Chapter 320: Chapter 320: The Outstanding Adventurer
The Doctor was not someone whose martial prowess fell short because of his obsession with research.
When he realized that the golden sword energy could curve, he immediately summoned an elemental shield to block it.
"Interesting."
Under his mask, The Doctor's lips curled into an intrigued smile.
There was more to come!
Seeing the "Sword God" attack fail, Nolan frowned slightly. As expected of the Fatui's second Harbinger—even an incomplete segment of him was formidable.
Smiling, he controlled the "Sword God" to gather sword energy, forming countless golden longswords around 'her' in the sky, creating an imposing scene reminiscent of "Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Sect."
"Let's see how you dodge this!"
With a mere thought, all the golden swords in the sky locked onto The Doctor. As the "Sword God" pressed its hand downward, the swords vanished in an instant.
The Doctor's mind blared with warnings. Almost simultaneously with the disappearance of the golden swords, he moved swiftly from his position, opting not to withstand the attack.
His mental acuity was formidable, and his instincts rarely failed him.
True enough, the golden longswords reappeared densely at The Doctor's previous location, colliding and merging with one another.
Had he not evaded swiftly, those swords would have pierced through his elemental shield and embedded themselves into his body.
An absurdly dangerous attack.
The Doctor felt a slight headache—this kind of space-warping attack was exceedingly troublesome, and even he risked being hit if he wasn't careful.
The golden swords that collided and merged formed a massive sword. Parallel to the ground, its tip pointed at The Doctor, lunging toward him again while the remaining golden swords in the sky also tried to pierce his body through spatial shifts.
"Hmph, impressive strength. You are worth my attention."
The Doctor sneered as his elemental shield contracted tightly to his body, leaving no gaps for Nolan's attacks to exploit.
After all, while space-traversing attacks were formidable, they couldn't phase directly through an intact elemental barrier.
At this point, many of the strikes hit The Doctor, but most were deflected by his close-fitting elemental shield.
Fortunately, Nolan possessed two traits, "Sharp Intent" and "North Wind," which were effective against shields.
The former could create minor cracks in The Doctor's elemental barrier with ease, while the latter gave Nolan's attacks a chance to become imbued with the breath of the North Wind, seeping through barriers.
With so many swords, at least one was bound to breach The Doctor's defenses.
Soon, a golden sword successfully struck The Doctor, and frost spread across his body, finally wounding him.
However, this injury was at best a light wound for The Doctor.
"Ha, even an insignificant ant dares to harm me!"
The Doctor shattered the golden sword embedded in him along with the frost, a fierce and arrogant aura emanating from him.
He then unleashed a surge of powerful mental energy, condensing it into fine needles that shot towards the "Sword God."
When dealing with an incorporeal mental projection, using mental attacks was the most efficient method to inflict damage.
As luck would have it, The Doctor specialized in mental attacks.
Defeating this projection wouldn't be an issue!
Nolan didn't let the "Sword God" stay idle. While dodging, he activated a golden shield and continued to launch golden swords at The Doctor.
Seeing his attacks being effortlessly deflected, The Doctor suddenly lost interest.
This opponent was on par with his own strength, and in a one-on-one battle, at most, they could inflict light injuries on each other, but neither could truly defeat the other.
Moreover, he was is real, while the other was merely a projection!
Without being able to locate the main body of his opponent, winning the battle had no real significance—it would just be a waste of time.
With that in mind, The Doctor glanced at the golden projection with disinterest, found an opening, and unleashed a surge of mental energy, sending it flying several hundred meters away. He then left with the Cryo Hypostasis.
He had already been discovered in the Dragonspine, and the Knights of Favonius might soon hear about it and come searching for him.
Although The Doctor did not fear them, he also didn't want to be interrupted during his experiments.
Thus, completing his experiment and leaving with the data before being found was the best course of action for him.
The "Sword God," which had been knocked back, quickly returned.
But The Doctor and the Cryo Hypostasis were already gone, indicating he did not want to engage further.
It didn't matter much to Nolan either; his main goal was to rescue the adventurers. It was unfortunate, though, that the Cryo Hypostasis had escaped.
It was not only the target of their mission, but defeating it would have also yielded a significant number of Adventure EXP!
The last time they faced a boss monster, the Pyro Regisvine, despite being only level 65, it rewarded them with over 30,000 Adventure EXP upon defeat. The Cryo Hypostasis had an even higher level.
Defeating it would have likely yielded even more than 30,000 EXP.
Nolan felt as if he had missed out on a fortune, and his heart ached.
With a slight sense of regret, he controlled the "Sword God" to approach the group of human-shaped ice statues. Adjusting the force, he gently vibrated the sword, sending out an invisible shockwave.
The ice encasing the unfortunate adventurers cracked and fell off, shattering to the ground.
They had not been frozen for long, so their strong adventurer bodies managed to endure without losing consciousness, although mild suffocation was unavoidable.
Now, they lay sprawled on the snow, gasping for air.
Seeing that they were unharmed, Nolan directed the "Sword God" to leave. The priority now was to continue searching for the Cryo Hypostasis or The Doctor.
After all, whether he wanted to drive them away or defeat them, finding them was necessary.
"Hey, please wait! Thank you for saving us!" The leader of the adventuring party, who had vaguely sensed the events outside while frozen, called out.
She knew it was this golden entity that had rescued them.
She wanted to express her gratitude, but before she could finish, their savior had already departed. Sighing, she thought that they would have to find a way to repay her if they met again.
In the Starglow Cavern, within an unknown passage.
Nolan was following Albedo and the others back to the mountain camp.
The reason he didn't interact with the adventurers wasn't out of cold indifference; the "Sword God" couldn't speak, and staying silent while accepting thanks would have seemed even more impolite.
So, he figured it was better to leave.
As Nolan gathered his thoughts to report The Doctor's escape to Amber and Eula, a notification suddenly popped up on his character panel:
[As An Adventurer, You Have Gained Enough Renown Within The Adventurer Community To Receive The Title: Outstanding Adventurer]
Oh!
Nolan's heart leaped with joy as he realized he had unexpectedly gained a title!
Eagerly, he opened the details to see its effects:
