Fairy Tail: Metal and Threads

Chapter 24: The First Quest; Part 1

Earth Land, Ishgar, Kingdom of Fiore, Magnolia.

May 8, x774.

On their ninth birthday, Alfonzo and Elicia were given permission to take their first D-Class jobs. To everyone in Fairy Tail's, except Cana, Laki, and Alzack's, surprise, they both chose different quests.

Since the two were almost inseparable, all the older members of Fairy Tail had expected them to take a quest together. But...

"We have to be able to act independently." Alfonzo said when Makarov asked why they chose different jobs.

After hearing that explanation, Makarov called two of the more senior guild members.

"Wakaba, Reedus, I want the two of you to go with Alfonzo and Elicia on their first jobs!" Makarov shouted across the guild.

"Sure thing, Master!" Wakaba shouted back in return.

"As you wish, Master." Reedus replied calmly while he continued to paint.

"Now, you two should get everything you need to complete these quests successfully." Makarov said in a grandfatherly tone.

"Yes, Gramps." Alfonzo and Elicia replied simultaneously.

After that, the two children left the guild and returned to their dorm rooms. Then, they changed into the clothing that Elicia had made for them. In Fairy Hills, Elicia changed into a sleeveless baby blue shirt, a pink skirt, a grey belt, and a pair of shoes that matched the belt.

Meanwhile, Alfonzo changed into a white t-shirt, a black button down vest that he left open, a black pair of pants, a blue sash tied around his waist, and a pair of shoes that looked a lot like the Space Jam Jordan XI's. He also had a thin metal strip wrapped around each arm like a Muay Thai fighter.

About half an hour later, both Alfonzo and Elicia were back at the guild hall. Standing in front of them were Wakaba and Reedus, respectively.

"Ready to go, Kiddo?" Wakaba asked as he took a drag from the cigarette in his right hand.

"Yeah, I'm good to go." Alfonzo replied.

At the same time, Reedus addressed Elicia.

"Shall we go, Elicia?" Reedus asked.

"Yeah, let's go! Let's go!" Elicia answered excitedly.

With that, both duos started walking toward the center of Magnolia. As they walked, they chatted casually. Then, when they reached the central plaza, they stopped walking.

"Good luck, Fonzie." Elicia said with a smile as she hugged Alfonzo. "Be careful while you're out there, okay?"

"I will, Lici. You be careful, too." Alfonzo said with a smile. "And good luck to you, too."

"Thanks!" Elicia replied energetically.

Meanwhile, Wakaba and Reedus stood a little ways away.

"Those two are precious." Wakaba commented.

"They are." Reedus replied. "Watching them together is quite heartwarming."

"But when Alfonzo gets older, he's gonna be a heartbreaker, I think>" Wakaba said.

"Yes, he already has the attention of both Elicia and Cana." Reedus agreed. "I just hope that their friendship isn't ruined."

"He'll have to worry about Gildarts when he comes back, too." Wakaba said in a tone filled with pity.

Then, both Wakaba and Reedus shuddered slightly when they thought of Gildarts in doting daddy mode. Shaking their heads to rid themselves of those thoughts, they were just in time to see Alfonzo and Elicia end their farewells.

After that, the two groups separated. While Elicia and Reedus entered one of the buildings situated on the central plaza, namely the town hall, Alfonzo and Wakaba walked toward the west. Then, after about five minutes, they entered the Rabbit's Foot restaurant.

The reason they entered these establishments was so that they could discuss the jobs with the clients. Although it was possible to complete the quests without consulting the clients, it was a good idea to do so. For example, they may know some information that was not posted on the request sheet. The request sheets are only so big, after all.

This time, however, neither of them learned anything that was not posted on the request sheet. So, they left the buildings where they met their clients.

Alfonzo and Wakaba were the first ones to finish meeting with their client. Then, after leaving the restaurant, they headed back to the central plaza. After that, they headed to the south gate of the town.

About ten minutes later, Alfonzo and Wakaba walked through the town gates. Then, they began to jog toward the woods to the south. And after another ten minutes, they were standing in front of the wooded area.

"Alright, Kiddo, from here on it's all up to you." Wakaba said, about to light up a cigarette.

Before he could light it up, however, Alfonzo snatched it from his hand.

"What's the big idea, Alfonzo?" Wakaba asked in a combination of confusion and annoyance.

"I'm hunting magical beasts." Alfonzo replied while rolling his eyes. "Do you think there are any magical beasts around here that won't be alerted by the smell of smoke. On top of that, these are horned rabbits. They're supposed to be really skittish, right?'"

"Haha... Sorry, Kid." Wakaba replied, scratching his head in embarrassment. "I'm used to fighting magical beasts that wouldn't be bothered by the smell of my cigarettes."

Rolling his eyes once again, Alfonzo turned his back on Wakaba. Then, he began to walk through the woods carefully Making sure not to step on any fallen branches, Alfonzo began searching the woods for any signs of the horned rabbits.

Unfortunately, these small magical creatures don't leave much in the way of tracks. They're so light that they barely cause any changes in the underbrush. Because of this, Alfonzo spent the next hour with out any luck finding his targets.

"Damn it." Alfonzo muttered. "This is so fucking annoying. How am I supposed to know where to look."

"From what Master says, your mother had a potty mouth a lot like you do." Wakaba said with a snicker. "Did you pick that up from her? Oops.... Sorry, didn't mean to bring that up."

"Don't worry about it." Alfonzo said. Then, he closed his eyes. "As long as I don't see those Zeref cultists that killed her and my dad, I'm fine."

A moment later, Wakaba felt a pulse of magical power originating from Alfonzo. Though he had seen him training over the last three years, he was still dumbfounded by how dense his magic power felt.

