Gardening Life With Plant Magic: Haku and the Spirits’ Botanical Garden

12: Let's Increase the Production of Magic Repelling Grass

After my nap, I checked the collected weeds.

I first sorted out the magic-repelling grass and planted it in the empty field.

For the time being, let’s prioritize the mass production of magic-repelling grass.

Make sure to let the roots spread well in the pots.

There were also healing grass and mana grass. These were stored in the warehouse for later mass production.

The underside of the straight leaves of healing grass is blue.

Mana grass has jagged leaves with yellowish undersides.

Herbs from another world have strange colors.

The only edible wild grass is probably nobiru.

Horsetails and fuki sprouts will grow on their own if left alone.

Dandelions can be made into coffee, right? I don’t know how to make it, though.

Speaking of which, can I create a coffee tree with creation magic?

Is there a demand for it?

I want to drink it when I grow up.

Oh, please send the weeds to the compost factory.

And please make blocks and bricks with the accumulated stones and clay!

Thank you very much.

This is about what I can do with my plant cultivation skill for now.

I spread paper on a small desk.

Since this world doesn’t have papermaking machines, it’s handmade paper.

It’s really expensive, but Grandpa gave it to me.

The rough texture of the paper makes the pen catch, so I use charcoal wrapped in old cloth (like a charcoal pencil) to write.

Official documents are still made of parchment.

Let’s create a planting plan.

I roughly drew the road from the mansion to the village.

First, plant magic-repelling grass along both sides of the road.

The road runs vertically, so the fields will be horizontal. Let’s make them terraced.

To enable crop rotation, I’ll divide it into four horizontal sections from top to bottom.

The fields will be on eight sides of the road.

The conditions for the crops are that they should not grow too tall.

Potatoes are essential for the poor soil. Then maybe soybeans or edamame, watermelon or melon, and creeping cucumbers, leafy greens like spinach, cabbage, or turnips?

Hmm, it’s hard to decide.

I shouldn’t be too greedy.

Cabbage might be difficult. I remember not being able to make it form a head before. But with the spirits’ help…

After all, it’s a fantasy world.

It should be something easy to grow with a high yield.

Alright!

The first tier near the village will be potatoes on both sides. Staple foods that store well are essential.

The second tier will be watermelons on one side and melons on the other! Fruit vegetables are important!

The third tier will be turnips and cabbages.

The fourth tier will be half edamame and half soybeans. They have different harvest times, though.

With Solanaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Brassicaceae, and Fabaceae, it should be fine.

I’ll report this to Dad later.

Also, the cultivation of magic-repelling grass.

We should get the villagers to help plant it along the stone walls and roadsides!

And so, a week of focusing on cultivating magic-repelling grass.

I produced more than enough. I managed to grow robust seedlings with well-established roots!

I want to shout it out loud!

I did my best!

Strictly speaking, it was my skills and the spirits who worked hard!!

So, let’s hold a report and consultation meeting with Dad.

Everyone, gather in the garden today!

“Thank you all for coming despite your busy schedules.”

Even though I bowed politely and greeted them seriously, why does everyone look so suspicious?

Aren’t I cute?

“You’re being very formal. What’s the reason for gathering everyone?”

Father smiled amusedly, narrowing his eyes.

“Yes, please look at this.”

Without further ado, I took out the seedlings from the plant cultivation skill storage.

Yes, ta-da!

A plant tray (with good drainage!) with fifteen pots of magic-repelling grass.

“The seedlings of the magic-repelling grass are of the highest quality!”

I puffed out my chest proudly.

“…!?”

Everyone froze in astonishment.

Of course! There’s a plentiful supply of magic-repelling grass, which is said to be difficult to cultivate and scarce, right in front of them.

And they are visibly sturdy seedlings.

Such fine seedlings aren’t even sold at seedling stores! Not that I know if there are any seedling stores in this world!

“Haku, is this magic-repelling grass? Where on earth did you get this?”

Father hastily questioned me.

“The other day, when we were making the field, Hugo found it, and I used my skills to multiply it. There are plenty of them. Please plant these along the village walls and roads with everyone’s help!”

Everyone’s gaze turned to Hugo.

Caught in the spotlight, Hugo faltered for a moment.

“Ah, yes, I did mention it to the young master.”

I nodded enthusiastically.

It’s thanks to Hugo. I’ll give him a bag of potatoes as a reward later!

“Even though I can produce seedlings with my skill, they need to be planted one by one by hand. I’d like to ask for the villagers’ help. If the magic-repelling grass increases, won’t it make living a bit safer?”

I conveyed it earnestly.

Father’s expression turned serious.

“Can you prepare a significant number of seedlings?”

“Yes. This basket holds fifteen pots. You can plant them with the pots as they are. There are plenty of these baskets. I can also increase the number if needed. It’s just digging a hole with a shovel and planting them, so even women and children can do it. If necessary, I can also provide compost and fertilizer!”

I explained while gesturing with a shovel in hand.

Oh, I started speaking more fluently.

Well, that’s fine.

Father watched this and put his hand on his chin, deep in thought.

Thinking about all the difficult things is an adult’s job.
