Chapter 22: The Captives I
GOT: The Dangerous Traveler 22
Lyn Corbray
Year 2010 AD – Georgia
Ciri walked beside Lyn, clearly uncomfortable with the situation. Every now and then, she glanced at Glenn and Maggie, who were still tied up and being dragged by the horses. Glenn had tried to loosen the ropes a couple of times, but Lyn's watchful gaze always stopped him. Finally, Ciri broke the tense silence.
"We need to decide what we're going to do with them. We can't drag them along the whole way."
Lyn, with his characteristic smile, shrugged. "I already gave my solution. We just kill them. Problem solved."
Ciri stopped in her tracks and glared at him. "You know I'm not going to accept that, Lyn."
Lyn sighed dramatically, placing a hand on his chest as if he'd been wounded. "I know, I know. Always so moralistic. Fine, then I propose something else: we release one and keep the other. That way, we still have a guide, but we're not burdened with both."
The proposal took Ciri by surprise. "Release one? What kind of solution is that? Why not just let both of them go?"
"Ah, dear Ciri, because that would be too boring." Lyn turned to her with a mischievous grin. "Besides, think about it: if we release one, their group will have more reason to chase us. That adds a little excitement to the journey."
"Are you saying you want them to chase us on purpose?" Ciri looked at him incredulously, crossing her arms.
Lyn nodded, as if it were the most logical thing in the world. "Exactly. There's nothing like a little pressure to keep us moving."
Ciri shook her head, clearly frustrated. "You're an idiot. Don't you have enough with our current pursuers?"
"It's part of my charm." Lyn winked at her. "So, what do you say? Shall we do it my way?"
Ciri let out a long sigh. "Who do you propose we release?"
Lyn gestured toward Glenn with his head. "Him. The girl seems more valuable. She might be useful to us later."
"More valuable?" Ciri raised an eyebrow, clearly suspicious. "Right. You're only saying that because you want to keep staring at her backside along the way, aren't you?"
Lyn's laughter was immediate, a carefree sound that only annoyed Ciri further. "Are you accusing me of being a pervert, dear Ciri? That hurts, truly."
"And you deny it?" she shot back, arching an eyebrow.
Lyn glanced at Maggie, who was watching him with a mix of fury and helplessness. "Well, if I have to be honest... it's not an unpleasant view."
Maggie clenched her teeth, clearly holding back an insult. Glenn, on the other hand, couldn't stay silent. "Let her go! You have no right to do this! If you're going to release anyone, it should be her."
Lyn turned to him with a mocking smile. "Ah, how noble of you. But no, thank you. I've made my decision."
Before anyone could protest, Lyn drew his sword and, with a quick and precise motion, cut the rope binding Glenn. Glenn stumbled forward, trying to keep his balance.
"There you go, hero. You're free. Now run." Lyn raised Randall's pistol and aimed it at Glenn's feet.
Glenn looked at him, confused. "What are you doing?"
"I'm giving you a chance. Come on, start running." Lyn fired at the ground near Glenn's feet, making him jump in fright.
"Lyn!" Ciri exclaimed, outraged. "What the hell are you doing? Stop being such an ass!"
"What? I'm just helping him get started. He seems a bit slow." Lyn fired again, this time closer. Glenn, finally, started running, tripping over roots and branches on the ground.
"Lyn, this is absurd." Ciri tried to approach him, but Lyn completely ignored her, firing once more. Glenn was now running with all his might, trying to get as far away as possible.
Finally, Lyn lowered the gun and turned to Ciri with a satisfied smile. "Well, that was entertaining. Now we can move on."
"Entertaining?" Ciri looked at him with a mix of disbelief and disgust. "You're a damn idiot, you know that?"
"Yes, and I love it." Lyn mounted his horse again, tugging on Maggie's reins. "Come on, we still have a ways to go."
Maggie, who had watched everything with a mix of hatred and despair, clenched her fists. "You're a monster."
"In your vocabulary." Lyn shrugged, seemingly indifferent. "But if I am, I'm a monster with style."
Ciri shook her head, clearly fed up. "You're infuriating, Lyn. Absolutely infuriating."
"And you adore me for it." Lyn winked at her before looking at Maggie. "Now, darling, I hope you don't try anything foolish. I wouldn't want to have to cut another rope."
Maggie glared at him with eyes full of fury but said nothing. She knew any word could make her situation worse.
As they moved forward, Lyn began to hum a tune, completely carefree. Ciri, on the other hand, remained silent, but her expression made it clear she was deep in thought.
"You know, Ciri?" Lyn said after a while. "I think this journey is going to be much more interesting than I expected."
Ciri didn't respond, simply looking ahead, wishing this would all be over soon. She was almost regretting bringing Lyn along. Fortunately, his skills were proving very useful to her.
"That's life," Lyn commented suddenly, noticing that Maggie's occasional glances were becoming more frequent. The woman seemed to think that Lyn, being controlled by Ciri, was harmless, as the sheer terror she felt at the beginning was now turning more into anger.
It seemed Maggie was doing everything she could to keep her distance, straining the rope to its limit. Lyn let out a small laugh, amused by the futility of the effort.
"What are you laughing at now?" Ciri asked, breaking the silence.
"Nothing in particular." Lyn glanced at Maggie out of the corner of his eye. "It just amuses me how people try to avoid the inevitable. It's adorable, don't you think?"
Ciri ignored him and changed the subject. "Lyn, there's something I've always wanted to ask you. You never talk about your past, about what you did before coming to Braavos."
The question caught him off guard. For a moment, Lyn was silent, staring at the horizon as if debating internally. Finally, he let out a long sigh and shrugged. "I suppose that's fair. After all, you've shared quite a bit of your story with me. Alright, I'll tell you."
"Is it a long story?" Ciri asked with a smile.
"Depends on how much detail you want. But don't worry, I'll make it interesting." Lyn adjusted his horse's reins and began.
Next, Lyn told Ciri about how he went from tournament to tournament, always winning. He spoke about his father, Lance Corbray, as well as his brothers. Then he recounted the episode at the Tourney at Harrenhal, how he ended up facing Barristan Selmy. He told her about his adventure with Ashara and how he ended up killing Arthur Dayne and stealing Dawn. At that point, Lyn showed Ciri the sword.
After that, he told her how he went to Maidenpool and met a Faceless Man. From there, he was confined in the House of Black and White for a year until he completed his training and was set free. That's when he met Ciri. How his visions led him to her.
Some parts of the story were lies, of course, or censored. Lyn would never tell her that his original orders were to kill her.
"From that story, I draw two conclusions," Ciri said dryly.
"What are they?"
"You're a bastard, you think too much with your lower head, and... you're a pervert!"
Well, that hadn't gone so well for Lyn Corbray.
