"Argh!" Just as Mika and Riser were about to begin their duel, a scream echoed from the sky, followed by Grayfia's announcement:
[A Queen from Riser Phenex's peerage has been eliminated.]
Riser's face darkened. "Yubelluna has been defeated by the Priestess of Thunder."
Like those in Orario, Devils also had a fondness for bestowing titles.
With his Queen eliminated, Riser was now outnumbered. While his younger sister, Ravel, was still present, he had no intention of letting her fight.
And Mika—a formidable opponent who had just declared his intent to end the game, posed a significant threat.
He was now in a precarious position. He feared the possibility of exhausting himself against Mika, only to be overwhelmed by Rias and her peerage.
After all, Rias—with her inherited Power of Destruction—He didn't want to experience that destructive power firsthand.
"This is bad—I could actually lose a Rating Game…to be defeated by a human—a disgrace to the Phenex clan!" He shifted his focus back to Mika.
"To think I'd be defeated by being ganged up on. What an ironic fate for an immortal being."
"Still whining about being outnumbered?" Mika taunted, swinging his spear, the gust of wind snapping Riser out of his self-pity.
"Don't make me laugh! I told you—I will end this myself here and now." He dispelled his spear and clenched his fists, two different types of demonic energy swirling around them like flames.
"I will make you experience true pain—"
With that, he vanished, reappearing instantly before Riser.
BAM!
His fist, wreathed in flames, struck Riser in the abdomen, the force of the blow sending him reeling.
A strange energy pulsed through Riser's body, its power unlike anything he had encountered before, even among High-class Devils.
"He's a monster…" But that was just the beginning. As the energy spread through his body, Riser's eyes widened in horror.
He could feel it; his very soul was under attack. His mental fortitude wavered, pushing him closer to his breaking point.
BOOM!
BAM!
Mika's next blow sent him crashing to the ground. A deafening explosion followed, and smoke filled the arena.
"H-How can you attack my soul?!" Riser roared, his flaming wings dispelling the smoke as he struggled to his feet, clutching his abdomen.
"How?"
"There's no 'How'," Mika replied calmly, hovering above him, his right hand raised, demonic energy swirling around it like a flame.
"It's simple—because I can."
The ability to directly attack the soul was the reason Mika was so confident in his ability to defeat a Phenex.
This power stemmed from his understanding of the [Third Magic] from the Fate/Type-Moon universe, one of the first ultimate abilities he had encountered.
Gabriel had been studying it ever since, but Mika's constant requests and assignments had delayed her progress. However, after acquiring knowledge of Devils and the God of the Bible, her research had accelerated significantly.
While she hadn't fully deciphered it yet, she had developed several related techniques. The [Third Magic, Heaven's Feel, Materialization of the Soul], was directly related to souls, allowing Mika to develop a method for attacking them directly.
And the mind—was merely an aspect of the soul.
Therefore, against a Phenex—whose regeneration couldn't restore mental or spiritual damage, Mika had an absolute advantage.
Their earlier exchanges had merely been tests, experiments to gauge the effectiveness of his new abilities.
After all, his companions in Orario lacked the convenient resurrection ability of the Phenex clan.
He wouldn't waste such a perfect opportunity.
"Accept your defeat—Riser," he said, descending swiftly.
"No! This is impossible!" Riser roared, unleashing a torrent of Phoenix flames that engulfed the arena.
"You have no idea how important this engagement is! You're trying to destroy it! You don't understand what you're doing!"
"It doesn't matter." A wave of chilling cold emanated from Mika, freezing the flames instantly.
"I don't care about your reasons. They're meaningless to me. And to say such things during a battle…Riser, where is your Phenex pride? Don't disappoint me."
Riser froze, then roared in fury.
"Argh!" He gathered all his strength, no longer relying on his immortality. He would fight with everything he had, determined to secure his own future.
Mika smiled. His right hand, wreathed in demonic flames, now pulsed with icy energy.
The clash of Fire and Ice was about to reach its climax.
....
