Chapter 31: Difficulty Adjustment
Kai sifted through the rubble in the dimly lit alleyway when the lights suddenly went out across the USJ. Before he could react, the Ectoplasm clone materialized beside him, rapidly shifting into its hybrid form.
Kai glanced at him, unbothered. "Is this a test from Nezu? To see how I'd react?"
"Not as far as I know," the clone replied, his eyes going glossy and unfocused for a second. Then he blinked and muttered, "Uh-huh. I'll tell him."
Taking a deep breath, the clone continued, "Nezu says the control room is down too. He's heading to the entrance with Snipe and my other clones. I've been instructed to bring you there immediately."
"Uh, okay? Any info on what's happening exactly?" Kai asked, visibly starting to sweat.
"We'll talk on the way."
Without warning, the clone grabbed Kai by the scruff of his neck, slinging him onto his back before dashing through the Downpour Zone. Rain lashed down in sheets, and the relentless downpour made the ground slick, but that didn't seem to matter to the kangaroo-powered clone. He bounced off and around every obstacle, never decelerating.
"Nezu's lost contact with the rest of the USJ," the clone explained as they sped along. "Snipe says his coms aren't working. Nezu suspects this is an attack. Our priority is the safety of you and Class 1-A. We're meeting at the entrance to the Downpour Zone to regroup and gather intel."
Kai clung tightly, trying not to slip off as they zipped through the rain-soaked chaos. Every leap and impact sent shocks through his arms, but the clone didn't slow down for a second.
"How do you know all of that?" Kai shouted over the pounding rain, readjusting his grip on the clone's trench coat. His knuckles were white, and he realized he was squeezing so hard that the mushy substance of Ectoplasm's form started to give beneath his grip.
"Hivemind," the clone answered. "All the clones share thoughts and senses. Without parallel processing, my Quirk would drive me insane. And loosen up—you're killing me."
"Sorry," Kai mumbled, but his grip didn't loosen one bit.

Nezu had been quietly observing Snipe's latest attempt at what could only be described as chunni Batman roleplay through the monitors when the power abruptly shut off, plunging his control room into darkness.
"How curious," Nezu murmured, hopping gracefully down from his chair.
As Nezu landed, his form shifted—fur bristling and muscles tensing as he returned to his Chimera state. His keen eyes quickly adjusted, allowing him to see clearly in the dark. His sharp gaze swept over the control room, calculating and calm as he assessed the situation.
He padded across the room, his small frame belying the power within, and reached for the door. Tugging on it, he discovered it was locked—automatically sealed by the power outage.
Undeterred, Nezu traced a precise circle on the center of the door with a clawed finger. The mark shimmered briefly with the prismatic glow of his Puzzle Fruit's power. With a light push, the etched section of the door fell away cleanly, clattering to the ground.
On the other side, Ectoplasm stood mid-motion, one leg raised to kick the door down. The original froze, then lowered his foot sheepishly.
"Efficient as always, Principal," the teacher said.
Nezu gave a polite nod, his expression as composed as ever. "Naturally. Let's proceed."
With practiced ease, the small principal scaled the Ectoplasm clone, perching comfortably on his broad shoulder. "It seems the power has gone out," Nezu remarked, his voice calm and measured. "Let's regroup at the entrance and assess the situation. Instruct your clones to bring Snipe and Mr. Sugimoto, if you would."
"Understood, Sir," the clone replied, his body seamlessly shifting into its kangaroo form to accommodate Nezu on his shoulder.
"Excellent," Nezu said with a faint smile. "How are they faring, and how far out are they?"
"Kai is with a clone navigating the cityscape," the clone reported. "He should reach the entrance in five minutes. Snipe and the remaining clones are scattered across rooftops. The furthest is eight minutes out."
"Good," Nezu replied, his sharp gaze fixed ahead. "Unfortunately, it seems we are under attack. Our utmost priority is the defense of the students. After we regroup, we need to join Class 1-A."
"Yes, Sir. Please hold on—I'm going to speed up now," the clone said, his stance shifting as he prepared to leap into motion.
Nezu tightened his grip slightly, unfazed by the sudden acceleration as they shot forward, the urgency of the situation hanging in the air like the rain around them.

Snipe was dashing across open space, using his new Walk Fruit to effortlessly glide over the rooftops when the power suddenly went out. Taken off guard by the blackout, his control faltered, and he unintentionally deactivated the fruit, plummeting to the ground.
He crashed hard onto a rooftop balcony, his body folding awkwardly around the railing before tumbling forward. He slammed into the sliding glass door with a dull thud, ricocheted off it, and crumpled onto the floor in a heap.
"Ugh… fuck, that hurt," he groaned, clutching his ribs as he tried to regain his bearings.
