Flames of unity: A dragon riders quest

Chapter 7: Chapter 5: A Threat from the Shadows

The following days passed in a flurry of activity. Adam quickly became an integral part of Berk's dragon-riding community. With Inferno at his side, he trained tirelessly, honing his skills as a rider and fighter. Astrid often joined him during his practice sessions, offering tips and, occasionally, sparring with him. The villagers watched their camaraderie grow, their friendly competition sparking admiration and curiosity.

One afternoon, while Adam and Astrid were returning from a flight along the cliffs, they noticed Hiccup and Toothless standing near the chief's hall, deep in discussion with Stoick and Valka. The urgency in their expressions immediately caught Adam's attention.

"What's going on?" Adam asked as he and Astrid landed nearby.

Hiccup turned to them, his face grim. "There's trouble. One of the fishing villages south of here was attacked. They're saying it wasn't just raiders—it was something bigger, something with dragons."

"Dragons attacking a village?" Astrid frowned. "That doesn't make sense. Unless..."

Valka stepped forward, her voice calm but firm. "Unless someone is controlling them. We've seen this before."

Adam felt a chill run down his spine. "Do we know who's behind it?"

Stoick shook his head. "Not yet. But we need to investigate before it gets closer to Berk."

"I'll go," Adam said without hesitation. "Inferno and I can scout the area."

Astrid crossed her arms. "Not alone, you're not. I'm coming with you."

Hiccup nodded. "We'll need all the help we can get. Astrid, Adam, you two take Inferno and Stormfly to the southern cliffs. Toothless and I will cover the eastern shore."

Valka placed a hand on Adam's shoulder. "Be careful. Whoever is behind this may have more than just dragons at their disposal."

The wind howled as Adam and Astrid soared above the southern cliffs, Inferno and Stormfly gliding effortlessly through the skies. The landscape below was eerily quiet, the usual bustling activity of the fishing village replaced by abandoned boats and empty huts. Smoke rose in thin tendrils from the remnants of burned structures.

"It's like a ghost town," Astrid muttered, her eyes scanning the scene below. "Whatever happened here, it wasn't random."

Inferno let out a low growl, his amber eyes narrowing as he sniffed the air. Adam felt a similar unease. "Something's not right. Stay sharp."

They landed near the village square, the silence almost oppressive. The smell of charred wood and scorched earth lingered in the air. As they dismounted, Astrid drew her axe, and Adam tightened his grip on the sword he had started carrying.

"Do you hear that?" Astrid asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Adam listened carefully. Faintly, he could hear the sound of wings—several pairs—approaching fast. Before he could react, a group of dragons burst from the tree line, their eyes glowing an unnatural shade of green.

Astrid swore under her breath. "They're being controlled."

The dragons circled them, snarling and snapping. Adam stepped closer to Inferno, who growled protectively, flames flickering along his scales. "We can't hurt them—they're not in control of themselves."

"Easier said than done," Astrid said, dodging a blast of fire from a Monstrous Nightmare.

Adam's mind raced. "We need to find the source of the control. If we can break it, they'll stop attacking."

Inferno lunged at a Deadly Nadder, pinning it down without causing harm. Adam placed a hand on the dragon's head, focusing his thoughts. "I know you're scared, but we're here to help. Fight it. Break free."

For a moment, the Nadder struggled, but then the green glow in its eyes flickered and faded. It let out a confused cry before taking off into the sky, free from its torment.

Astrid glanced at Adam, her expression a mix of surprise and admiration. "How did you do that?"

"I don't know," Adam admitted. "It just felt... right."

"Whatever it is, keep doing it," Astrid said, leaping onto Stormfly and taking to the air. "I'll cover you while you free the others."

Working together, Adam and Astrid managed to break the control over the remaining dragons. One by one, the green glow vanished from their eyes, and they retreated into the forest, no longer a threat. As the last dragon disappeared into the distance, Adam and Astrid landed back in the village, both breathing heavily.

"That was incredible," Astrid said, her voice filled with genuine admiration. "I've never seen anyone do what you just did."

Adam shrugged, though he couldn't hide the pride in his smile. "I just wanted to help. They didn't deserve to be used like that."

Astrid placed a hand on his shoulder, her gaze steady. "You've got a gift, Adam. And Berk is lucky to have you."

Before Adam could respond, Inferno let out a sharp roar, his eyes fixed on the treeline. From the shadows, a figure emerged—a cloaked man with a sinister smile and a staff glowing with the same green light that had controlled the dragons.

"Well, well," the man said, his voice dripping with mockery. "Looks like I underestimated you."

Astrid raised her axe, stepping in front of Adam. "Who are you? What do you want?"

The man chuckled. "Who I am is none of your concern. What I want, however, is to see Berk fall. And thanks to you two, I now know who stands in my way."

Adam stepped forward, his voice steady despite the anger burning inside him. "If you think you can threaten Berk and get away with it, you're dead wrong."

The man smirked, his eyes gleaming with malice. "We'll see about that."

With a wave of his staff, he vanished into the shadows, leaving Adam and Astrid alone in the ruined village. The air was thick with tension as they exchanged a glance, both understanding the gravity of what had just happened.

"We need to warn the others," Astrid said, her voice firm.

Adam nodded, mounting Inferno. "This isn't over. Not by a long shot."

Together, they took to the skies, their determination unshaken. Whatever threat lay ahead, they would face it head-on—together.
