Chapter 117: chap-114
With the emergence of Marvin robots and the massive expansion of offline production lines, various fighter planes, tanks, and other heavy weapons were also produced. Merlin finally overcame the shortcomings of insufficient productivity.
Initially, Merlin planned to leverage the aftermath of the Los Santos incident to produce satellites, space-based cannons, and nuclear submarine killer whales in one go. However, considering the printer technology in Death Stranding, he decided it would be more convenient to enter the world of Death Stranding instead.
At the same time, skill chips and bionic humans began to appear on the platform, though their prices were prohibitive for many players. Ordinary skill chips ranged from 50,000 to 500,000, high-quality chips cost 3 to 10 million, and rare ones reached up to hundreds of millions.
The price of professional chips was comparable to that of treasures, but special professional chips were astronomically priced, with fewer than ten players able to afford them.
The pharmacist profession, in particular, stood out with its unique pharmaceutical formulations—any single one of which was considered epoch-making in biotechnology.
In addition, androids became a hit. Fun androids sold out quickly, followed by security androids. Although they were not as advanced as the Transformers crafted by Manhattan players, having an android companion was still desirable.
The platform's operations gradually stabilized, and as production lines expanded, servers continued to grow. In Asia, Neon was already starting to gain traction.
On this day, after Merlin finished compiling general information about Death Stranding, he was ready to enter the game world. However, a knock on the door interrupted him.
"Knock, knock, knock..."
Merlin opened the door, surprised to see a woman in a red dress. Her delicate face looked tired.
"Ms. Justine, is something wrong?"
"Is it convenient for me to come in?" Justine asked, pursing her lips.
"Of course, come in." Merlin stepped aside, allowing her into the room.
"Is this about President Hammer? I'm sorry about that," Merlin said as he handed her a cup of coffee and sat across from her.
At the mention of her father, Justine's expression darkened.
"I didn't expect my father to do such things," she said, shaking her head in disappointment. Then, straightening up, she added, "But I'm not here because of my father. I want a project in your hands."
With her father imprisoned, Justine, the first heir, was set to take over as president. However, the other shareholders of Hammer Industries were unwilling to let her become CEO without a fight.
With most of her father's men defecting for their own interests, her position had weakened, and her authority was being eroded. While she could follow Stark's example and hand over the company's affairs to her father's associates while serving as a nominal president, she was unwilling to accept such a passive role.
Although she lacked Stark's unique talent to make a comeback, she knew someone who might fill the gap—Merlin. As a recent addition to the company, personally invited by Hammer, he was the ideal candidate.
"The project in my hands?" Merlin raised an eyebrow, setting his coffee down.
"Take a look at this," Justine said, handing her phone to him.
Merlin glanced at the screen:
[Stark Industries to Launch a Parent-Child Technology Exhibition at Christmas]
[Featured Exhibit: Dabai, an Intelligent Personal Medical Assistant Robot Developed by Stark Industries and Merlin]
[The Medical Chip in Dabai Contains Millions of Medical Data Points and Can Instantly Analyze Body Indicators]
[Powered by Stark Industries' Clean Energy Boxes...]
"So that's it..." Merlin said, nodding as he returned the phone.
"So..." Justine looked at him expectantly.
"Sorry," Merlin said, shaking his head. "The Baymax robot technology has been exclusively licensed to Stark Industries through a contract with Pepper."
Hearing this, Justine's expression fell. Though she had anticipated this outcome, she couldn't hide her disappointment. After all, Baymax was a project Merlin had worked on before joining Hammer Industries, and she had no claim to it.
However, Merlin's next words rekindled her hopes, leaving her visibly excited.
"While the Baymax project is unavailable, research on androids has progressed significantly."
"Androids? Do you mean the ones recently launched on the Rockstar platform?"
"Exactly. You're likely aware of my collaborations with the platform. The androids are my research."
"If you're interested in this project, I can transfer it to you."
"Really?" Justine asked, her eyes wide with excitement. With the android project, she could secure her position in Hammer Industries.
"Of course. I'm still part of Hammer Industries, and it's only right to share my projects internally," Merlin said with a faint smile.
Justine's face froze. She understood the subtext—whether she could secure the project depended on what she could offer in return. After all, others could also make competitive offers.
"What do you want? How about... me?" Justine asked coyly, raising her lips in a seductive smile.
"You're a bit old, don't you think?" Merlin teased, raising an eyebrow.
"..."
Justine was rendered speechless. She was in her early twenties—young, beautiful, and full of vitality. How could she be "old"?
"I can give you this project, but the actual rights and interests belong to me."
"You can, however, use this project to secure a foothold in the company," Merlin stated his terms plainly.
Justine narrowed her eyes and sat back down, her gaze fixed on the seemingly harmless high school student in front of her.
She realized she might have underestimated him. She had always assumed he was just an innocent boy chasing his dreams, but now it was clear that wasn't the case.
"You must understand that my father has always supported your research!" she argued, attempting to leverage her father's past generosity.
"Mr. Hammer was primarily interested in the core technology of Iron Man in my possession," Merlin replied, his tone calm and unaffected. "But I am still grateful for his support, which is why I am offering this project to you."
Merlin's resolve was evident. Though he wasn't particularly concerned about money, he preferred to keep the initiative in his own hands rather than relying on others to allocate resources.
Justine mulled over his response, her frustration evident. After a moment of contemplation, she gritted her teeth and agreed.
No matter the cost, her priority was to establish herself firmly in the company.
"Fine," she said reluctantly. "But you don't need your guardian to oversee this project."
