Chapter 563: The Delayed System Mission
"Who exactly are you?"
Just as Kaguya was about to step forward to support the unsteady Akira Mado, Akira pushed her away, fixing her with a piercing gaze. Her voice was steady and cold as she said, "If I'm not mistaken, you're not part of the CCG. There's no record of you in the CCG's database."
Kaguya froze for a moment, inwardly panicking.
She suddenly realized she had forgotten to disguise her face to resemble Tsukiyomi. Instead, she had only changed the color of her hair and eyes. Although she still looked stunning, it was a far cry from the somewhat less breathtaking appearance of her alter ego. This discrepancy was bound to raise suspicions.
"Well, uh..." Kaguya scratched her head and gave an awkward laugh.
It was entirely her fault. She had created so many identities for her amusement that even she sometimes lost track of them. The inevitable result was slipping up like this.
"From what Jason said earlier, it seems like he knows you, doesn't he?" Akira's eyes were sharp as she took a step back, her stance immediately shifting into a defensive posture.
"Jason?" Kaguya blinked before realizing Akira was referring to Yamori's alias, Jason.
"Could it be that you're a ghoul?" Akira said as she raised her weapon, her tone heavy with suspicion.
"No, no, you've got it all wrong! I'm not a ghoul," Kaguya quickly waved her hands in denial. "Actually, I—"
Before she could finish her sentence, a card slipped out of Kaguya's pocket, carried by a gust of autumn wind. It fluttered through the air and landed right at Akira's feet.
"Hmm?" Akira bent down to pick up the card. When she saw the photo and name on it, her eyes narrowed slightly. She looked up and said, her tone sharp, "Tsukiyomi? Why do you have her ID?"
The card was indeed Tsukiyomi's identification, which Kaguya had been carrying for moments when she switched to that identity. Due to the intensity of the earlier battle, the card had shifted in her pocket and fallen out during the commotion.
In a sudden flash of inspiration, Kaguya came up with a way out.
"Actually, Tsukiyomi..." Kaguya coughed lightly and said, "She's my sister."
"Your sister?" Akira blinked, her brow furrowing as she replied, "But she's never mentioned having a sibling, and her official records clearly state she has no family."
Kaguya broke out in a cold sweat. Was this woman some kind of monster to remember such details so precisely?
Left with no choice, Kaguya decided to brazenly continue her fabricated story.
"We were separated as children," she said, feigning sincerity. "We hadn't been in contact for years. It was only recently that I found out she's with the CCG, so I came here to find her."
"Is that so?" Akira frowned slightly, her expression skeptical. She turned away and said, "Fine, I don't know her that well anyway. But she is an outstanding investigator."
Outstanding?
Kaguya's eye twitched. Her Tsukiyomi identity hadn't exactly done much in the way of legitimate work—if anything, it had caused more destruction than anything else.
"But this isn't the time to discuss that," Akira said, her gaze sharpening. "The Aogiri Tree has already breached the base. It won't be long before they overrun the final defenses."
"Why would the Aogiri Tree attack the CCG? Are they trying to start an all-out war?" Kaguya asked, her tone puzzled.
When someone decides to do something, there's always a purpose behind it. Similarly, if the Aogiri Tree has made a move, there must be a specific reason for their actions.
Otherwise, they wouldn't risk infiltrating the CCG's base. While the branch of the CCG may be somewhat weaker than its headquarters, it still boasts several powerful Special-Class Investigators. In the original story, the Anteiku café in the 20th ward was destroyed by the CCG, and even though Anteiku's strength wasn't insignificant, it still fell short compared to Aogiri Tree.
If Kishou Arima is indeed present at the base, this battle will be far more challenging for the Aogiri Tree. After all, Arima is not one to be trifled with.
"The war began decades ago," Akira Mado said coldly. "They've come here for something—there's no doubt about it. It's likely they're after something valuable within the CCG."
Akira didn't directly respond to Kaguya's question. Instead, dragging her injured body, she began walking toward the CCG base step by step. "We must get there before Aogiri breaches the defenses. If they break through, it'll be too late."
"Wait—"
Just as Kaguya was about to call out to her, a familiar voice rang in her ears.
"Phew, finally got in touch with you."
The voice was none other than the System Loli.
"You!" Kaguya clenched her teeth in frustration, her tone menacing. "How dare you treat me like this! Are you itching for a spanking?"
Just the thought of how this loli had thrown her into this world without any warning filled Kaguya with anger. She wanted nothing more than to catch the little troublemaker and give her a good thrashing.
"Ah!" On the other side of the transmission, there was a clatter, as if something had been knocked over. After a moment, the loli's timid voice returned, "I didn't mean to! The system crashed earlier, and I couldn't contact you, so…"
"The system crashed?" Kaguya's eyelid twitched. "Do you think I'm that easy to fool?"
"It's true!" the System Loli said hurriedly. "I swear I'm not lying. If I am, you can… you can eat me!"
What?
Thinking of the loli's petite figure, Kaguya couldn't help but gulp. But she quickly shook her head, forcing herself to say, "You're so small. There's hardly any meat on you—what's the point?"
"You're so rude!" Even without seeing her, Kaguya could imagine the System Loli puffing her cheeks in indignation.
