Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Benevolent Hidden Emperor
[3rd POV]
The change seemed to happen overnight. The wise and beloved King Gilgamesh suddenly began to act with cruelty.
At first, people thought the wise king was just going through a late rebellious phase. However, as time passed, some began to notice something was wrong.
Gilgamesh's cruelty seemed endless.
He ordered a palace to be built one day, and the next day he gathered gorgeous women to fill his harem and no one knew why he had changed.
Where did the old wise king go?
"Wise King? Fools can only see what's in front of them and fail to glimpse the future."
Gilgamesh, wearing his newly crafted golden armor, stood at the highest point of the palace, looking down at the entire city of Uruk.
The cruelty, savagery, and rage in his eyes... there was not a trace of the wise king to be found.
"This king is no puppet."
Gilgamesh wasn't always like this.
He used to be calm, polite, and kind to others. He would gladly accept advice and would do that would benefit the people of Uruk.
The two-thirds god, one-third human.
This describes Gilgamesh's divine power and wisdom as well as his human lifespan.
A person like this ruling would undoubtedly lead a nation to greatness, and the relationship between humans and gods would become closer than ever before.
This was the fate and duty of Gilgamesh as "Wedge of Heaven."
"To hell with fate."
He carelessly poured the exquisite wine onto the ground without a second thought.
The gods had clearly underestimated Gilgamesh's power.
Gilgamesh's immense strength alone would have been enough, but even more dangerous was his wisdom and the EX-level Clairvoyance he had attained.
The gods' schemes were laid bare in Gilgamesh's eyes, and he was not a man to be manipulated.
Since the gods needed a wise king, he would become a tyrant.
Since the gods wanted to strengthen their connection with humanity, he would go and destroy their temples.
"I don't need the gods' epics, I don't need songs for the gods, and I don't need temples built for those trash. This world only needs Gilgamesh's epic, and the people should sing my praises. The statue of the King is nobler than that of the gods."
Gilgamesh intended to crush the gods who tried to control his fate and turn that predetermined fate into dust.
He could not care less about explaining his own actions. He had indeed satisfied his own desires, so why pretend otherwise?
In addition to dealing with those who refused to obey him, he wanted the people to give him every treasure that would be useful.
He wouldn't spare those who refused to obey him, no matter who they were.
"This is my way. This is my path."
Gilgamesh understood that there would inevitably be those who wouldn't agree with him, but with his overwhelming power and wisdom, how could he possibly be "wrong"?
"As long as this power and wisdom remain, as long as those rebels tremble in fear, what mistake has the king made?"
Even if he were wrong, it would be the world's fault, the fools' fault, the weaklings' fault.
"If it weren't for my wisdom and power, the people of Uruk would still be suffering under the control of beasts and magical creatures. So, anyone who doesn't want to die or live in misery must love, respect, and worship me."
Loyalty to the king… Gilgamesh.
The king's arrogant words caused thunder to roar in the heavens, but not a single god came to punish this arrogant fool.
The gods understood just how powerful Gilgamesh had become, but the high priestess Siduri, standing by, could only feel helpless.
She was a close assistant to Gilgamesh and knew better than anyone he knew was not like this.
The current Gilgamesh was rebelling just for the sake of revolution, fighting just for the sake of fighting. Even though it hurt the people he once cared for, he still chose the wrong path.
The pride of the king made him unwilling to be controlled by the gods, but was this truly the right path?
"King, when you impose cruelty upon the people, one day, this very power will turn against you. Will you still be able to stand firm when that happens?"
Siduri understood that the people's rebellion would come eventually, but could anyone truly stand against Gilgamesh?
This invincible heroic king.
...
Ur City
[You watch as the soldiers of Uruk oppress the people, and you hear the cries of the people, but it has nothing to do with you.]
It truly had nothing to do with him.
Kyouya watched as the soldiers, ignoring a mother's screams, forcibly took her daughter to be added to Gilgamesh's harem.
In fact, he could somewhat guess the reason behind Gilgamesh's drastic change.
The "Wedge of Heaven" plan must have been exposed.
He had heard enough of Gilgamesh's pride in these recent days and realized that this person possessed EX Clairvoyance and there could be no secrets against someone like that.
The gods understood this as well.
After realizing that Gilgamesh had EX-level clairvoyance, they began preparing the counterfeit known as "Shadow."
Gilgamesh's tyranny caused him to lose the power of Wedge of Heavemm, indicating the Age of Gods would inevitably come to an end, and the gods would no longer be able to remain on Earth or interfere with the fate of humanity.
Humanity would have to govern itself.
Looking to the future, this was indeed a good thing. Since it was a good thing, there was no need to stop it.
Kyouya stood up to leave.
He had no intention of fighting with Gilgamesh. He also didn't like being controlled by fate and was very similar to Gilgamesh in some ways, but…
"Please, spare my daughter. The king took one not long ago... and it's only been half a month…"
A mother's desperate cries pierced his ears, but he didn't care.
It had nothing to do with him.
"The woman was getting boring to the king, and now it's time to change for a new one. Sending your daughter to the king's favor is a blessing for your family."
Hearing the soldier's response, the mother cried even more painfully.
A beautiful young woman barely lasted half a month as Gilgamesh's interest and what would happen to her daughter?
Kyouya ignored this.
He then saw the laborers being forced to work and heard reports of many who had already died from exhaustion while building Gilgamesh's palace.
It was essentially a death sentence to be forced into labor but none of this had anything to do with him.
The cries, the sobs, the resentment, the helplessness... Kyouya walked out of the city.
These things clearly had nothing to do with him, but why did they still bother him?
"Ereshkigal, you told me I should choose my own path, right?"
Just as Kyouya was about to leave the city, he looked up at the sky and muttered to himself.
Of course, no one answered him, but his heart had already provided him with the answer.
"I am a selfish person."
He had made his conclusion, and there was no questioning it. He was willing to go against the world for those he cared about.
But in this life, Ereshkigal didn't need his protection. He only needed to take care of himself.
The oppressed people had nothing to do with him. He could have ignored them, but those sounds kept reaching his ears, making him irritated and restless...
"I don't want to hear these sounds."
He reached out and snatched the spear from the hands of the city guards, ignoring everyone's gaze as he walked toward the source of the cries.
The streets were filled with cries of despair, and the city was stained with blood—all for a single thought: to save the people.
[You followed your heart and walked your own path. Your true destiny begins to unfold.]
"The Benevolent Hidden Emperor... awakened."
To be continued...
