Chapter 2: chapter 2
A gentle knock broke the silence.
"Miss Kallen, I've brought the spare clothes you requested," came the soft, polite voice of the miko from the other side of the sliding door.
Kallen straightened up and quickly made her way to the door. Sliding it open, she greeted the miko with a small smile. "Ah, yes. Thank you so much, and sorry for the trouble."
The miko gave a slight shake of her head, her expression calm and courteous. "It's no trouble at all. Here," she said, extending a neatly folded set of clothing toward Kallen.
Kallen accepted it with both hands, her eyes briefly scanning the fabric. "We only had a spare miko outfit available. I hope that's acceptable," the miko added.
"Yes, it's fine. Thank you," Kallen replied, bowing her head politely.
The miko returned the bow gracefully. "Then, I will take my leave now. Please call for us if you need anything else."
"Alright," Kallen said, watching as the miko turned and walked away. She slid the door shut gently, holding the outfit up to get a better look at it.
"A miko outfit, huh…" she murmured, turning it over in her hands. The material was soft and carefully maintained, the crimson and white design standing out starkly.
"Well," she said after a moment, a small sigh escaping her lips, "it's better than nothing."
As if struck by lightning, a sudden realization hit Kallen. Her eyes widened slightly as the thought settled in.
"I need to change clothes…" she muttered, glancing at the miko outfit in her hands. "But… now that I'm in a woman's body, it feels… shameful." Her cheeks flushed faintly, and she rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly.
Her gaze fell to her current outfit, the torn fabric near her stomach a constant reminder of her predicament. "Still… it *is* my body," she reasoned, trying to justify the situation to herself. "It's not like I'm doing anything wrong. And… it's not a lie to say I don't have the desire to… look."
Shaking her head, she turned toward the window, taking a moment to slide it shut firmly. The soft click of the frame closing brought a small sense of privacy, though the air still felt heavy with her hesitation.
Taking a deep breath, Kallen began to remove her clothes. The fabric fell away, revealing her reflection in a small mirror propped against the wall. She stared at herself, her long white hair cascading over her shoulders, her pale skin smooth and flawless.
"..."
Her eyes roamed her new body, her expression unreadable. Finally, she let out a quiet sigh. "I don't feel… any special feelings," she murmured to herself. "Maybe it's because it's my own body…?"
She shook her head again, trying to shake off the lingering awkwardness. "Sigh… just focus," she told herself firmly, picking up the miko outfit.
Kallen stood before the small mirror in the room, adjusting the miko outfit she now wore. The crimson and white fabric fit surprisingly well, the traditional design giving her an air of elegance. She turned slightly, admiring the way the outfit flowed.
"Hmmm, not bad," she mused, a playful smirk crossing her lips. "If Otto saw me wearing this, he'd probably be heartbroken. He'd think I'd decided to marry Sakura. Hehehe." She chuckled at the thought, the image of Otto's devastated face bringing her some amusement.
"But too bad for him—he's not here," she added with a laugh, shaking her head as she tightened the obi around her waist.
Meanwhile, in a different dimension…
A blonde-haired man with sharp green eyes sat at his desk, the faint glow of a screen illuminating his face. His hands moved deftly over the controller as he played a game, his focus unwavering until—
"Achoo!" Otto Apocalypse sneezed unexpectedly, blinking in surprise. He leaned back slightly, rubbing his nose.
"...Weird," he muttered, frowning. "I didn't think this body could catch a cold." He tapped his chin thoughtfully before narrowing his eyes. "Hmph. Maybe those two Anti-Entropy fools are thinking bad things about me."
Shrugging off the thought, Otto leaned forward again, his attention returning to the screen. He grinned slightly as he continued playing his favorite fantasy game.
Back in the original world…
Kallen finished adjusting the outfit and gave herself a final glance in the mirror. She nodded in approval, smoothing the fabric down.
"Alright, time to meet Yae," she said, her voice filled with determination. Turning toward the sliding door, she slide it open.
------------
Kallen stepped out into the open courtyard of the Grand Narukami Shrine, her eyes widening as she took in the sheer scale of the place. The architecture, the vibrant sakura trees, and the serene atmosphere—it was all so much grander and more vivid than the in-game version she remembered.
"This place looks much bigger than in the game," she murmured to herself, her gaze sweeping across the shrine grounds.
She started walking slowly, taking in every detail. Around her, mikos were busy with their duties—sweeping the paths, arranging offerings, and maintaining the shrine's pristine appearance. The soft rustling of their movements blended with the tranquil sound of the wind.
