Chapter 36: Ch 36 : Mira's Confession
Makarov and Noel slowly descended to the ground, looking at the guild before them, which had been devastated beyond recognition in the recent battle.
Makarov let out a deep sigh. "It's really been destroyed quite severely."
"T-That… Master," Lucy suddenly walked over and called out to Makarov.
"Hm?" Makarov turned his head, his kind gaze scanning Lucy's injuries before he spoke. "You've suffered quite a lot as well."
"Don't show such a sad expression, Lucy," Noel said softly.
"Huh?" Lucy looked at Noel in surprise.
Noel smiled gently. "It's okay now, isn't it? Everything's already been resolved. And if the guild is destroyed, we'll just rebuild it. As long as all the guild members are safe, that's all that matters."
"Noel, I…" Lucy stood there, unable to find the words to respond.
"That's right, Lu-chan!" A lively female voice suddenly reached Lucy's ears.
The familiar voice made Lucy turn her head hurriedly.
Standing before her was the Shadow Gear team, their bodies wrapped in bandages and covered in medicine, but their spirits still looking rather upbeat.
The one speaking was Levy, smiling warmly at the center.
"No, it's because of me that…"
"We already heard everything, but no one thinks it's your fault, Lu-chan," Levy comforted her gently.
"Lucy," Noel's face turned serious as he looked at her intently and said, "Happiness and sadness… While we may not be able to share everything, we can share a great deal. That's what a guild is. One person's happiness is everyone's happiness. One person's anger is everyone's anger. And one person's tears… are everyone's tears. There's no need to blame yourself, Lucy."
Noel's lips curled into a gentle smile as he watched Lucy, who had covered her face with her hands. "Hasn't everyone's feelings already reached you? Lift your head—you are a member of Fairy Tail."
Tears streamed down Lucy's cheeks, falling to the ground one by one.
Finally, she couldn't hold back any longer and broke into sobs.
"But speaking of which… we really went overboard this time. The Magic Council is definitely going to be furious. No, wait—there's even a chance we might get locked up!"
Makarov, who had been calm up until now, suddenly pictured the Council members with darkened faces filled with anger.
Cold sweat began dripping down his face, and then, with a wail, he clung onto Noel's leg, crying with a mix of tears and snot. "Noel, you have to testify for me! This battle wasn't our fault at all! If you don't help me, the Council will really throw me in jail! Look at me—I'm just an old man with brittle bones…"
Noel looked down at Makarov clinging to his leg, his face filled with black lines.
Finally, he sighed and tried to console him. "It's fine, Master. This time, Phantom Lord was the one who provoked us first. Even if someone gets arrested, it'll be Joseph, not you."
"Really?" Makarov's expression immediately changed, lighting up like a drowning man who had suddenly grabbed onto a life-saving straw.
"Yes, really," Noel repeated helplessly.
"Bad news! Master, bad news!"
Just as Noel and Makarov were talking, a guild member rushed in, bringing a nightmare of an announcement. "The Magic Council's army—the Rune Knights—are here!"
"Damn it."
"They already found out?"
The moment they heard the news, panic spread among the guild members.
Some, like Natsu, immediately attempted to flee, but before they could even take a step, they were completely surrounded by the Rune Knights.
Soon, in order to investigate the details of the incident, the members of Fairy Tail were taken into separate tents one by one.
"Name?" The captain of the Rune Knights held a pen, ready to take notes.
"Noel Rutherford."
"Gender?"
"…Male," Noel answered speechlessly.
"I'm asking you, what was the cause of the war between Phantom Lord and Fairy Tail?" The captain questioned seriously.
"You should ask Phantom Lord that. Fairy Tail was forced into this battle." Noel didn't even bother to look up as he answered indifferently.
"Take this seriously!" The captain slammed his hand on the table before continuing, "Who defeated the Four Elements and Phantom Lord's guild master?"
"…Who knows?" Noel turned his head to the side guiltily. "Maybe they had a change of heart and started fighting among themselves."
"You—you…!" The captain's finger trembled as he pointed at Noel, too stunned to speak.
Phantom Lord turning on each other?
That was the most shameless excuse he had ever heard.
If you're going to make up a reason, at least make it a believable one!
--------------
"Finally, it's over," Noel said as he stepped out of the tent, stretching lazily.
The two to three hours of interrogation had completely drained what little energy he had left after his battle with Joseph.
Now, Noel felt utterly exhausted—both physically and mentally.
All he wanted was to go back and get a good night's sleep to recover from the fatigue.
"Noel…"
A soft voice suddenly reached his ears.
"Hm?" Noel looked up and saw Mira standing not far away. "Mira? What's wrong?"
Mira slowly walked over to him. "Noel, can we talk?"
"Uh… Yeah, of course."
--------------
In a quiet park in Magnolia, Noel looked at Mira with confusion.
Ever since their battle with Phantom Lord, she had been acting strangely.
"Is something wrong, Mira?" he asked.
"Noel, how long have we known each other?" Mira suddenly spoke, her back facing him.
"If we count from when you joined Fairy Tail, it's been about six years," Noel replied, though he couldn't hide the doubt in his heart.
"Six years… Then, Noel, how many years has it been since you sealed my memories?"
Noel's body froze instantly at her words.
He could only stare at the figure standing before him in silence.
"Noel…" Mira turned around, looking at him with tears streaming down her delicate face. "Why… Why did you keep it from me? Why didn't you blame me? I… I hurt you so badly… If I hadn't seen Elfman use Full-Body Takeover today and suddenly recovered my memories, I… I…!"
She couldn't finish her sentence before throwing herself into Noel's arms, her body trembling as she sobbed, her tears soaking into his chest.
Noel waited until her emotions gradually calmed down and her sobbing subsided.
Then, he looked at the girl in his arms and let out a soft sigh.
His eyes carried both apology and warmth as he gently wiped away the tears on Mira's cheeks.
No longer avoiding her gaze, he met her clear, sorrowful eyes and spoke,
"It's exactly because I knew you would react this way that I didn't want you to remember. I… I'm selfish, Mira. Because I never want to see the people who are important to me get hurt again."
"Noel…" Mira gazed at him blankly, as the pain and sorrow in his eyes slowly spread through her heart.
"I... once failed to protect the most important person to me. Back then... I had already lost everything," Noel murmured, his voice tinged with sorrow. "So when I joined Fairy Tail, I made a vow—no matter what happens, I never want to see the people who are important to me shed tears of sadness again. So… Mira, please, don't cry anymore, okay?"
He gazed into Mira's eyes with a look of deep apology.
"…Mm," After a moment of silence, Mira wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and once again put on the same bright smile as before. "Noel, I won't lose to Erza. Never."
"Huh? What?" Noel asked in confusion. "Mira, didn't you stop competing with Erza after you lost your magic two years ago?"
"That's… different," Mira sighed softly, then secretly complained in her heart about a certain emotionally dense fool before continuing, "Anyway, there's one thing I will never lose in. Never."
"Eh? What thing?"
"That's a secret," Mira said mischievously, a sly glint flashing in her eyes.
