Chapter 9
Ophelia decided to be honest with her brother and ask him about her current dilemma
“…The truth is, I can’t contact Hugo. I sent him letters, but he ignored all of them.”
“Hugo? That can’t be. I went to Hugo’s office today, and there were piles of letters. But he said he had read them all and thrown some in the trash.”
“Did you happen to see a letter wrapped in violets?”
“…..”
Fabian, who was furrowing his brow as if trying to recall, flinched and subtly avoided eye contact. So, it did exist?
“It was probably a mistake…”
“I doubt it was a mistake to throw away five letters.”
It seemed that Hugo was just as indifferent on his side. Oh, how foolish she was. Ophelia couldn’t tell if Hugo’s attention was fixed on the ground or the sky. She had never thought of herself as unattractive. While Hugo might not have shared her taste, it was absurd for him, as someone who was not a noble himself, to hesitate considering her appearance and background.
“Now, he isn’t going to say that his feelings have changed, is he?”
“That’s not the case. Hugo is a decisive and straightforward person. If his feelings had changed, he would have ended the engagement already.”
“Then why…?”
Fabian narrowed his eyes, trying to make sense of it.
“Did you have a fight with Hugo?”
“A fight? Me? I’ve never done such a thing.”
“Or maybe you upset Hugo in some way. Think carefully. Hugo is generally polite, but he doesn’t show mercy to those who cross the line.”
Lost in thought, Ophelia shook her head. She remained absorbed in her thoughts until she returned to her room without finding an answer.
‘He did seem offended when I forced the contract on him.’
The image of Hugo, with his wicked smile, came to Ophelia’s mind, but she couldn’t believe he would be so narrow-minded. Moreover, she couldn’t understand why the contract was offensive, so she considered that perhaps it was her own prejudice that made it seem like Hugo was upset in that moment. Shaking her head, she picked up her pen again.
It may not be pleasant, but it’s better than not even looking at it and throwing it away. If he reads the letter, she can propose an arrangement that he might find appealing. An offer he can’t resist.”
(I will be attending a party soon. In order to avoid suspicion about our relationship, it would be best if you visit the Denev Estate. I can come to your place as well. Please contact me in whichever way is convenient for you.
P.S. If you also throw away this letter, I won’t send any more letters. Then you won’t hear about the party either.)
As she had guessed, Hugo is going through with this marriage because he needs her background. She didn’t know why he was behaving this way, but the proposal seemed intriguing.
As Ophelia expected, Hugo came to find her two days later.
