Chapter 73: One boy against an army
Whittaker stares at the enemies he was gonna face. He was appalled by the sight in front, but an instant later, he grasped his calm tightly in his palms.
"This inheritance trial sure seems hard. From the looks of it, there are more than a hundred goblins in total. Oh, more are appearing from behind the towering doors!"
Whittaker thought while gazing at the enemies with his precise eyesight.
On the other hand, the moment he appeared in the inheritance trials, many small and grotesque creatures with an outright malicious smile turned to take a look at him. A hundred pairs of monstrous eyes seething with cruelty stared down at the snowy-haired boy.
Goblins are creatures that bullied the weak and feared the strong. Whittaker was small and seemed docile, just what they like to hunt. They showed him a fearsome smile as they waited for the wall separating them to vanish!
Whittaker and the hundreds of goblin were separated by a thin yet powerful Mana wall which was gonna disappear in some seconds.
"Young one, this is the initial stage of the Hard difficulty inheritance trial. The automatic prompts will explain the rest to you." Elder Zachary's voice rang beside his ears. Right then, a wide holographic notification appeared in the middle of the open ground.
[Conditions to pass the trial: Kill all the goblins!
Rewards:
A: Opening to the next stage
B: Return Portal
C: Low-level mantra elixirs or Blood vessel and energy pathways opening Elixirs.]
[The Mana Wall will disappear in ten seconds]
Whittaker gazed at the hundreds of short goblins with a malignant smile of his own. He thought with murderous intent, 'The faster I am done with them the greater my end rewards will be!'
The monsters were merely a treasure vault for him. A source of experience points and costly elixirs. Whittaker didn't waste the ten seconds provided by the trial grounds. In less than ten seconds, he had calculated the most appropriate response to this situation.
'Fighting against all of them would lead to death. I only have two hands while there is more than a hundred enemy, some of them will surely reach me and land hits on my body and I might even bleed to death. I need to separate them into many groups! The best spell would be Frost Shield!'
Whittaker could fight a dozen of them: however, against an ocean of goblins, even an E-ranked mage will start to panic. The best way to effectively kill them all was to fight them, one group at a time!
The ten seconds ended and the waves of goblin rushed towards him, each clutching a mace or bone-pick in its greenish hand.
He knew that the goblin will rush towards him so he immediately casts [Frost Shield] three times. Nine Frost Shield materialized in an area around him, encircling him from all four sides, just a narrow pathway was opened in the middle: from there only five to six goblins could pass at a time, more specifically, Whittaker has created a small arena in the open field.
Dozens of the goblins rushed into the narrow pathway to show Whittaker what pain feels like: However, they were blocking each other as the pathway was too narrow. Just like he calculated, Whittaker only had to face 4-6 goblins at a time. Moreover, enemies in the chilling field created by the Frost Shield have their movement speed decreased by 5% and are inflicted by a frost stack. This effect stacked three times and these goblins were nearly frozen by the time they reached the arena!
Heck, these greenish goblins have become blue and they moved slower than snails!
They were defeated before they even reached their target!
Whittaker beamed a smile and performed some hand signs, soon after the Blood Drinker that was clutched in his hands started to shake.
Facing the goblins and their relative, the snowy-haired boy's Reddish black Sword raised to the air. Struck by the gleaming Frost, the sword glistened high up in the air. With a single thought, Blood Drinker whisked ahead and butchered the goblins that had come out of the narrow pathway.
A red line was drawn on their neck, a second later, their heads separated from their body and rolled on the ground!
In a sense, Whittaker showed them mercy as Sword Saint Louis has said,
"To show mercy to one's enemies was taking away their lives in a single strike."
On the other side of the battlefield, a lot of goblins shattered the Frost shield acting as towering walls that separated him from the others, but Whittaker chanted Frost's shield and reinforced the defense lines every time.
Each time the Frost shield shattered, the snowy-haired boy would cast it again to reinforce the defense lines. Whereas the goblins treading the narrow pathway to reach him were butchered like pigs and chicken.
_____
Outside the open field.
"With regards to his battle strategy, this young boy has exceeded my expectations. If he just came up with this battle strategy then he will become the next Great general of the Northern border." Elder Zachary has been witnessing his performance and he was impressed by Whittaker. The young boy has lived up to the expectation of Elder Zachary.
Elder Zachary strokes his white beard in thoughtfulness and exclaims in glee,
"Hahahaha, Abaddon has found its vessel, yet a bright gem has been birthed in the Water kingdom. Hahahaha!"
His eyes shine with a sharp glint as he gazes down at the F-ranked mage, "If he successfully passes all the trial then I will let him have a bath in the Celestial Wine formation."
The old man was grinning because of the thoughts revolving in his mind. Celestial Wine formation, a formation that is used to strengthen a mana pool was among the top ten Formation of the entire Awakened continent. Once Whittaker uses it, his mana pool will take one wide step towards the greatest form of a mana pool, "Perfect Mana Pool!"
______
Inside the open field!
Whittaker's strategy was extremely effective. The Frost Shield effectively blocked, slowed, and froze his enemies before they could reach him. Also, the deadly combination of telekinesis and Blood Drinker butchered the goblins.
All along Whittaker was standing in a single place, easily multitasking in this grand battle and killing the goblins.
Two hours passed and the entire open field was filled with the scent of blood and death.
All the goblins had dropped dead only a snowy-haired boy remained standing!