'This kid is a monster.' Wakaba thought. 'He only has about as much magic power as an average C-Class wizard. But his magic power is so thick.'

Meanwhile, Alfonzo was trying something he had thought of a while ago. In a lot of anime, manga, and fan fics, characters used their magic power, or whatever energy they used in the world, to search their surroundings by spreading it thinly across their surroundings.

At first, Alfonzo tried spreading his magic power in a hemispherical shape. However, he could only stretch it for 50 feet (approx. 15 m) in all directions. With the woods having a circumference of at least 656 feet (approx. 200 m), his sensing range was far from enough to scan the entire wooded area.

I need to think of something else.' Alfonzo thought to himself. "I don't need to search the air for horned rabbits. So maybe if I only spread my magic power on the ground, I should be able to cover more distance.'

Like that, Alfonzo retracted his magic power back into his body. However, before he could make his next attempt, Wakaba asked him a question.

"Hey, Kid, what did you just do?" Wakaba asked curiously. "I just felt your magic power wash over me and flood the surroundings."

Alfonzo then proceeded to explain his theory about using his magic power to search his surroundings. Hearing the explanation, Wakaba was surprised. He had never thought of using his magic power to search like that. In fact, most wizards, unless they had some kind of search magic, searched the old fashion way.

"I'd love to open up that head of yours and see how your brain works, Kiddo." Wakaba said with a smile.

"You're not the first to say that to me." Alfonzo muttered as he closed his eyes again.

Spreading his magic power outward once again, Alfonzo restricted the height to no higher than his own height. Unsurprisingly, he was able to stretch his magic power much further than before. However, as the distance grew, so too did the sensitivity drop. Luckily, he could perfectly grasp everything on the ground of the woods.

"Found them." Alfonzo muttered. Then after a few more seconds, he continued. "Looks like there are forty-seven of them."

"Damn, that's convenient." Wakaba said enviously. "I would have completed this job so much faster if I could do that back then."

Not paying attention to Wakaba's grumbling, Alfonzo began walking in the direction of the horned rabbits he sensed. Naturally, Wakaba, as his observer, followed him. After about five minutes, Alfonzo and Wakaba arrived at a spot where they could see the whole group of horned rabbits. And to neither of the two's surprise, the horned rabbits were fucking like... well... rabbits.

"Kinda feels bad to interrupt them while they're in the mood." Wakaba muttered.

Although he agreed with the sentiment, Alfonzo did not comment on it. He was only nine, so he was not supposed to know about the birds and the bees, yet.

"I'll finish it in one go." Alfonzo muttered.

A moment later, a massive magic circle appeared behind Alfonzo. Then, twenty-four small lumps of iron materialized with the help of his magic. At the same time, Wakaba took some distance, allowing Alfonzo to handle this on his own. Yet he was close enough to step in if necessary.

"Metal Magic: Shuriken Rain]." Alfonzo muttered, chanting the name of his spell.

Then, the lumps of metal began molding themselves into shuriken like you would see in any form of media containing ninjas. A moment later, they began to spin at high speed. Then, Alfonzo pointed his right arm at the horned rabbits and the shuriken shot forward.

Out of the twenty-four shuriken Alfonzo fired, nineteen of them hit their mark. Targeting the side of the horned rabbit's necks, the ones that were hit died near instantly. However, there were five horned rabbits that were alerted by the sound of the shuriken cutting through the air. Then, they evaded by hopping away. Unfortunately, their mates were not so lucky.

While the horned rabbits that were not targeted quickly ran away, the five that avoided death were angered greatly by the deaths of their mates. So, after determining where the shuriken came from, they charged in that direction.

"Damn, some of them dodged." Alfonzo muttered.

As he spoke, Alfonzo made eye contact with one of the irate horned rabbits. Then, it made a remarkably cute sound before charging in Alfonzo's direction. Naturally, the other horned rabbits followed along.

In the meantime, Alfonzo positioned himself with his back to a tree, making sure that he was under a branch that he assumed could handle his weight. Then, he waited for the horned rabbits to arrive.

A few moments later, the horned rabbits were close enough to see the fury in their eyes. And when they were that close, they did not waste any time throwing themselves at Alfonzo horn first.

"[Metal Magic: Spring Bounce]." Alfonzo said, as springs were created under his feet.

Once the springs were created, Alfonzo jumped straight up, grabbing the branch above him.

*Thud!* *Thud!* *Thud!*

AS Alfonzo jumped when the horned rabbits were airborne, none of them could stop their forward momentum. So, three of the five horned rabbits ended up stuck in the tree, hanging by their horns. The other two, on the other hand, soared past the tree, since they were aiming at Alfonzo from a wider angle.

"Wow, I thought at least one would get killed by friendly fire." Alfonzo muttered as he held on to the branch.

Before letting go of the tree branch, Alfonzo used [Shuriken Rain] again, killing the three horned rabbits stuck int eh tree's trunk. Then, so as not to damage the prey he hunted, Alfonzo kicked off the tree trunk and landed away from the tree.

As soon as he landed, however, the two surviving horned rabbits dashed at him again. And like before, they both leapt forth with their horns pointed at his torso. However, since there were only two attacking this time, Alfonzo had no need for tricks.

With his arms crossed in front of his chest, Alfonzo waited for the horned rabbits to draw near. Then, just as they struck his metal wrapped forearms, Alfonzo deflected their horns upward with one quick and forceful movement. When the rabbits horns were pointed upward, Alfonzo quickly moved his hands and grabbed both horned rabbits around their necks.

*Crack!* *Crack!*

Then, with one strong squeeze from each hand, Alfonzo broke both horned rabbits' necks.

"And that should do it." Alfonzo said, dropping the two horned rabbits. "But how am I gonna bring all these horned rabbits back to magnolia?"
