Chapter 356: Chapter 362: Martin's Comfort and the Hangover Script
Since that flirty interaction on the beach, Jennifer had been avoiding Martin, seemingly uncomfortable around him.
Martin noticed her "evasive" behavior and decided to maintain some distance with an amused smile. After all, this kind of "push and pull" needed to be handled with care.
One day on set, Jennifer received a phone call. Her face changed drastically, and she quickly asked for leave before leaving the set in a hurry.
When she returned the next day, Martin immediately noticed her red, swollen eyes and her disheveled, haggard appearance, even though her makeup tried to mask it.
During a break in filming, Martin found Jennifer sitting alone in a corner.
"What happened? If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know," he said softly.
For the first time since their beach encounter, Jennifer didn't avoid Martin. Instead, she looked up at his handsome face with an intense expression and suddenly said, "Kiss me, Martin!"
Martin was momentarily stunned. Even he hadn't expected things to escalate this quickly.
Before he could react, Jennifer grabbed him by the collar and kissed him forcefully.
After about 20 seconds, they parted. Jennifer realized what she'd done and looked both flustered and shy, with a tinge of delight.
"Sorry, Martin," she stammered.
"Why are you apologizing?" Martin replied calmly.
Just as Jennifer was thinking of how to respond, Martin suddenly pulled her into his arms, holding her by the waist, and kissed her back passionately.
"Mm! Mmm..."
At first, Jennifer instinctively struggled, but soon, she melted into the fiery kiss and responded with equal passion.
When they separated again, Martin licked his lips and smiled.
"Now, can you tell me what's wrong?" he asked.
Jennifer's face was flushed, her breathing labored, and her eyes filled with emotion. It took her a while to calm down enough to speak.
Sitting side by side, Jennifer slowly opened up to Martin about her troubles.
The phone call she had received was from her family's housekeeper, who had informed her that her husband—Brad Pitt—had been caught cheating again, this time with a maid.
It wasn't the first time.
The first incident involved a maid accusing Brad of harassment and assault. Brad claimed it was a false accusation, and Jennifer chose to believe him, firing the maid. The second time, Jennifer caught Brad in their bedroom with another maid. Brad begged for forgiveness, claiming it was a moment of weakness. Jennifer chose to forgive him and fired the maid. This third time, Jennifer's housekeeper witnessed Brad pulling a maid into the guest room, prompting her to call Jennifer. Jennifer rushed home and caught him in the act.
"This time, I'm done lying to myself. I'm going to leave him. I'm filing for divorce," Jennifer declared, tears streaming down her face.
Martin gently pulled her into his arms, letting her cry against his chest.
When she looked up again, she was met with Martin's deep, steady gaze—and his lips, once again, closing in on hers.
Jennifer wanted to say this wasn't right, but before she could utter a word, she lost herself in his kiss once more.
Martin kissed her lips, her cheeks, her nose, her eyes, and even her tear-streaked face. The salty taste seemed to mirror Jennifer's inner turmoil.
When they separated for the third time, Jennifer felt light-headed and breathless.
She tried to speak but struggled to gather her thoughts.
"Martin, this isn't—"
Before she could finish, Martin kissed her again.
"This is—"
Another kiss.
"We—"
Another kiss.
"I—"
Another kiss.
"STOP!" Jennifer finally shouted. When she looked down, she realized they were now pressed tightly together, his warmth seeping into her.
"I was trying to say—"
Seeing Martin lean in again, Jennifer quickly blurted out, "No, no, no! I was trying to say that after this movie wraps, I'm moving back to New York. I'm separating from that bastard Brad!"
Martin paused, smiling mischievously.
"You're teasing me!" Jennifer exclaimed, equal parts embarrassed and angry.
"So, how do you plan to punish me?" Martin asked, his deep voice carrying an undeniable charm.
Images she shouldn't have been thinking about flooded Jennifer's mind. She shook her head, trying to dispel them.
The more she tried not to think about it, the clearer the images became.
"I—"
Martin leaned closer, pinning her against the wall.
"Take your time to think about it. Just remember, I'll make all your wishes come true," he whispered, brushing his lips lightly against her nose before leaving.
Jennifer stood frozen, feeling empty without Martin's embrace. She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around herself, replaying the moment in her mind.
For the rest of the day's filming, Jennifer was in top form. When she acted opposite Martin, their chemistry was undeniable, as if they shared a secret bond.
That evening, Jennifer wanted to talk to Martin but saw him chatting animatedly with director Todd Phillips.
Disappointed, she turned and left.
"Hey, Todd, did you watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding when it came out in August?" Martin asked.
"Of course! The success of that film was unbelievable. It's just a simple wedding-themed comedy with an ethnic twist, yet it performed so well," Todd replied.
Martin nodded thoughtfully. While My Big Fat Greek Wedding didn't have the massive fanfare of Harry Potter, Spider-Man, or The Lord of the Rings, its North American box office haul of over $400 million and global gross exceeding $700 million was astounding for a low-budget film.
It even outperformed blockbusters like The Matrix ($646 million) and The Bourne Identity ($491 million).
"This film is a prime example of doing more with less," Martin said. "I have an idea I'd like to discuss with you."
Todd's eyes lit up. Was Martin hinting at another collaboration? He eagerly asked, "What's on your mind, Martin?"
Martin began to outline the plot of The Hangover:
"It's a wedding story. A groom—we'll call him Doug—and his friends Phil, Stu, and Alan drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. After a wild night of partying, Doug goes missing.
The three friends, completely hungover and with no memory of what happened, must piece together the events of the night to find Doug and get him back to Los Angeles in time for his wedding…"
The story Martin shared was, of course, the plot of The Hangover from the original timeline.
Having missed out on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Martin wasn't going to let this opportunity for another low-budget comedy smash hit slip through his fingers.
And coincidentally, in the original timeline, the director of The Hangover was none other than Todd Phillips.
