Chapter 41: Chapter 41: So Close?
This was undoubtedly good news! Another Stonefall Spell descended, forcing the Fire Feather Eagle to retreat again. Rhett noticed a faint glow of fire and fighting spirit flickering from the crevice between some rocks in the distance. His eyes gleamed with realization, his rich battle experience telling him that the opportunity had arrived.
Moreover, he had already set things in motion, and now he could make full use of them.
The female eagle in the sky flapped her wings and looked down at the ground, finally getting a chance to catch her breath. A moment ago, the falling stones felt like a relentless hammer, treating her like a target in a cruel game. Looking at the humans below, a flicker of fear appeared in her eyes. Fear led to thoughts of escape, but she didn't want to flee alone.
She glanced toward the pile of rocks where the male eagle had flown. He was far away, fighting another human and no longer near the Red Flame Tree. Only now did she turn her attention back to the tree.
What she saw made her panic.
A "small insect" was slowly approaching the Red Flame Tree, clearly one of the humans' accomplices. With a sharp cry, the female eagle dived towards the other side of the mountain, her eyes glowing red as she aimed to crush the despicable human trying to harm her offspring.
"Humph!" Rhett, seeing this, went all out, chasing after her. His expression was focused, yet there was a trace of tension as he prepared to take down the beast heading toward his son.
By restricting the eagle's movements, Rhett had managed to position himself at the foot of the mountain. From here, he had a clear view of the eastern and western slopes of the small mountain where the Red Flame Tree stood, as well as the eastern slope where the apprentice knights were stationed. Garret had moved to the northern side of the hill where the knights were hiding, positioning himself amidst a pile of rocks at mid-slope. Meanwhile, Reilly had stealthily approached the back side of the Red Flame Tree.
The shift in the battlefield had caught Tucker's attention. He realized something was wrong just as a scream echoed through the air.
"Reilly! Where's Reilly?" The voice belonged to Klina. She frantically scanned the area, her voice trembling in panic. Tucker was equally bewildered, staring at the empty spot where Reilly had been standing. How had he disappeared so suddenly?
Even the other knights were taken aback, their formation breaking as they prepared to search for him.
However, Curls remained calm and said, "Everyone, don't panic, and don't scatter. Let's wait for the lord and the others to finish fighting the Fire Feather Eagles before searching for Master Reilly. Perhaps he has another plan in mind?"
His words helped settle the group. They nodded in agreement, realizing that with the battle still ongoing, there was no immediate danger nearby. If Reilly had wandered off, as long as he avoided the eagles, he should be safe.
But as they refocused on the battlefield, they were shocked to find that the eagles had disappeared, along with their lords, who had moved out of sight.
On the other side of the mountain...
The female eagle, now a streak of red light, dove down from the mountain peak, her wings trailing a long, fiery glow. Rhett squinted, seeing his chance!
The Earth Spikes, which had been useless until now, could finally come into play. Rhett focused on the eagle's flight path, predicting where she would strike, and a cold smile crept across his face. With a surge of spiritual energy, a mystical pattern formed, and a long spike shot up from the mountainside.
The spike, glowing with a faint yellow aura, seemed to predict the eagle's exact path. As the female eagle passed overhead, the spike aimed straight for her throat.
Distracted by hatred and anger, the eagle was a fraction too slow to react. She managed to twist her neck just in time, narrowly avoiding the spike. But in that split second, a follow-up Earth Drill Spell pierced her back.
Despite sensing the danger, the eagle's body couldn't keep up. The combined assault from the front and back proved too much. The sharp yellow spike pierced her flesh, pinning her to the mountainside.
Blood stained the gray rocks as a pitiful screech echoed through the sky. The eagle struggled in vain, her thrashing only causing more blood to flow, staining her bright red feathers a gruesome shade.
"Reilly, Water Arrow Spell!" Rhett called out, sensing the critical moment.
Without wasting time on a verbal response, Reilly, who had just reached the mountain, took a deep breath and swung his small magic wand in front of him.
Water Arrow Spell!
A sharp water arrow shot through the air, striking the eagle's head.
The eagle wobbled, collapsing to the ground. Though still alive, her eyes pleaded for mercy, swaying as if begging to be spared.
Reilly took another deep breath and followed up with a second Water Arrow Spell, again targeting the eagle's head.
With a sickening crack, the small skull split open, spilling red and white matter. The eagle was finally, undeniably dead.
Reilly exhaled in relief. Despite being a Tier 2 magical beast, without the ability to defend herself, the eagle proved to be fragile.
The fierce opponent, who had fought for so long, now lay lifeless at his feet. Rhett remained emotionless, his resolve unshaken. Mercy had no place in a battle for survival.
Before this, how many humans had the Fire Feather Eagles killed? Only days ago, they had feasted on the people of Dam Town. Mercy? What a joke.
Rhett turned to Reilly. "Your Water Arrow Spell still has room for improvement. A shot to the eye would have ended it with the first strike, even if it's a Tier 2 magical beast."
Reilly sighed but nodded in acknowledgment. "Yes, father. I'll continue practicing."
Rhett's eyes softened as he placed a hand on Reilly's shoulder. "When we return, I'll personally train you in spellcasting."
Their gazes met, and Reilly nodded firmly. "Yes, father."
A delayed notification appeared in Rhett's mind:
Family member has slain an enemy above their level. Destiny Points +1.
Rhett exhaled slowly. Finally, there was some gain, even if it was just a single point. It was a good start.
With 54 Destiny Points now accumulated, Rhett recalled Garret's situation. The other eagle was still out there. Although the simulation had predicted one death and one injury, he led Reilly over the hill to Garret's location, determined to ensure the fight ended as expected.