"Fine," Kaguya sighed, deciding not to get bogged down in trivialities. "Just tell me what my mission is. I've been wandering around clueless, too scared to do anything for fear of ruining the mission."
"Alright, let me check…" The loli's voice dragged out as she fiddled with something on her end. "Got it! Your mission is to bring peace between humans and ghouls, achieving coexistence between the two."
"What?"
Kaguya froze, her mind reeling. What kind of absurd mission was this?
Coexistence between humans and ghouls?
How was that even remotely possible?
It was like asking a wolf to stop hunting sheep and live peacefully with them in the same pen. It simply defied reason!
This mission was outrageous.
Kaguya began to suspect that the little loli had intentionally set her up.
How was that even possible?
It was akin to asking wolves to stop hunting sheep and peacefully coexist in the same pen. Completely absurd!
Boom!
A deafening explosion roared in the distance, the sound traveling clearly to where Kaguya stood, miles away.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The series of blasts lit up the horizon with flashes of light, while thick smoke billowed into the sky like fireworks.
"This is bad."
Akira's eyes widened in alarm as she turned to the distant CCG base, beads of sweat forming on her brow. Such large-scale explosions were far from normal. The CCG wouldn't use such weapons within their own base unless their armory had been breached.
The situation between humans and ghouls must have escalated beyond control. The thought of the consequences sent a chill down her spine.
"We have to move now," Akira said, her voice tense. She gritted her teeth and, despite her injuries, began dragging her weary body toward the base.
Before she could get far, a hand grabbed her wrist. Akira turned to see the black-haired girl holding her back.
"Where do you think you're going?" Kaguya asked. "Are you seriously planning to head over there in your condition?"
"Are you an idiot?" Akira snapped, her temper flaring. "If the CCG falls, it won't just be the organization that suffers—it'll plunge the entire 20th Ward into chaos."
"And yet, in your current state, you can't fight, can you?" Kaguya retorted, shrugging nonchalantly. "If the situation is as dire as you claim, your presence won't change the outcome."
"What are you suggesting, then?" Akira's rising frustration boiled over as she yanked her hand free. "Are you saying I should just stand here and do nothing?"
"First, you should focus on your own health," Kaguya said with a smile, tapping her chin thoughtfully. "How about this? Let me handle the situation. What you should do is evacuate the civilians and tend to those who are still alive. If they don't get help soon, they'll only end up as bodies to bury."
"You?" Akira's expression was incredulous.
Akira froze for a moment, then quickly turned her head. She saw the injured investigators sprawled across the ground, their faces pale and bodies drenched in blood. They were barely clinging to life. Though they weren't dead yet, it was clear they wouldn't last much longer without immediate aid.
"And you…" Akira turned back to Kaguya urgently, her voice trembling with concern.
"It's nothing," Kaguya said with a smile. "You stay here. If you come with me, I'll have to take care of you too, and that would be… quite a hassle."
"You don't need to go," Akira said sharply. "This is a fight between the CCG and Aogiri Tree. There's no reason for you to put yourself in danger." Her hands clenched into fists, her tone filled with urgency. "It's possible… you won't come back."
Even though the black-haired girl in front of her clearly had immense strength, facing the infamous Aogiri Tree was a different matter entirely. Even with her skills, there was a significant chance she wouldn't survive.
"Don't worry," Kaguya said lightly. "Didn't I already tell you? I'm really strong." She gave Akira a thumbs-up and winked. "But, you know, I don't work for free. So, let's do this instead…"
Her lips curled into a mischievous grin as she stepped closer to Akira.
"W-What are you trying to do?" Akira stammered, a sudden unease creeping over her.
In the next moment, before Akira could react, Kaguya reached out, gently lifting Akira's delicate chin with her finger. Without a word, she leaned in, pressing her rosy lips against Akira's in a soft but deliberate kiss.
Her lips were soft and smooth, reminiscent of jelly, with a faint, sweet strawberry scent.
Kaguya, who had been abstaining from such indulgences for quite a while, found herself thoroughly satisfied. There was something undeniably captivating about the flavor of a beautiful woman.
Akira, on the other hand, was utterly stunned. The soft sensation on her lips and the close-up view of Kaguya's strikingly beautiful face left her brain short-circuiting. She never expected such a thing to happen, especially not with another girl. How could this be acceptable?
Snapping back to her senses, Akira shoved Kaguya away with all her strength, wiping her lips furiously. "What do you think you're doing?!"
Her cheeks, however, betrayed her, flushed a deep crimson.
"Nothing much. You taste pretty good," Kaguya teased, running her finger across her lips. She chuckled and added, "I mean, I'm helping you out, right? Taking a little interest isn't too much to ask, is it?"
"Pervert!" Akira growled, biting her lip in frustration, her anger barely restrained.
Kaguya laughed, turned around, and waved a hand dismissively as she started walking away. "Just wait here for the good news, okay?"
"Go to hell!" Akira snapped, picking up a nearby stone and throwing it at Kaguya with all her might.
But by then, Kaguya's figure had already disappeared into the cool, drizzling autumn rain.
The stone fell to the ground with a dull thud, rolling a few times before coming to a stop. Akira's black-and-white eyes filled with complex emotions. She tilted her head upward slightly, gazing at the heavy, clouded sky. In a voice barely audible, she murmured, "Idiot. Fool. You never even told me your name."
