Chapter 9: 005
"This tree hole... leaving it as it is would be troublesome."
After casually destroying the witch, Rod turned his gaze toward the tree hole behind him. It was the entrance to the treasure vault, a passage that wasn't originally there, somehow dug up by someone unknown.
Now, the treasure vault was his private property. Even if a single coin were stolen, it would be his loss.
"Guess I'll just destroy it."
Rod raised his right hand. The power of the sun flowed continuously into his fingertips. A massive orange fireball, over a hundred meters in diameter, formed and hovered above his palm.
The terrifying heat distorted the air around it.
"The merciless sun!"
Boom!
The miniature sun slowly rose, then dropped!
With a thunderous explosion, a blazing inferno engulfed the area.
The entire mound, along with the trees and the tunnel, was obliterated. Everything vanished in the wake of the blast.
"That should do it."
Rod dusted off his hands. The ground, now molten and solidified, had hardened into a substance tougher than concrete.
Even if someone knew the vault was underneath, it would take a long time to dig through. Besides, the three guardian hounds remained on watch.
These dogs had survived a direct attack from him and lived, marking them as formidable magical creatures.
Even if someone somehow stumbled upon the entrance, they wouldn't make it past the guardians.
"I think I'm lost..."
Rod glanced at the crumpled map in his hand, then at the endless forest before him.
According to the map, there should have been a small grove ahead. Beyond that lay Mushroom Town.
'So where did this vast forest come from?'
"It's impossible for me to be lost. Hmph, the map must be wrong."
Rod pulled his coat tighter around him. The forest was bitterly cold at night. Without the power of the sun coursing through him, how could a regular person withstand it?
"This forsaken place, not even a bird in sight, let alone people."
Rod muttered to himself.
Just then, a glimmer of light appeared in the distance. His mood lifted slightly.
"Who'd have thought I'd find someone in this remote, desolate place?"
Cautiously, he approached the firelight.
As he neared, the sight before him made him pause.
Around a bonfire sat several massive figures, each over three meters tall, roasting something over the flames. Their enormous bodies were grotesque, with fat limbs and ugly features. Two sharp fangs jutted from their lower jaws, and their dull eyes gave them a vacant, slow-witted look.
Skewered on sharp sticks were human arms and legs, roasting over the fire.
"Ogres!"
Ogres were a type of low-level magical creature in this world. Though incredibly strong, they were dim-witted and violent, often living in groups. Their favorite prey was the weak, especially humans.
The ogres devoured the half-cooked flesh with great delight.
Nearby, several large iron cages were hanging from the trees. Inside, a few terrified humans huddled together,
Roar!
The ogres, still feasting on human limbs, immediately jumped to their feet. Their eyes turned savage as they glared at Rod.
Rod casually held...
