Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Akeno: “I Was Here First!”
Aside from the small incident on the way to school, the morning's campus life was uneventful.
Before anyone knew it, it was the afternoon—time for club activities.
Before leaving the classroom to head toward the old school building, Fukuki took a moment to glance at his phone. Yesterday, after dealing with the special-grade cursed spirit, he had exchanged contact information with Saeko Busujima during their return trip. It was meant to ensure smoother communication in the future.
Considering his ability to destroy Sukuna's fingers, it was inevitable that this information, once reported to the Jujutsu Society, would attract significant attention and deliberation.
However, given that it was already the afternoon and no messages had arrived, it seemed the old-timers at the Jujutsu Society were still bickering without a conclusion. This likely meant nothing unexpected would happen today.
The scene shifted to the old school building.
As expected, in the familiar reception room, Rias Gremory, Akeno Himejima, and Koneko Toujou had already arrived. The three girls were sitting on the sofas surrounding the coffee table, leisurely enjoying their afternoon tea.
Hearing the sound of footsteps behind them, Rias was the first to turn her head. Her beautiful face lit up with a delighted smile as she saw the boy entering.
"Good afternoon, Fukuki. Come, have a seat…"
She patted the spot on the sofa beside her, clearly indicating that he should sit next to her.
Before her words could fully land, Akeno, sitting on the opposite sofa, lightly placed a hand on her cheek and let out a soft chuckle.
"Oh my, oh my~ It seems the president is quite fond of Fukuki. She always insists on having him sit by her side."
"Wh-what?!"
Not expecting such a sudden remark from her close friend and confidante, Rias was taken aback, her cheeks quickly turning a faint shade of pink.
"S-stop saying such strange things, Akeno! I only asked him to sit here because this side is empty. You already have Koneko sitting with you. If Fukuki sits on your side too, it would look like some boss scolding his subordinates!"
"Oh my~ Is that really so?"
Akeno, still stroking her cheek with her hand, smiled warmly but with an odd glint in her eyes. Slowly, she turned her head toward the white-haired girl sitting beside her.
Koneko: "…"
How should she put it? Most of the time, Akeno-senpai gave off a gentle, big-sister vibe, but when she looked down at others with that expression, it carried an inexplicable sense of intimidation.
Also, there was an old Chinese saying: Those who understand the situation are wise.
After barely a second of thought, Koneko raised her hand voluntarily.
"Then I'll sit next to President Rias. Fukuki-senpai, please sit over here…"
"Oh, no, no, no! There's no need for that!"
Seeing that the boy was about to be half-coaxed and half-pushed to the other side, Rias, half exasperated and half amused, stomped her foot lightly and stood up. She gestured for Koneko to remain seated while grabbing the boy's sleeve just as he approached the sofa.
"Today is fine as it is. If Akeno really insists, Fukuki can sit by her tomorrow. Honestly…"
Zap!
It was as if static electricity had suddenly discharged in the dry winter air. Without warning, a spark of white light appeared where her fingertips touched his sleeve. The red-haired girl, mid-sentence, instantly pulled her hand back.
"Huh? What's going on?"
Rias began shaking her hand as if she had been burned, too startled to figure out what had just happened.
It was Akeno who stood up first, her surprise evident as she looked at the two of them.
"That… That was the power of holy light! Fukuki, did you visit the church near here today?"
"Huh? No, I didn't."
Fukuki was just as confused.
He had never believed in any faith, not even the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Attending church services? Not a chance.
However… today, he did happen to meet a certain young nun. Hmm?
"Oh, now that you mention it…"
The boy clenched his fist and struck his palm as he recalled the events of that morning on his way to school.
After listening attentively, Akeno Himejima leaned closer and carefully examined the sleeve of his uniform.
"As expected," she murmured. "Although it's faint and almost imperceptible, this is undoubtedly the residual power of holy light. It's harmless to humans and would go unnoticed, but for us devils, it's incredibly suppressive. Simply being near a place like a church would make a devil feel uneasy. This must have rubbed off on you when you helped that nun pick up her veil."
"Ah, my bad, my bad."
Having understood the situation, Fukuki clasped his hands in apology. A radiant golden spiritual energy emanated from him, swiftly dissipating the lingering traces of the holy light.
Meanwhile, Rias Gremory sat back down after understanding the situation. As she recalled the earlier incident, she rested her chin on her hand, deep in thought.
"But this is strange. Ordinarily, only high-ranking clergy blessed with holy light would wear garments imbued with such power. These individuals, endowed with special abilities, are usually stationed in the Vatican or assigned to prominent churches in Europe, performing miracles and gathering faith. They rank even above administrative officials within the church. Why would someone of such stature be assigned to a place like Japan?"
"I'm curious about that as well," Fukuki admitted with a shrug. "I asked her briefly, but she didn't seem willing to explain."
"Well, never mind that for now. Rias, is your hand okay?" he asked, concerned.
"It's fine… Well, not completely fine."
As if realizing mid-sentence, Rias stopped herself, then smiled slyly. Mimicking Akeno's earlier gesture, she rested her face on one hand and extended her still slightly red fingers toward him.
"See? It's a little swollen. I heard humans use saliva to treat injuries for faster healing. Don't you think you should take responsibility for this, Fukuki?"
Her gaze became increasingly alluring, and her words dripped with suggestion. She leaned closer, her outstretched fingers nearly brushing against his lips.
Just as the situation seemed to spiral toward a less-than-appropriate direction, Akeno lightly cleared her throat from the opposite sofa.
"Before that, President, don't you think we should discuss the main topic? We said we'd wait for Fukuki to arrive before talking about it."
"Ugh, Akeno, you're such a...!"
Her rare opportunity interrupted, Rias pouted in slight frustration but didn't push the matter further. Clearing her throat, she straightened her posture and spoke seriously.
"Well then, onto the main issue—
"Last night, we detected the presence of fallen angels near Kuoh Academy."
"Although we're unsure of their identities or intentions, it's best for everyone to stay alert over the next few days."
--------
Meanwhile, in a church located on a hillside northwest of Kuoh Academy, the afternoon sunlight filtered through the high, stained-glass windows of the grand Gothic structure.
A long-haired young woman with black, angel-like wings stood atop a raised platform. Her scant attire, barely covering the essentials, accentuated her voluptuous figure. She addressed the group of individuals gathered below her.
"Understood? During this period, our objective is to completely eliminate all devil forces in this city. Leave no trace!"
"Understood!" x3
"Got it, got it~"
Although their responses were not entirely uniform, the sentiment was clear. Satisfied, the female fallen angel nodded approvingly. She gracefully descended from the platform with a light leap, her wings fluttering behind her.
She approached a blonde-haired nun who kept her head lowered the entire time, then licked her lips with a faint smirk.
"Asia, you're on board with this too, right? Don't worry. God has brought us, the exiled, together here for a reason. These trials are meant to prepare us for the chance to return to His embrace. Do you understand?"
"I... I understand..." the nun replied hesitantly.
