Chapter 14: Chapter 13: Learning
As soon as they left the office, silence fell over the hall.
"What kind of sleepy kingdom is this?" Makarov shouted, slamming his fist on the table.
"Master, what's w…" Macao asked, looking toward Eros.
"It only seems the same," the master answered, his voice filled with boredom. At that moment, everyone in the hall sighed with relief.
"Yes, the existence of two such monsters is unnatural," one of the guild mages commented, sounding relieved.
"That's true, but imagine if there really were two such people?" another mage joked, only to be punched in the jaw by a third. "HEY! WHAT FOR?!" he yelled angrily, jumping up.
"DON'T JOKE LIKE THAT! OR YOU'LL JINX US!"
"FUCK YOU!"
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
"KILL HIM, GUYS!" And just like that, pure anarchy erupted in the guild.
"Aren't you going to separate them?" Eros asked Makarov, his right eye twitching.
"Eh, punks," Makarov said with a smile, "Let them have their fun."
'What kind of fun are they having?' the titan thought, dodging a body flying past him. 'That was close.'
"Don't you want to join in?"
"I think I'll abstain," Eros replied, sitting down at the bar.
"But your friends are all for it." Turning around, the titan saw Roni and Rick kicking some poor guy. The next moment, another magician hit the older magician, who didn't lose his composure and fought back, while Rick headbutted one of the magicians in the most painful place…
"It probably hurts," Eros said, grimacing.
"Yeah…" Makarov answered, mirroring the titan's actions as he caught one of the flying bodies and tossed it back.
"THANK YOU, MASTER! I'M BACK…" But before the mage could finish, he received a kick to the face and fell unconscious.
"It's fun here."
"Of course! Have you already decided to join the guild?"
"Forgive me, master, but my decision cannot be changed."
"Too bad."
"Since you have nothing to do now, maybe you could show me the library…"
The sight that greeted Eros horrified him. There were dozens of shelves, each twelve meters high, overflowing with books on every topic imaginable.
"Yes, even ten years wouldn't be enough for me to reread everything here. It would take dozens more…"
"Well, here's a reason to join the guild…" Makarov teased, but the titan, enchanted by the sight, didn't pay attention.
"Master, is there an item that can help you read faster or…" A pair of ordinary red glasses with small wings appeared in front of Eros.
"These are hurricane reading glasses," Makarov said, handing them to the titan. "They will allow you to read books at a speed eighteen times faster than usual."
"If my father had such glasses, he would definitely be happy…" A brief sadness appeared on Eros's face.
"Your father, huh? Who was he?"
"He was a great scientist, and also the best father," Eros said, closing his eyes. "Even when he was very busy, he always found time to play with us. For him, family was always above all, even after my brother…" Eros suddenly fell silent, realizing he had said too much.
"And where are they now?"
"They died."
"So that's how it is…" Makarov approached Eros, and what happened next shocked him. Makarov hugged the titan. "I'm sorry for making you remember this," Makarov said with sadness in his voice.
"What do you mean? It's alright," Eros answered with a soft smile. "I've already resigned myself. I want to live a happy life, so that my parents, who look down on me from heaven, will be proud of me."
"I'm sure they'd be happy to hear these words," Makarov said, stroking Eros's head. "You can spend as much time as you want. No one will bother you. You don't have to worry."
"Thank you, master."
"Okay, have fun, but be careful not to spoil the artifact."
"Got it!" As soon as Makarov left, Eros grabbed the first book he found, quickly flipping through it before putting it back.
"This will take a long time," Eros muttered, grabbing another. "Guide to the Magical World," but that wasn't the one either. He looked at all the books again. "I feel like it's not going to be easy to find the topics I need."
Taking off his glasses, he twirled them in his hand. "But these glasses are really magical. Just flipping through the book, I already understand its main essence." A gleam appeared in the titan's eyes. "Are there any glasses with a higher speed?"
The fight from earlier was already over, and everyone was sitting at the tables, drinking and chatting. At that moment, Eros rushed out of the library.
"Master, you lost," Macao exclaimed with a grin, holding out his hand.
"What are you talking about?" the old man chuckled. "Eros, where are you going?"
"To the magic shop. I want to confirm something," Eros answered quickly, leaving the guild.
"He flew out like a scalded cat," said one of the guild members, "which means he's already read up to his neck, and those rows of books are really hyping things up." The others nodded in agreement. "But that doesn't mean he won't come back. When he does, we'll find out who wins!"
"Okay…"
Eros entered the first magic shop he found and immediately began examining the goods.
"Young man, can I help you with something?" the plump seller asked politely.
"Yes, do you sell hurricane reading glasses?"
