Frieren: Understand Humans, Aura!

Chapter 31: You Are My Fun Friend, Aura

Peng——

With an imperceptible sound, the dark stream of light was bounced away.

'Uh, no reaction?'

The magic beam that requires the obedient magic to re-determine the master and servant according to the mana is an incomprehensible curse for humans and elves, and there is no way to resist it!

'Try again.'

"Frieren, kill yourself!"

The black light flashed between Aura's fingers again, and this time it was caught by Frieren before it reached her. Frieren seemed to be very curious about this little thing, and she poked it lightly. The black light that was struggling like a mouse was poked out of its air and dissipated into smoke.

"…I did teach Frieren the basics of demon magic, but…but I didn't teach her anything at the Sage level…how could she…this is impossible! How could she analyze the Seven Sages of Destruction-level curse by herself!?"

Big drops of sweat rolled down Aura's cheeks.

At this point, she couldn't stop.

Frieren was walking towards her step by step. The elf must be had heard the order she had just given and was completely betrayed. She didn't know how Frieren would treat her.

If she decided to kill Aura, that would be a mercy. But if she let her live and revealed the demon's intels, Aura would be utterly disgraced.

Aura's voice was miserable and choking. She tried one last time:

"Frieren, kill yourself!"

"?"

The elf on the other side just tilted her head.

It really won't work.

"I'm sorry."

"..."

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Frieren, please don't say that command!"

"..."

"Spells, money, my horn, information about the demons, anything! I'll give you everything you want, please, Frieren, don't kill me! I'm willing to do anything!!"

"..." Frieren walked closer and finally heard the words clearly.

Tilting her head in confusion, "Why would I kill you?"

"What have you been talking about since the beginning?"

"I injured my ears while experimenting with explosion magic. You have to speak louder so that I can hear you clearly."

"I didn't say anything." Aura, who had been kneeling on the ground with her head buried, raised her head as if nothing had happened, patted the dirt off her body, and pretended nothing had happened.

"But I heard your last sentence, Aura."

"What?"

"You said, 'I'll do anything,' right?"

"Actually, it's not [anything]..."

"Don't worry, Aura, I won't let you do anything worse than [killing you]. You are my most fun friend."

"Although I am a demon and don't know much about human culture, what you want to say is [best friend] instead of [most fun friend], right, Frieren?"

"Nope~~~"

"..."

"Aura, don't run away this time!"

It was over. Just as Aura tried to turn and flee, her body was forcibly held in place. Her feet felt like they were chained, and even when she tried to crawl away, her hands froze upon touching the ground, rendering her immobile.

Aura could only stand still, like a puppet, waiting for Frieren's judgment.

Seeing Aura standing there in a daze, Frieren looked up curiously, paced around Aura, and finally stopped behind her. The elf's movements were deliberate and slow, as if she were studying an interesting specimen.

Standing on tiptoe, the white-haired elf raised her hand curiously and grasped Aura's horn, causing the sensitive demon to wail.

"Although I don't quite understand the reason, thank you, Aura, for always being willing to listen to me." Frieren's voice was soft, almost tender, as she spoke.

"You are my best friend and my only playmate." There was an innocence in her words, a purity that contrasted sharply with Aura's own fears and doubts.

"There are no elves my age in the village, and I have been missing you."

"This time, please come into the village with me. I want to introduce you to the others."

Aura sighed in relief. Frieren still showed no ill will towards her, so what she said before was most likely ignored by Frieren. So at least at this moment, Aura's life was saved.

However, what would come next?

Frieren led Aura by the hand towards the elven vilage. As they approached, Aura saw the buildings made of vines and trees, causing her to gulp nervously.

'It's over. I'm going to be dissected by a bunch of evil elves.' Her imagination ran wild, picturing all sorts of grim fates awaiting her at the hands of curious elven mages.

If only all elves were as foolish as Frieren and had no hostility towards Aura, it would be great. Most likely, the elven mages would attack her the moment they saw the double horns on Aura's head.

"Wait, wait, Frieren, I'm a demon... are you really going to take me into your village?"

Aura couldn't resist Frieren's orders, but she still had a mouth. Since her body couldn't resist, she tried to persuade with words.

