Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Still Gotta Keep Up the Act
"You want me to fight him? I'm an auxiliary soul master. On the battlefield, no auxiliary soul master would engage in a direct duel with a powerful attack-type soul master. It's unfair!" Ning Rongrong frowned, rebutting Flender, feeling exasperated with his decision.
"Considering you're an auxiliary soul master, I'll allow you to pick three helpers from the five of them," Flender replied, gesturing toward Tang San, Dai Mubai, Ma Hongjun, Oscar, and Zhu Zhuqing.
"Three is too many; I only need one," Ning Rongrong declared confidently.
"Alright, just one then." Flender was eager to knock down Ning Rongrong's arrogance. He had initially intended for Tang San, Dai Mubai, Ma Hongjun, Oscar, and Zhu Zhuqing to team up against Mu Chen, but hearing Ning Rongrong's bold claim, he seized the opportunity.
"Dai Mubai, will you join me to fight him?" Ning Rongrong asked, knowing Dai Mubai's Evil Eye White Tiger was a royal martial spirit of the Star Luo Empire.
"Me? No, thanks." Dai Mubai, still bearing the bruises from his earlier encounter with Mu Chen, wanted no part of it. He still remembered being turned into a punching bag.
Ning Rongrong frowned and turned her gaze to Ma Hongjun.
"Don't look at me; I'm no match for him!" Ma Hongjun pleaded. He was terrified of Mu Chen after witnessing Zhao Wujin's defeat. If Zhao Wujin, a Soul Sage, had struggled, he certainly wouldn't fare any better.
Ning Rongrong's gaze shifted to Oscar, standing beside Ma Hongjun.
"I'm a food-type soul master. I really want to help, but you should know that even with your support, I can't win against him," Oscar said, feeling the pressure as he admired the noble girl.
Finally, Ning Rongrong's eyes fell on Zhu Zhuqing. Among the Shrek Seven Monsters, she couldn't ask Xiao Wu, so Zhu Zhuqing was her only option left.
Zhu Zhuqing remained silent. She neither refused nor stepped forward.
"Are you willing?" Ning Rongrong asked.
"I'm willing," Zhu Zhuqing replied, stepping forward gracefully and joining Ning Rongrong.
"It seems you've made your choice. Wait for me for a moment," Flender said, walking toward Mu Chen and speaking quietly, "Mu Chen, I need your help with something!"
"You want me to teach Ning Rongrong a lesson?" Mu Chen asked, having overheard their conversation.
"Yes," Flender nodded.
"Just know that we agreed beforehand—I won't accept any orders from Shrek Academy, nor will I comply with any training arranged by the academy," Mu Chen reminded him.
"I understand. You've seen it yourself; you enjoy certain privileges, but some of them are feeling quite dissatisfied," Flender said, looking conflicted.
"That's your problem," Mu Chen replied nonchalantly.
Although Mu Chen had a hidden task that required him to teach Ning Rongrong a lesson, he still had to maintain his act!
"Mu Chen, please, just help me this once. If you do, I, Flender, will owe you a favor," Flender pleaded like a subordinate.
"No need for favors. I can help you, but any consequences that arise from this will not be my responsibility," Mu Chen stated firmly.
"Deal," Flender agreed without hesitation.
In Flender's mind, Mu Chen was just a Soul Zun. Even if their sparring got out of hand, he was confident he could stop it in time to protect both Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing.
"Alright," Mu Chen nodded, standing up.
"Okay."
Flender threw a lit incense stick into the air, declaring, "Ning Rongrong, since you want to enjoy some privileges, I'll give you an opportunity. If you can withstand Mu Chen's attacks for a stick of incense, you'll have your freedom from me, and I won't impose any further restrictions on you!"
"That's what you said," Ning Rongrong replied with a smile.
"Yes, I said it. Let's begin." Flender grinned confidently.
"Spirit Cat, possess!"
Zhu Zhuqing concentrated, and her first soul ring glowed. Her claws transformed into sharp spikes, and her eyes changed color—one green and one blue, creating a mystical aura.
"Seven Treasures, first: Power!"
"Seven Treasures, second: Speed!"
Ning Rongrong's two yellow soul rings lit up beneath her feet, creating ripples in the surrounding space as beams of light enveloped Zhu Zhuqing.
With the light surrounding her, Zhu Zhuqing felt her body grow lighter and filled with power.
"Show your martial spirit!" Zhu Zhuqing urged.
"No need. I don't even need to use my martial spirit to deal with both of you," Mu Chen replied calmly.
"What? Not using your martial spirit?" Oscar exclaimed in surprise.
Tang San, Dai Mubai, and Ma Hongjun shook their heads slightly. This battle was destined to be one-sided.
"Are you sure?" Zhu Zhuqing asked, her brow furrowed.
"I'm sure!" Mu Chen affirmed.
"What bravado! You're just a level thirty-four Soul Zun. With my support, she will have a twenty percent increase in speed and power. Let's show him what we can do!" Ning Rongrong encouraged.
**First Soul Skill: Phantom Strike!**
Zhu Zhuqing activated her first soul skill, and her first soul ring glowed. Her sharp claws elongated, and with a sudden surge in speed, she lunged toward Mu Chen.
"You've lost!" Tang San predicted.
Tang San's gaze was fixed on Ning Rongrong.
Yu Xiaogang had told him that if they ever faced a team with a Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Clan auxiliary soul master, they had to eliminate the opponent immediately.
Ning Rongrong's overconfidence had led her to dismiss Zhu Zhuqing's protective role, letting Zhu Zhuqing take the offensive against Mu Chen. This was a guaranteed loss for her.
Sure enough, Zhu Zhuqing's claws easily pierced through Mu Chen's afterimages. At the same moment, Mu Chen appeared behind Ning Rongrong. He crouched down, forming a peculiar hand seal with his fingers pointed directly at Ning Rongrong's backside.
"Not good!"
Ning Rongrong's heart raced with alarm. Although she hadn't seen Mu Chen behind her, she sensed his movement through the air currents he stirred up.
