Chapter 115 : Bastard

"Wait, there's no way Uriel's going to shoot Mark. I know him, he wouldn't do something like that!"

Short in patience and aware that cryptids were most likely already closing in because of all the noise they made, Uriel knew he didn't have much time to decide on what to do. He took a gaze at Mark who was sweating cold but still refused to give up. He knew Mark, he knew bullies too well for his liking.

Even if Mark was afraid for his life, the only thing he feared even more than that was to be embarrassed in public and lose control over his goons.

Uriel softly pressed on the trigger as if caressing it. If he ended Mark's life he would have a short window of opportunity to run away as fast as he could before Mark's companions caught up to him, but even still, he already made the decision to pull the trigger. In that precise moment, just before he could fire, two friendly hands were placed on his shoulder and one over his back.

Even if they knew nothing about Uriel sacrificing 'his heart' they had noticed how different he was acting compared to when they first met him. Somehow they were able to know he wasn't playing around and would most likely pull the trigger.

That's why Sam and Medusa placed their hands on his shoulder, though because of her short stature Luna could only reach his back.

"Don't do it Uriel, it's not worth it." Medusa spoke with a voice soft as a whisper, though Mark was able to listen to her words too.

Only then did Mark realize the mistake he made by provoking Uriel. He thought he was facing the same spineless boy who he used to bully. The same who wouldn't even talk back at him and was only able to become an evolved after the army's incursion, but things were entirely different now.

"I- I yield." Mark muttered under his breath.

"Good boy, now hand over your battery and weapon. Don't try anything stupid or I'll give you a face makeover." Uriel acted like a cold blooded killer and, in the eyes of Tina's group, he was the villain. They didn't know how Mark bullied him for months or how he only got close to him to steal his girlfriend, all they knew was that Mark used to be his friend and now he was treating him like that.

"Bastard! You won't get away with this!" Mary, who obviously had a crush on Mark, yelled at Uriel.

"Watch me." Uriel replied after pushing Mark far enough so he could safely pick up Mark's weapon and battery. The weapon was a rifle of intermediate level and the battery was a tier 2. This was a huge loot for Uriel, especially considering that now they had enough energy to recharge their cellphones and hunt for a while longer. "Take this." Uriel said as he handed over the coil rifle to Sam.

"I don't know how to use this." Sam scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.

"Would you rather use your fists?" Uriel shrugged and turned to leave.

"Wait! Uri, please wait! It's too dangerous to be outside at night. Why don't you join us?" Tina asked.

"I'm going, and I recommend you to start running too. The cryptids won't be far."

As if on queue, the shrill sound of screams echoed in the vast city. Cryptids of all sizes started crawling out of their hideouts to seek for prey which prompted everyone to fall into panic.

Uriel's party made a run for it in the darkness knowing how dangerous it was to remain in big groups in the presence of cryptids but they didn't make it too far when Medusa turned around.

"Why are you stopping?" Sam asked.

"Those idiots!" Medusa exclaimed and ran back towards the group. The reason for her turning back was that she remembered how they were all carrying electric flashlights instead of lanterns. At that point, Luna and Sam didn't know what to do and Uriel was torn in between going back and help Medusa or keep running and let her assume the consequences of her actions.

"It's just beast rank cryptids, but without a light they'll most likely all die." Sam informed.

Rationally, it would have been an easy decision to just let them, but in reality, the minute Medusa turned back Uriel couldn't remain idle and he followed after her.

Tina and her group were completely surrounded by cryptids and, even though there were two heavenly rank hunters in her party, they had trouble keeping the cryptids at bay due to being forced to fight in the darkness of the night.

Medusa, as usual, jumped right into action in an elegant display of martial arts and Tina's group greeted her lantern with relief. The cryptids were many and everyone joined the fray by activating their traits and opening fire at the same time, everyone but Luna who remained by Uriel's side as he refused to get close to Tina's group.

The cryptids that swarmed the place were obviously weaklings. Even the basic weapons were enough to kill them with just a couple shots and they were easily dispatched as fast as they came. A small pile of beast rank corpses was formed around the group and they quickly started vanishing.

When the last shot was fired the lost city fell into silence again which allowed Tina to get to Uriel's side.

"That was close! But I knew you would come back and save us." Tina thanked Uriel, but he completely ignored her and went straight to Medusa who was being praised by the nearby hunters.

"Hey, don't do unnecessary things." Explore more at empire

"But they didn't have a light, they would have been wiped out."

"It's their fault and it's not our job to pick up after incompetent people." He scolded her making all of those nearby uncomfortable.

Both parties started picking up the flux orbs after the cryptids vanished, some of them were overjoyed by the spoils and greedily placed them in their backpacks, but that didn't go well with Uriel.
