Chapter 254: Chapter 254: A Promising Start with Ya Fei
Mu Chen took another look at the girl in front of him.
The young girl exuded a pure charm, her large, expressive eyes almost speaking for her. However, her composure wavered after being berated by the mercenary. She clearly lacked the calm and confidence a seasoned merchant would have displayed.
Her somewhat awkward demeanor, combined with her poor attitude, made even those mercenaries who might have bought her Recovery Pills hesitate. For the small difference of one gold coin, they preferred not to deal with her.
In a matter of minutes, despite her efforts, the girl managed to sell only three bottles of pills.
Mu Chen couldn't have imagined that his first encounter with Ya Fei would unfold in such a manner.
Stepping forward, Mu Chen asked, "How much are the pills?"
Ya Fei glanced at him. Noticing that he seemed close to her age, yet already looked like a mercenary, her attitude softened considerably. She replied, "Ten gold coins per bottle."
Mu Chen picked up a jade bottle, holding it as though it were a precious treasure, and remarked, "This bottle is truly exquisite. It feels like a piece of fine jade."
Ya Fei smiled faintly. "Of course! These come from our Mittel Auction House."
Seeing her attention successfully diverted, Mu Chen asked, "I genuinely like this bottle. How much for an empty jade bottle? Five gold coins—will you sell it?"
Ya Fei stared at him in astonishment.
It was common knowledge that although the jade bottles were of high quality, even the best ones used for storing pills were worth at most two gold coins. Yet here was Mu Chen, offering five.
As she scrutinized Mu Chen again, Ya Fei wondered if she had misjudged him. Could he be some wealthy heir rather than a mercenary? Someone foolishly spending his fortune?
Seeing her hesitate, Mu Chen prompted, "What's the matter? Won't you sell?"
Snapping back to her senses, Ya Fei quickly replied, "Yes, yes, of course!"
When Ya Fei agreed, Mu Chen opened the bottle and took a whiff. The scent of medicinal herbs wafted out. The pills inside were, indeed, poorly shaped, appearing as though various ingredients had been haphazardly mixed together. Still, their efficacy was likely intact.
Mu Chen asked again, "If the bottle itself is worth five gold coins, how much for the pills alone without the bottle?"
Ya Fei, feeling a sense of camaraderie with someone her age, answered without hesitation, "That's simple. Subtract five from ten, so it's five gold coins."
"Great! I'll take all your pills," Mu Chen said immediately. "You've got fifty bottles left, right? That'll be 250 gold coins, correct?"
Ya Fei nodded, slightly stunned.
"Wait here; I'll get you the money," Mu Chen said, not giving her a chance to rethink.
Then, he stood next to her stall and began shouting, "Come one, come all! Freshly made Recovery Pills crafted by an alchemist from the Mittel Auction House! Just eight gold coins per bottle—much cheaper than the eleven gold coins charged by the Xiao, Oba, and Jia Lie families!"
"What?"
"Little brother, are you serious?"
"Recovery Pills for just eight gold coins a bottle?"
Mu Chen's loud proclamations quickly attracted the attention of many mercenaries on the street.
For mercenaries, their lives often depended on items like Recovery Pills. A small price difference could mean the world to them. With the pills now available for eight gold coins, a significant discount, the appeal was undeniable.
"This is a special celebration! A thank-you to all who've supported the Mittel Auction House. Today, only eight gold coins per bottle! Pills only—bottles not included. Don't miss out! Supplies are limited—first come, first served… Hey, hey! Don't push!"
Before Mu Chen even finished his pitch, the mercenaries, like sharks scenting blood, swarmed his stall. Within ten breaths, all fifty bottles of Recovery Pills were sold out.
"Got any more?" a mercenary asked Mu Chen eagerly.
"Nope. Sold out," Mu Chen replied with a grin, pocketing 150 gold coins and pointing at the remaining 250 coins on the table. "Here you go, little miss. Count it up—250 gold coins. Our deal is done. Oh, and I've heard the noodles at that street-side restaurant are pretty good. Time to treat myself!"
Still stunned, Ya Fei stared at the pile of coins and the now-empty jade bottles. Something felt off, but she couldn't immediately figure out what.
---
Leaving the Mittel Auction House, Mu Chen didn't go far. He stopped at a street-side noodle shop, ordered a bowl of noodles, and began eating with relish.
As he ate, someone sat down across from him. Looking up, Mu Chen saw Ya Fei glaring at him, her eyes sharp as daggers.
Completely unfazed, Mu Chen continued eating his noodles.
"Waiter, another bowl," he called out.
Soon, another bowl of noodles was placed before him. Mu Chen, ignoring Ya Fei's presence entirely, calmly resumed eating.
Bang!
Unable to contain her anger any longer, Ya Fei slammed her palm on the table.
"Got a problem?" Mu Chen asked lazily, without even looking up.
"How can you still eat?!" Ya Fei fumed.
"What's the matter?" Mu Chen asked, feigning ignorance.
"You cheated a girl out of her money—do you even have a conscience?" Ya Fei scolded.
"How did I cheat anyone? And wait, which girl are you talking about?" Mu Chen asked casually, still eating.
"Me!" Ya Fei exclaimed.
"When did I cheat you?" Mu Chen replied nonchalantly.
"Just now!" Ya Fei shot back.
"How exactly did I cheat you?" Mu Chen finally set his chopsticks down and looked her in the eye.
"One bottle of pills is worth ten gold coins. An empty jade bottle costs at most two gold coins. If you only bought the pills, the price should've been at least eight gold coins. But you only gave me five! Are you seriously going to deny cheating me?" Ya Fei glared at him, seething with anger.
It had taken her some time to realize what had gone wrong. Once she figured it out, she had rushed to the noodle shop to confront Mu Chen and demand justice.