Wincing, he fumbled for his coms, hoping to ask what happened to the power and maybe get some help. But as he attempted to activate the device, a sharp crackle of static was all that greeted him. He cursed under his breath.
"Great... no signal either."
As Snipe struggled to push himself up from the floor, still wincing from the fall, the sound of footsteps echoed from behind him. He tensed, instinctively reaching for his weapon, but relaxed when he saw the familiar figure of an Ectoplasm clone approaching.
"Well hey there, partner. I reckon I could use a hand. I'm a bit banged up over here."
The Ectoplasm clone snorted but made its way over to pick up Snipe. "A bit, huh. I saw the fall, you know."
Snipe chuckled, his voice gruff. "Yeah, reckon if I hadn't been wearin' my Hero suit, I'd a' busted somethin' fierce. Lucky I've got that armor plating." He tapped the plating over his ribs and winced.
"Definitely bruised, though. So what's goin' on with the power? Even my coms ain't workin'."
The clone's eyes flickered for a moment, its focus shifting as it accessed information. "The control room went down. There's a possible breach. Nezu instructed me to find you and ensure your safety. We're regrouping with the others."
"Darn. Well, we best be gettin' a move on. Lead the way, ghost boy."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Snipe arrived at the entrance to the downpour zone to see the trio of Kai, Nezu and Ectoplasm waiting for him. Nezu and Kai were huddled together, the principal having dropped his Human form and Kai fiddling with some items he pulled out of his bag. He looks over to Ectoplasm and sees the man inhaling the white smoke that makes up his clones, effectively cannibalizing himself.
Deciding he wants nothing to do with that, he wobbles over to Nezu and Kai and says, "Status report."
Nezu responds. "All power cut, no contact with the outside world or Class 1A, All Might not present, no injuries in Kai, Ectoplasm and Myself. You?"
Snipe answers. "No contact with anyone, slight organ bruising, particularly on the liver and kidneys. Minor fractures in the ribs. I won't be capable of much movement."
Kai huffs and hands Snipe a small, light green Tangerine. "This should handle the injuries. I keep a few emergency fruits in my bag for first aid, but this is my last healer. It'll take care of the fractures but you'll still hurt."
"Fair enough." Snipe proceeds to open the front canister of his gas mask and drops the entire fruit in, not allowing anyone to see a hint of his features.
It's at this point that Ectoplasm rejoins the group, rubbing his mouth with the backside of his arm.
To make this scene more impactful, you could amplify the tension and drama with sharper, more vivid imagery and a sudden tonal shift. Here's a revised version:
"Ugh. I hate eating them when they've been out for so long. But I reckon I'll need the charges. Whatever, I'm ready now."
"Excellent!" Nezu cheered, his grin widening mischievously. "Let's regroup with Eraserhead and Thirteen. They'll be thrilled to see us join the fray!"
Kai flexed his fingers, a faint crackle of energy playing in his palms, rapidly reconfiguring anything he could find into some sort of weapon, wishing he'd prepared himself more for combat.
With a shared sense of purpose, the quartet pushed open the door to the Downpour Zone, stepping into the gloom with resolve. The patter of artificial rain was quickly drowned out by a thunderous crash.
A black blur hurtled past, slamming into the wall beside them with tremendous force. The wall cracked under the strength of the blow, leaving a crater in the side. The makeshift cannonball fell out of the hole in the wall, revealing the crumpled form of Tokoyami Fumikage.
Kai's heart clenched when he saw the fallen form of Tokoyami, Dark Shadow unwinding itself from around the teen apparently having used his own body to dampen the hit. Kai stared for a beat, then two, then three, wondering if he was dead.
After far too long for comfort, Kai saw Tokoyami's chest rise and fall, and released a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
His relief was short-lived, however, as he heard an intimidating voice behind him.
"Oh? New toys to play with. Good, I was getting tired of these ones."
Kai snapped his head to the direction of the voice and saw a sight that made his blood run cold. Standing in the center of the USJ was a giant man with dog-like features, birdlike talons instead of hands, and a thick reptilian tail visible from behind his large brown trench coat.
Kai started shaking in fear and incomprehension.
Wh- Wh- why is Chimera here? He only appeared way later in the plot, and it took like half of 1A to beat him AFTER finals! This is way too hard!
Kai's eyes darted around the USJ, looking for a way out, but found something far worse. Sitting at the fountain in the center of the plaza were three villains, idly chatting while the USJ Nomu stood by.
The first was a young woman with long red hair, dressed in a semi-professional suit and a domino mask.
The second was a man wrapped in red bandages, a simple black combat suit over top.
And the last was a villain with long white hair and a breathing apparatus on his face, like a gasmask.
Nine had infiltrated the USJ instead of Shigaraki.
And All Might wasn't there.
