Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Collei's Battle
The beautiful flowers that bloom on the branches will inevitably wither one day.
To Collei, the missionary was the source of all her misfortune. He had brought the plague, the archon residue, and with them, pain and despair.
Old memories may fade, but a blood feud will always be remembered.
To others, it was just a tragedy. Only a tragedy. One that might make people shed a few tears, but soon after, they would forget. Since the wounds were not on their own bodies, they would never truly understand the depth of the pain.
But for Collei, this was her past—her lived experience.
When she survived the plague, she realized there was one thing she had to do in this life. Find that person and kill him...
Kill him.
Kill him!
At first, Collei was just walking, so the missionary didn't pay much attention to her.
But once she got close enough, she suddenly accelerated.
This speed caught the missionary off guard.
He hadn't expected such a small body to burst with such velocity.
Fortunately, his experience saved him.
He leaned back slightly, narrowly dodging Collei's dagger.
However, the dagger was longer than he had anticipated, and it still managed to draw a thin line of blood.
Collei hadn't severed his throat. Even though the missionary misjudged, he had still managed to avoid a fatal blow. The blade only grazed his skin, causing a shallow cut rather than a serious wound.
Having missed with her first strike, Collei didn't give the missionary any chance to react. She lightly triggered a mechanism on the dagger's hilt, and with a quick motion, she threw the dagger behind her.
Hissss...
Trailing from the thrown dagger was a thin steel wire. Although Collei wasn't very skilled at manipulating the wire, she instinctively used an assassination technique, not expecting it to be so effective.
The wire arced over the missionary's neck from behind, and Collei caught it in front.
Her intention was to strangle the missionary, but her inexperience gave him an opportunity.
The missionary quickly slipped his arm between the wire and his neck.
When the mechanism on the dagger started to tighten the wire, it was blocked by his arm instead of his throat.
"Don't get too cocky, you little brat!"
Having gained a brief moment of respite, the missionary's frustration flared up.
This little girl had aimed every strike at his vital points. If it weren't for his rich combat experience, he might have already died twice.
This wasn't a sparring match; it felt like facing someone with a personal vendetta.
If Bai Luo had been the one wielding the dagger, even if the missionary had dodged the wire attack, Bai Luo would have found a way to continue the assault.
But Collei was not Bai Luo.
Her strength was no match for the missionary, a grown man.
Even with the help of the mechanism, he managed to break free.
"You really are cut from the same cloth, huh?" the missionary sneered, rubbing his neck. Fresh blood stained his fingertips.
If Bai Luo had a habit of poisoning his blades, this wound alone would have been enough to cause serious trouble.
After licking the blood from his fingers, a sinister grin spread across the missionary's face, and something changed in his eyes.
The blood—his own blood—had awakened the beastly nature of the archon residue within him.
And then—
Collei ran.
Yes, without hesitation, Collei bolted toward the side of Starsnatch Cliff and jumped off.
"Damn it!"
The missionary immediately rushed to the cliff's edge, but not to chase after her. He was trying to save her.
He couldn't let her die in battle with him.
A dark suspicion began to creep into his mind.
Could it be that the Ausbilder, Bai Luo, wanted to make a move against him but couldn't find a reason?
Was this jump off the cliff part of a setup to give Bai Luo the excuse he needed to strike?
But as he stood at the edge of Starsnatch Cliff, there was no sign of Collei below.
"What's going on...?"
Just as he was trying to figure out whether this was some conspiracy of Bai Luo's, Collei reappeared behind him and kicked him square in the back.
The assassination techniques Bai Luo had taught her were never about direct confrontation.
Speed, Precision, and Stability are the core principles of Bai Luo's assassination technique.
Speed means to strike quickly, catching the opponent off guard and ending the fight before they even realize what's happening. Prolonged battles are the behavior of fools; the goal is to finish the fight in a single strike.
Precision refers to the accuracy of the attack. If there's an opportunity to hit a vital spot, it must not miss. If there's no clear opening, it's better not to strike at all. The technique values waiting for the perfect moment to deliver a fatal blow.
Stability is the most straightforward of the three: it refers to remaining calm and collected. In Bai Luo's technique, the most important rule is that if the situation looks unfavorable, the assassin must flee immediately. There's no shame in retreating to find another chance to strike. Victory is the only goal, even if it means using methods that aren't exactly honorable.
Just now, it seemed like Collei had jumped off Starsnatch Cliff. In reality, she used the steel wire to swing across a gap beneath the cliff to the other side. Meanwhile, the missionary, too focused on contemplating whether this was all part of some conspiracy, failed to notice that she had looped around behind him.
More importantly, after kicking him off the cliff, Collei had no intention of saving him. Instead, she shoved a large boulder towards him from the side.
This boulder, usually a favorite spot for couples to sit when visiting the cliff, now became the missionary's death sentence.
"You really are cut from the same cloth!" growled the missionary as he pulled out his weapon and clung desperately to the cliffside.
However, this time his words were not in praise but laced with bitterness and anger.
He had witnessed Bai Luo's methods before, but he never expected this little girl to mimic them so perfectly, as if she had been carved from the same mold.
The missionary's weapon was a peculiar curved blade made up of four segments.
When empowered by the archon residue, he could control these segments remotely, reminiscent of a swordsman manipulating their sword with telekinetic powers.
However, without the power of the archon residue, the blade was nothing more than a piece of useless scrap metal—fragile and easily broken.
But the missionary had no other options left. This little girl was clearly intent on killing him, and if he didn't fight back, he really might die here.
"Remember this moment, you little brat! You will learn what true divine power is!" the missionary shouted, clinging to the cliff as he tore off his cloak, revealing scars on the side of his neck.
These scars looked like puncture wounds, with swollen blood vessels radiating from them.
He hadn't yet unleashed his full power. Doing so would expose him to the black flames' burns, and he didn't deem it necessary to go that far against someone as small as Collei.
Behind him, a spectral lion-like figure began to emerge.
This creature had three horns on its head, and its tongue was forked like a snake's. Its bulging muscles hinted at immense physical power.
Just as it was about to let out a powerful roar, it saw... a figure.
Standing behind Collei was a man dressed in a black coat and wearing a white mask. At first glance, he seemed like an ordinary person with no real aura of menace.
However, what truly caught the creature's attention was the shadow behind him.
That cold gaze—just one look was enough to give the spectral beast the illusion that its very soul was freezing.
There was no mistaking it. This was...
With a terrified whimper, the archon residue vanished into thin air under the missionary's bewildered gaze.
No matter how much he tried to summon it back, it refused to reappear.
