Chapter 297: 290 Earth Refuge
"The Star Alliance government has officially issued an emergency evacuation order. Over two hundred member countries and regions around the globe are entering a state of emergency. Please remain calm and follow the instructions of service personnel to orderly enter your local shelters for evacuation. If there are no shelters available locally, the government will deploy transportation to take you and your family to a safe location…"
In a residence filled with Japanese style, the 3D TV broadcasted the news. A young housewife looked at the TV with a worried expression, her face full of concern. Just then, the door opened and a middle-aged man with an exhausted look walked in.
"Ah, dear, you're finally back."
Yakushimaru, an engineer at the orbital factory, nodded and said, "All personnel in orbit have been evacuated, even from Ruyi City. Everyone has taken flights down to the surface. Dear, is our house ready?"
The woman clasped her hands in front of her and said, "Everything is packed up. I've done it all according to the evacuation instructions and didn't bring anything extra."
Yakushimaru hummed in response, "There's no need to bring extra. Each shelter will provide us with ample food and other necessities."
His wife was still somewhat worried, "But there are so many people, will there really be enough for everyone?"
Despite his exhaustion, Yakushimaru still managed a smile, put his arm around his wife's shoulder, and said, "This isn't the old times anymore. The resources in just the shelters alone are enough to sustain everyone for ten years. And don't forget, the Star Alliance has Atomic Substance Construction Technology; all used materials can be recycled and reused."
His wife, still puzzled, asked, "If our technology is so advanced, why are we still being invaded by those Teizene aliens?"
Yakushimaru was unable to clarify, "I don't know that myself, but I think we will win in the end. It shouldn't take too long."
Right then, the doorbell of the Yakushimaru home rang. Yakushimaru and his wife hurried to the door and saw two men in military uniforms standing outside.
The soldiers saluted the couple and then said in Chinese, "Mr. and Mrs. Yakushimaru, we are from the Universe Army Gray Hand Legion. We are here to collect your son."
Yakushimaru let out a sigh and then with a sense of resignation said, "Has it come to this? Ah, it's beyond belief that we adults are relying on children to fight at times like these."
The soldier spoke earnestly, "Once your son joins the Gray Hand Legion, he is no longer a mere boy. Your son is currently ranked third in the Gray Hand Legion's scoring system; he is an exceptionally skilled Pilot, an indispensable talent for us."
Yakushimaru said with pride, "Is that so? I never expected the boy to be more capable than his old man."
Yakushimaru's wife, head bowed, tears swirled in her eyes. She clearly ached for her son, but she knew he couldn't avoid going. In a low voice, she said, "I'll go call him."
Before she could turn around, Kentarou's voice came from behind.
"I'm here." The voice of the youth always seemed casual. He wore a standard school uniform; the shirt, a bit too large, hung loosely on his slim figure. A large pair of headphones rested on his neck, and he carried a single-strap bag, his hand resting on it as if it held great importance.
He walked past his parents, took a few steps forward, and then turned back, his face trying to maintain a cool expression, but his eyes were already reddening.
"Watch me go defeat those Lizard People."
His father nodded vigorously, "Go for it, Kentarou, you're the best."
His mother, with red-rimmed eyes, also admonished, "Kenta, listen to your seniors and commanders, okay? Mom and Dad will be waiting for you to come home."
Afraid he couldn't hold back any longer, Kentarou either hummed or grunted, and turned to leave. Two soldiers saluted the Yakushimaru couple once more and took Kentarou aboard a small flying craft.
Seated by the window of the craft, Kentarou looked out at the scenery—everything on the ground had shrunk. At this moment, Tokyo seemed bustling but not particularly panicked. This might have to do with the fact that the people of Earth were accustomed to facing disasters, or perhaps ever since the Star Alliance Era, the government's guidance and assistance had reached everyone closely. Everyone had instructions on their personal devices to head to specific shelters, or to get help when needed.
The city looked no different from the rush hour peaks, with everyone orderly heading to shelters without overwhelming congestion. There were also a large number of Bionic Humans assisting on the streets, making life more orderly than in the old days.
Kentarou, holding his phone, looked at news from around the world. The situation globally was not much different, and the anticipated chaos had not erupted. Both the Earth Defense Force and the Bionic Humans were working hard to maintain order during the evacuations. For over a year, the Star Alliance had been constructing massive underground shelters worldwide. While they might not accommodate the entire global population of over seven billion, they could at least shelter most.
Suddenly, an icon of a chubby face popped up on his phone's screen. Kentarou pressed the answer button, and a green voice speaking mandarin came through from a guy about his age.
"Hey, Ghost Fist Rabbit, have the legion's people picked you up?"
Kentarou had always been known as Ghost Fist in the Gray Hand Legion, but since his icon was a cool rabbit, people called him Ghost Fist Rabbit.
"I've been picked up. What about you?" Kentarou spoke in a relaxed tone to his friend.
"I've already arrived at the Gray Hand Legion's base in the Americas. Haha, but as for meeting the Lizard People, we probably won't see each other this time. However, I think when the real fight starts, we can still form our own squads, like old times. Let's team up."
Kentarou was very familiar with this guy. The two had been collaborating for more than three months, and he had managed to boost his points to third in the entire legion. It was impossible to part with this partner, with whom he had such a great synergy.
"OK."
Having discussed serious matters, the guy on the other end began to ramble again.
"Ah, I just don't know where my idols have gone. I checked the official BBY website and the fan club portal, and they said the performance scheduled for the day after tomorrow has been canceled. The girls must have gone to shelters. I really want to be in the same shelter as them, 23333. Anyway, Ghost Fist Rabbit, you've got to work hard to protect my idols."
Kentarou face-palmed, speechless. His buddy from Brazil, similar in age, was an even more devoted anime fan than Kentarou, a second-time Earthling. He'd fallen deep into the clutches of the cat-girl band BBY and would always talk to him about these things.

He looked out the window, drifting off for a moment. He too had people he needed to protect—his parents, his family, this city, and this planet.