At this point, Aura wasn't worried about her own safety. The mana in the elf village allowed her to sense the mana pillar leaking from a long distance. There was a pillar of mana, but its strength was limited. Aura's demonic senses told her that while the elves were undoubtedly powerful, their collective strength was no match for a great demon like herself.

While this might threaten an ordinary demon, she was a great demon, far beyond the abilities of typical mages. Even if Frieren's commands prevented her from harming the elves, she could still escape. Frieren wouldn't stop her, right? And without Frieren's restrictions, could the elven mages really harm her?

This is where Frieren was born and raised. It is her home. She cannot leave here. But if she is found to be colluding with the demons, how will the elves in the village treat her? Aura's thoughts took a darker turn as she considered the social and political ramifications for Frieren. Will they expel Frieren from the village, or something worse...

Ah, don't get me wrong, let me make it clear first, she, Aura, is not worried about Frieren. She was just afraid that without her ties to the village, Frieren might revert to that cold, ruthless elf who slaughtered demons everywhere.

Aura was worried purely for her own sake.

Frieren turned her head and was puzzled by what Aura had just said:

"Aura is a demon... so what?"

"Demons don't have a good reputation."

"Then we'll just show everyone that Aura is a good demon." Frieren's reply was straightforward, delivered with the kind of certainty that only the truly innocent or truly stubborn possess.

"Frieren, you—"

"What?"

"Are so silly."

"I'm very smart."

"Doesn't seem like it."

"I've learned all the magic you taught me."

"..."

'Damn, even though she's an enemy, I have to admit, Frieren is truly a genius!'

'You can learn all the magic of the demons!'

Teaching Frieren the magic of the demon race was probably the thing Aura regretted the most.

By the way, the first thing Aura regretted was that when she was a librarian under Serie, she blacked out the magic theory that promoted human magic, and got caught.

"I'm smart, and Aura is stupid."

"I am indeed an idiot..." Aura muttered, more to herself than to Frieren.

"Uh, Aura, don't say that about yourself."

"But you said it too."

"Only I can say that."

"Why?"

"Because I'm your friend."

"Being your friend is exhausting, Frieren."

"Thank you for your hard work, Aura~"

Frieren squinted, her eyes narrowing into a crescent shape, showing a smug smile.

Sometimes, Aura really felt like punching that face!

Unable to resist, Aura could only be dragged into the elven homeland.

As they neared the village, her apprehension grew, the lush greenery and the ancient trees felt like a closing cage. She was entering a place where she was an outsider, a potential threat. Yet, Frieren's firm grip and steady pace conveyed a trust that Aura couldn't fully grasp.

The so-called elven homeland was less of a village compared to human settlements and rather shabby. It was nestled within a dense forest, surrounded by wilderness, giving it a rustic and untouched appearance.

The area where the elves resided had fewer tree branches and leaves, but those that remained untouched were towering, ancient trees whose tops disappeared into the clouds above. The sunlight was almost completely blocked, with only a few scattered rays making their way through the thick canopy, creating a dappled effect on the forest floor.

It was an eerie place; the perpetual shade and dampness would likely be intolerable for humans, who might suffer from chills and arthritis if they stayed there for too long.

That is to say, the elves' bodies are very durable, so they can live together with these shady trees, mosquitoes, and poisonous weeds in peace.

As they walked along a cobblestone path, they were accompanied by the soft sounds of birds and the subtle fragrance of flowers. They eventually entered a small and exquisitely crafted courtyard.

In the courtyard, a slender but tall-framed female elf was delicately drying books. Despite her delicate appearance, she possessed a stable and vigorous mana, which Aura estimated to be at the level of a second-class mage.

Not all elves are adept at magic. Despite their long lifespans, magic requires talent. Just as some humans can surpass the magical skills of demons in just a hundred years, which the demons have accumulated over millennia, some elves can't learn magic no matter how many thousands of years they live.

This thing is like an elf's breast. No matter how long you live, the parts that should not grow will never grow.

Aura glanced rudely at the tall elf's chest, noting its flatness. Although the elf was much taller than Frieren and had an air of mature elegance, she indeed lacked any significant curves. This observation, while trivial, was a small, fleeting distraction for Aura as she braced herself for the reactions of the elves to her presence.

"Sibele, this is the one who taught me magic!"
