Chapter 51: Chapter 51: "Whoever Feeds You is Your Boss, Right?"
With the help of Oscar's sausages, the group from Shrek Academy covered over 400 kilometers in just one day. By nightfall, they were close to the Star Dou Forest. Realizing they wouldn't reach their destination before dark, Zhao Wuji ordered a rest stop.
They happened to arrive at a small town that was much livelier than Yun Feng had expected. The town was about three times the size of the village where Shrek Academy was located. Despite the lack of city walls, it resembled a small city, with bustling streets lined with shops selling all sorts of goods.
As Yun Feng observed, he noticed that most of the shops catered to Spirit Masters. Some specialized in weapons, armor, antidotes, and restorative potions, while even clothing stores sold specially designed outfits with numerous pockets for carrying supplies, ideal for Spirit Master adventures.
Yun Feng sighed, "They say people live off the land, and this must be the perfect example. This town clearly thrives off the proximity to the Star Dou Forest. I imagine there are many such towns surrounding the forest."
Hearing Yun Feng's words, Ning Rongrong, full of curiosity, asked, "But we're still nearly 100 kilometers from the forest. Isn't that a bit far?"
Yun Feng nearly laughed out loud. What kind of question was this? It seemed logical to anyone with common sense. But seeing it was Ning Rongrong, he understood.
"Ah, the sheltered life of a noble young lady," Yun Feng thought to himself, then explained, "You're probably used to the government-maintained spirit beast reserves, where the spirit beasts are relatively docile and don't attack humans proactively.
"But the Star Dou Forest is different—it's a wild habitat for spirit beasts. The beasts here are far more aggressive, and some of the ones on the outskirts occasionally wander out of the forest. If towns were too close, it would be disastrous.
"As the saying goes, reading a thousand books is no match for traveling a thousand miles. You still have much to learn."
To everyone's surprise, Ning Rongrong didn't argue. After all, she wasn't someone who threw tantrums over everything.
Zhao Wuji then pointed to a modest-looking inn ahead and said, "We'll stay here for the night. We leave at dawn tomorrow. Everyone is responsible for their own expenses."
Shrek Academy had always been financially strapped. Teachers like Zhao Wuji and Flender didn't have regular incomes and lived modestly. In contrast, the students received allowances from Spirit Hall, which covered their daily needs.
The inn was a simple two-story building, with a dining area on the ground floor and rooms upstairs. Zhao Wuji booked a single room for himself and went upstairs without another word.
As Yun Feng was about to get a room, Oscar and Ma Hongjun approached him.
"Brother Feng, why don't the three of us share a room? We can save some money," Oscar suggested.
Yun Feng waved them off immediately. "No thanks. You two can ask Tang San to join you. I prefer to have my own space, and besides, you're not girls."
Hearing this, Oscar and Ma Hongjun could only grimace and walk away to find Tang San.
Meanwhile, Zhu Zhuqing, Xiao Wu, and Ning Rongrong decided to share a room. It wasn't about money—they simply wanted to stay together.
"Let's eat before heading up. After a whole day of sausages, I'm getting nauseous," Ma Hongjun said, voicing what everyone was thinking. Even Yun Feng and Zhu Zhuqing nodded in agreement.
The seven of them found a table in a corner and sat down. Tang San glanced around the group and suddenly suggested, "Should we invite Teacher Zhao to join us? After all, we'll need his protection in the forest."
Oscar and Ma Hongjun shook their heads immediately. "No need. Teachers at Shrek never accept favors from students. It's one of the rules set by Dean Flender."
Oscar added, "According to the dean, mixing personal and professional matters can lead to unnecessary complications. Better to keep things clean."
Yun Feng raised an eyebrow at this, but after thinking about it, it made sense. It fit his impression of Flender. After all, as a teacher, it wouldn't look good to constantly mooch off students. Better to eat simple food and avoid awkward obligations.
Ning Rongrong chuckled. "Well, it seems our dean does have some redeeming qualities."
She then smiled brightly and said, "I'm in a good mood today. All expenses are on me. Order whatever you want!"
Hearing this, Oscar and Ma Hongjun nearly fell to their knees in gratitude. Both of them were notorious spendthrifts—Ma Hongjun openly, and Oscar secretly. Neither had much money, and it had been ages since they'd had a proper meal.
Ma Hongjun's round face jiggled with excitement as he laughed, "Great! Don't worry, Boss Rongrong, I'll make sure to enjoy this to the fullest!"
Oscar rolled his eyes and said, "So, whoever feeds you is your boss now?"
Ma Hongjun grinned shamelessly. "Of course! Unless you want to treat me? If you do, I'll happily call you boss too!"
Everyone burst into laughter at Ma Hongjun's lack of shame.
Ma Hongjun wasted no time, calling over a waiter and ordering over a dozen dishes, many of which Yun Feng had never even heard of. Ma Hongjun, however, looked ecstatic.
When the food arrived, Ma Hongjun's mouth practically watered at the sight of the dishes. If not for the fact that Ning Rongrong was paying, he would've started eating immediately.
Ning Rongrong simply smiled and said, "Dig in. If it's not enough, just order more."
Although the seven of them sat together, each had their own thoughts. A lot had happened recently, and while there weren't any direct conflicts among them—except for Tang San and Yun Feng—there was still an undercurrent of tension.
Tang San, however, was working hard to keep a low profile and had no intention of provoking Yun Feng.
The restaurant was about two-thirds full when a group of people suddenly entered from outside.
Yun Feng noticed them immediately and couldn't help but think that things were about to get interesting.