"Sure, take a look here." The seller pointed to several pairs of glasses, each a different color, with prices increasing in order. "With these, you can read books two times faster. The next pair reads four times faster, and so on, up to sixty-four times. But…"
"Is there something wrong with the product?" Eros asked.
"Oh no," the seller replied, shaking his head. "I just wouldn't recommend buying glasses that read at sixty-four times the speed or higher."
"Why?" Eros asked in surprise.
"You are too young for them, and they will greatly burden your brain, to the point that you could lose your mind from an excess of information," he said with concern. Eros looked at them thoughtfully. No, he wasn't afraid of this, because his brain was not like that of ordinary people, so he could easily withstand such a load. He was interested in something else—whether there were glasses with an even greater speed.
He asked the seller about this. The seller looked at him as though he were crazy, but answered.
"Yes, there are, but they are not sold, since they are prohibited due to the fact that they can drive even S-rank mages crazy."
"I understand, thank you!"
Twenty minutes later, Eros ran into the guild.
"Find what you wanted?" asked Makarov.
"Yes, please do not bother me with trifles for the next couple of hours!" Having shouted this, he locked himself in the library.
"What did I say, Macao?" the old man grinned, taking the bag of precious stones from the guy's hands. "There's no point in arguing with your master!"
"Macao, did you win easy money?" Mockingly in his voice, Wakaba teased his friend.
"Shut up!" he shouted angrily, drinking a mug of beer in one gulp. The hall, seeing all this, burst into loud laughter, embarrassing Macao.
"First, I need to figure out what runes or enchantments are on them, and then think about how to reproduce..." Eros began to quickly look through the books, sorting through them and putting them into different piles. Now, Eros's priority was to find books on dark magic, rituals and runes, artifacts and their creation methods, as well as biology, geography, and history.
The spread was large. It would be difficult to cope with this in a year, but using hurricane reading glasses, it should become much easier. However, 32 times faster speed would not be enough. He needed at least 64, or even 128. It took Eros almost a day to choose the right books.
At the moment, several dozen stacks of books lay on the floor, divided into different topics, ranging from basics like "History of the World of Magic" to "Divine Enchantments."
He was going to study each of these topics from A to Z and also use all of this in practice. But Eros understood that this was almost impossible, so the main direction he chose was "Artefactorics," that is, the creation of artifacts, and therefore, there were a couple of stacks of books more in this direction.
Two weeks passed while studying the books. For Eros, they passed by unnoticed. During this time, he left the library only to have a snack—but only for the first week—and to ask Makarov a couple of questions on incomprehensible topics, one of them being "Analyzing Magic," which he studied.
It was in one of the books. Of course, the description there was very poor, but it was enough to understand all its advantages. One of which was a complete analysis of any object, its quality, composition, and even what runes and enchantments were applied to the object.
So, he was able to fully understand the hurricane reading glasses. The glasses were made of White Crystal, as well as advanced runes that accelerated thinking and digestibility of what was read.
The glasses, in this design, played the role of a shock absorber, preventing the eyes from becoming spoiled and tired. The hardest part of creating these glasses was finding the materials, specifically the White Crystal.
After all, if the lenses were made of ordinary glass, the eyes would hurt a lot in an hour, and in a month, you could simply lose your sight. Applying runes was also no easy task. Most often, artificers who want to enhance their creations turn to the Rune Master for help, who applies the necessary runes for an additional fee. Because of this, Eros had to reconsider his plans and add a couple of stacks of books on runes. He would definitely be refused to apply runes to glasses with 128x acceleration.
The spell itself wasn't divine, so even if Eros saw the name of a component, it wasn't a fact that he would know what it was at all. Therefore, he tried to study as much as possible. As for Artifacting, Eros faced a difficult problem: money.
He simply didn't have the funds for practice, so he decided to memorize everything on this topic for now and fully focus on it in a year.
With runes, it was much easier for him because, at the initial level, only an object on which they would be applied, ink, and good hands and memory were needed.
Only at the intermediate level would he need the blood of magical beasts, magical ink from minerals, and a magic pen for applying runes of advanced level and above.
At the moment, Eros was still in the library, holding a pen in one hand, a board in the other, and looking at the textbook. He was applying the most common rune of heat. Such runes were never applied to items that were going to be sold but were only for beginners to practice. This was his twenty-fifth attempt.
'Do I really have no talent?' Eros thought with irritation, drawing it. At that moment, the rune lit up and went out after a couple of seconds. The next moment, a magic circle lit up on the titan's hand and the board disappeared. "Twenty-fifth..."
The pen fell out of his hand and rolled across the table.
'What am I doing wrong? The lines are all even, the proportions are perfect, the magic power is distributed evenly...' Eros's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a bell.
"What happened?" the titan quickly ran out of the library, where he saw that everyone in the guild was looking at the door. At that moment, the earth shook.
"An earthquake? What's happening!"
