Chapter 84: 84. The Small Goal Is Near
For Jason Liu, making money is easy. He doesn't really care who makes it, as long as it comes in.
"If Bert wants it, let him have it!" Jason thought to himself.
With that in mind, Jason Liu spoke confidently, "I give you my word, Bert! When the next shipment arrives, you'll be the first merchant in the West to buy from me, I promise!"
"Haha, thank you so much, Mr. Jason! Your generosity and kindness mean the world to me," Bert replied with a wide smile.
Generosity? Yeah, right. What he's really happy about is the massive profit, Jason thought.
Jason smiled as he picked up a heavy lump of "bull-shaped gold" that Bert had brought in.
It weighed 8.73 kilograms.
Jason's eyes lit up at the weight.
Besides the large chunk of gold, Bert had also brought two smaller pieces—one weighing 2.54 kg and the other 4.79 kg.
Jason decided to buy all three pieces at the rate of pure gold by weight, meaning he owed Bert for a total of 16.06 kg.
With gold content of about 30 grams per golden dragon, Jason needed to pay Bert around 536 golden dragons.
Jason had over 5,000 golden dragons in his possession, so paying for this was no problem at all.
And even better, Bert didn't want payment in gold coins. He wanted to convert the entire amount into goods to take back West.
In short, Jason didn't need to hand over any actual gold dragons. He'd be trading inexpensive goods like pens, paper, and soap in exchange for three pieces of valuable gold that could sell for a fortune back in the modern world.
Bert ended up buying 10,000 gel pens, 100,000 refills, 100,000 sheets of A4 paper, 5,000 sheets of A1 paper, 10,000 bars of soap, and 100,000 small pieces of soap.
The total came to 1,275 golden dragons.
After subtracting the cost of the gold (536 golden dragons), Bert still owed 739 golden dragons.
Jason, being generous, knocked off 9 golden dragons, leaving Bert with a total of 730 to pay.
Bert was thrilled. He quickly arranged for his men to count the goods and load them onto the wagons outside the store.
Before Bert left, Jason reminded him to keep an eye out for more natural gold nuggets and bring as many as possible from the West.
Bert enthusiastically agreed, promising to contact other merchants in the western regions and send more gold to Jason.
As Bert's convoy of carriages disappeared down the road, Jason could barely contain his excitement. He rushed back into the store, carrying the box of gold, and asked Bella to call Jon for him.
He instructed Jon to continue training the guards in his absence over the next few days and told Lena and Martha to manage the store while he was gone. Jason reassured them that he'd only be gone for a short time, so they didn't need to worry.
Lena, Martha, and Jon were all used to Lord Jason disappearing from time to time, so they simply nodded and promised to keep everything in order.
Jon, in particular, vowed to train the soldiers well and not disappoint Jason.
With his mind at ease, Jason took the gold and returned to his room. From there, he sent the gold pieces back to the modern world.
Once back in his modern warehouse, Jason found an old bag and carefully wrapped the wooden box containing the three gold nuggets. He then called a taxi and headed back to his villa.
When he arrived home, he went to his bedroom and placed the box on his bed. He took out the two smaller pieces of gold and placed them in a couple of old shoeboxes.
The largest nugget, the 8.73 kg piece that looked like a bull's head—his "bull gold"—he placed in a separate shoebox. He tucked it into his closet, hiding it under a pile of clothes.
Jason wasn't too worried about someone stealing it. After all, he lived alone.
But he didn't plan to hold onto the gold forever. He wanted to sell it.
First, Jason checked the current market price of similar gold nuggets. He found a lot of information online.
One auction had sold a 185g falcon-shaped gold nugget for 2.25 million yuan.
Another auction had sold a turtle-shaped gold nugget weighing 597g for 7.5 million yuan.
The most impressive auction he found had sold a 3.56kg swallowtail-shaped gold nugget for 45 million yuan.
Using these numbers, and with the price of gold steadily rising, Jason estimated that his bull-shaped nugget could fetch at least 90 million yuan. If he auctioned it, it might even sell for hundreds of millions!
Excitement rushed through him. He was about to hit his first major financial milestone!
Next, he checked the prices of more ordinary gold nuggets. They weren't as valuable as the ones shaped like animals or birds, but they still fetched a decent amount.
A 7.85kg gold nugget found by a herder had been sold for 15 million yuan.
Jason figured his two smaller nuggets, weighing 2.54kg and 4.79kg, could sell for about 15 million combined.
All in all, Jason was looking at hundreds of millions of yuan for these three pieces of gold.
What a huge profit!
Calming himself down, Jason decided to sell the two smaller pieces first and wait for the right buyer for the large bull-shaped nugget.
He made a call to the owner of the Hengli Gold Store, Boss Wang, hoping to find someone interested in buying.
"Hey, Brother Liu, long time no hear!" Boss Wang answered cheerfully. "Got some business for me?"
"Boss Wang, I need your help with something. Do you know anyone who's in the market for gold nuggets?" Jason asked quietly.
"Gold nuggets?" Boss Wang's voice grew louder with interest. "Did you get your hands on one?"
Jason kept his response vague. "Yeah, I got a small one, and I'm looking for a buyer. Thought I'd ask if you know anyone."
"How big is it?" Boss Wang asked.
"Just over two kilograms," Jason replied, mentioning the smallest one.
"Any special shape?" Boss Wang pressed on.
"No, just a regular nugget," Jason admitted.
After a brief pause, Boss Wang replied, "Alright, give me a minute. I'll make some calls and see if there's any interest."
Jason hung up the phone and waited for Boss Wang to get back to him.
