledge within Apep.

But Apep was currently highly irritable and would not simply sit still and allow Felina to cleanse it.

Furthermore, as mentioned before, Apep was fiercely territorial.

Felina had no intention of killing Apep, but now that the desert had been incorporated into Fontaine, it was necessary to assert dominance and ensure Apep wouldn't cause trouble in the future.

With these thoughts in mind, after allowing Apep to rest for three days, Felina and Furina returned.

Having experienced events such as selling fake Primordial Seawater and a drinking contest at Stormterror's Lair with Venti, Furina had become increasingly uninhibited.

Her past repressed experiences made her find great enjoyment in doing things that seemed rebellious and unconventional.

And so, once again, she stood at the entrance of Apep's lair, hurling taunts.

"Apep, you big idiot!"

"Come out and fight me if you dare!"

"Are you scared of me now?"

"Hah! And you call yourself the Dendro Dragon Sovereign? I think you're more like a little weed worm!"

"You!!!"

"Damn Hydro Archon!"

"You have already seized my land, and I did not wish to quarrel with you, yet you return to humiliate me again!"

"You've gone too far!"

Furious beyond belief, Apep let out an earth-shaking roar and charged out of its lair once again to engage in battle with Furina and Felina.