"Argh!" Riser charged, all his power concentrated in a single, flaming fist. Even from a distance, Mika could feel the searing heat, the intensity of the flames increasing dramatically.
"Pushing past your limits, your power increasing exponentially…But it's not enough. The gap between us is too vast. You can't defeat me."
"I'll end this with…ice." He raised his hand, icy energy swirling around it, and charged.
In a flash, they were upon each other.
"Argh!"
"Ha!" Their attacks collided—fire against ice—two opposing forces locked in a struggle for dominance.
The stalemate lasted only a moment.
Mika's ice overwhelmed Riser's flames, engulfing him in a chilling wave of frost that rapidly spread outwards, freezing everything in its path.
A massive ice pillar, originating from Riser's body, formed, spanning half the arena and reaching its ceiling.
"I—lost…" Riser murmured, the flames surrounding his body flickering before finally extinguishing. The ice's inherent spiritual attack pushed his mind to its breaking point. With a flash of light, he vanished, teleported out of the arena.
Silence descended upon the battlefield.
Then, Grayfia's voice echoed from the PA system. "Riser Phenex has been eliminated. Therefore, I declare the victor of this Rating Game to be Rias Gremory!"
"Yes! We won! Mika is the strongest!" Issei and the others cheered.
Ravel, Riser's sole remaining peerage member, stared in disbelief.
"My brother lost?" Though her mind was filled with questions, no one answered. The victor's joy and the loser's sorrow were worlds apart.
While she mourned Riser's defeat, Mika was being celebrated.
....
"You were amazing, Mika!"
"As expected of you!"
"You're so reliable, Mika!" Issei, Yuuto, and Koneko rushed over to congratulate him.
Mika couldn't help but smile. Although the battle had been easy for him, victory was always sweet.
"As expected of our Hero! Excellent work!" Akeno praised him.
He turned and saw her approaching with Rias and Asia. Her clothes were torn, suggesting her battle against Yubelluna hadn't been easy.
However, thanks to Asia's healing, she was fully recovered.
Mika's gaze shifted to Rias. He walked past Issei, Yuuto, and Koneko, stopping before her. "Buchou, I've brought you victory."
"Thank you, Mika." Rias's eyes filled with tears. She rushed forward and hugged him, much to his surprise.
…
After their victory, they returned to Kuoh Academy through the Magic circle.
However, Rias didn't return with them.
She had to go to the Underworld to deal with the aftermath of the Rating Game and formally dissolve her engagement with Riser.
She would be gone for a few days.
Before leaving, she gave Mika and her peerage a few days off, telling them to relax and enjoy themselves.
Akeno would handle any school-related matters.
With their unexpected vacation, and the Rating Game having taken place late at night, they returned to the human world just as dawn was breaking.
Mika wasn't tired. Even if he had been, his two inner companions wouldn't have let him rest.
Having witnessed the power of Devils—Gabriel was eager to discuss the development of his Light-based abilities, while Alfia wanted to Experience the Devil's power through him. He had been quite busy.
However, the next day, he was granted a reprieve. Issei and Asia came to visit.
"Issei, what a surprise! To what do I owe the pleasure?" he asked with a smile, leading them inside.
"Hahaha…" Issei scratched his head, embarrassed. He wasn't the type to visit others unless he needed something.
"Alright, enough laughing. What's going on? I doubt you're here for a social call."
Issei straightened up, his expression turning serious. "Mika, last night, I heard a voice in my dreams." He summoned Boosted Gear.
"And I gained—new powers. But I'm not sure how to use them. And since Buchou isn't here, I thought I'd ask you for help."
"I see…" Mika nodded.
He was familiar with Issei's situation.
In the original story, without Mika's intervention, Issei had unlocked more of Boosted Gear's power during his battle against Riser's peerage. And after his defeat—he had even awakened Ddraig, the Red Dragon Emperor's spirit—gaining access to the Balance Breaker.
It seemed, even in this altered timeline, Issei's path hadn't changed completely.
He had still gained new powers.