Kallen's attention was drawn to a towering tree at the center of the shrine, its massive trunk adorned with blueish veins that pulsed faintly with energy. A few visitors stood before it, hands clasped in prayer, their faces serene as they sought the blessings of the sacred site.
Her eyes lingered on the tree, a mix of awe and curiosity filling her. "That tree…" she whispered, stepping closer. The faint glow emanating from it seemed almost alive, like it was watching over the shrine.
Just as she was lost in thought, a gentle tap on her shoulder startled her.
"Hmm?!" Kallen turned sharply, her hand reflexively moving to her side as if to guard herself. Standing there, smiling knowingly, was none other than Yae.
"Hmm? How was it? Beautiful, isn't it?"
Kallen turned around to find Yae standing behind her, a knowing smile playing on her lips.
"Ah, yes," Kallen said, nodding slightly as she greeted the shrine maiden.
Yae's smile grew. "Do you want to know a secret?" she asked, her tone teasing.
"No, thank you," Kallen replied quickly, her tone firm but polite.
Yae blinked, momentarily caught off guard. Then, she let out a small, amused chuckle. "Hmmm."
"You're quite interesting, Kallen," Yae said, her voice laced with mischief. She held up a bright orange fruit in her hand. "Perhaps you'd like to taste this Sunsettia fruit? It's very sweet."
Kallen eyed the fruit warily, then glanced at Yae's face. Those amethyst eyes sparkled with an almost predatory excitement, and Kallen felt her instincts flare.
'What is this fox scheming?' she thought to herself, eyeing the fruit with suspicion.
Despite her doubts, the sweet and fresh aroma wafted toward her, making her stomach growl softly. Yae noticed and tilted her head slightly, a sly grin spreading across her lips. "It's really good for a patient who has just woken up."
Kallen hesitated but reluctantly took the fruit from Yae's outstretched hand. "Alr… alright…" she muttered.
The moment she brought it close to her mouth, the enticing scent overwhelmed her. Her hesitation crumbled under the fruit's allure, and she took a big bite.
"!!!"
Her eyes widened as an intense sourness exploded in her mouth, far from the sweetness she had anticipated. Before she could even process the betrayal of her taste buds, her vision blurred, and everything went black.
Kallen's body swayed, and she collapsed to the ground.
Yae crouched beside her, a hand delicately covering her mouth as she giggled. "Oh my… Hehehe. My bad," she said, her voice dripping with amusement.
----------------
Kallen drifted deeper into unconsciousness, and soon, she found herself in an unsettling dream.
The scene was blurry, as if she were looking through a frosted glass. She could make out two small children standing in front of a coffin.
A girl, her shoulders shaking, sobbed uncontrollably as she hugged the closed casket. Beside her stood a boy, his posture stiff, his face expressionless as he said something to the girl.
Kallen tried to move closer, to hear their words, but it felt as though an invisible barrier kept her both far and near. The boy's voice reached her ears, muffled and indistinct.
Suddenly, the girl let go of the coffin and turned to the boy with anger blazing in her teary eyes. She raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face, the sound echoing through the dream.
The girl's voice broke through the fog, and Kallen caught fragments of her words.
"Father died for our life, #£@%#!" the girl yelled, her voice trembling.
Kallen strained to hear the name, but it was garbled, as if something or someone was blocking her from understanding.
"How dare you throw it away for a lie? We %@!£#@ may die, but we never yield!" the girl continued, her words sharp and resolute.
The scene sent chills through Kallen, an overwhelming sense of déjà vu washing over her. 'Why… why does this feel so familiar?'she thought, her heart racing.
The boy stood motionless, his face pale, his eyes wide with shock. Then, slowly, tears began streaming down his cheeks. He stumbled back, his voice breaking as he repeated over and over, "I'm sorry, Kallen… I'm so sorry…"
Kallen's breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "What…?" she whispered, her voice shaking. 'Did he just say my name?'
As if her recognition shattered the fragile dream, the scene around her began to crack and fall apart like glass breaking in slow motion. The vague, blurry figures of the boy and girl suddenly became vivid, and Kallen's heart sank as she saw their faces clearly.
It was a younger Otto and herself.
Before she could process the revelation, the dream disintegrated completely, the shards of the scene dissolving into darkness.
Kallen jolted awake, gasping for air. Her chest heaved as she sat up, her body trembling. Sweat clung to her skin, and her mind raced as she struggled to make sense of what she had just seen.
Her voice came out in a shaky whisper. "What… was that?"
