Denizens of the Labyrinth

Book 2 Chapter Three; Orevalor the Dwarven City

Five days of travelling through the woods and he finally made it to civilisation. His storage was full, but he had made a sled sort of creation from pieces of wood he had badly whittled with his katana. The sled now carried a waterskin; that he had also made. While also carrying the drops he had collected from all the monsters that had harassed him as he travelled.

As soon as he stepped out of the trees lining the woods. He laughed and removed his hood; he had taken to wearing the rags he had gotten from the hag and though the cloak barely covered his body. It allowed him to cover his head when a rainstorm raged for two full days.

Stepping out of the woods he came onto a valley where the largest mountain Jazmel had ever seen stood. He could not think of any other words for it. But it was the biggest thing he had seen. It had been fashioned into a pyramid with a pointed tip at the very top, which was a clasp of silver. At the four corners of the pyramid stood a stone statue, a burly bearded being wearing thick armour and bearing either axe, sword, or hammer.

The north part seemed to be the entrance a great awning opening had been carved out of the mountain or pyramid side and two kneeling warriors held up the entrance as if to say they were opening the gate for all.

DING!

The system chimed into his mind.

Just from pulling his sled, he had gained 4 extra strength stat points and 5 for vitality and 4 for endurance. It had been tough work, but he was glad for it, his stats showed proof of his hard work. He made his way into the valley and as he neared the mountain, turned pyramid. Great carnyx horns sounded. The beings he had seen were small and burly but wearing thick armour and rushing around to escape from him.

He had found dwarves, a dwarven city. He had not seen any since he had entered the labyrinth and he realised just now; he had not considered them before. Now he was curious, and he needed to rest. He hoped they would let him in.

He got to the gates, thick wooden gates that blocked access to the pyramid and stood in front of the path that led up to the stone mountain.

“STATE YOUR BUSINESS!” someone from atop the wooden gate called down. He looked at them from beneath his hood and saw that they had Mana but inside it was locked away in them, in a bead of a myriad of colours. He had not seen this before and peered deeply at it.

“WE WILL SHOOT! STATE YOUR BUSINESS HERE!!” the voice called down again.

“I come seeking shelter! I have wares to sell for my room and board, but I seek shelter and a chance to replenish my stocks!” he called up and waited for word.

“REMOVE YOUR HOOD!” the voice called down and he did and soon the mutterings from above the gate could be heard, he could not hear what they were saying but he figured they were realising he was a seeker.

“WHAT ARE YOU?” the same voice called down and Jazmel looked up incredulously.

“I am a seeker?!” he said, confused.

“What is a seeker?” the voice shouted back. Jazmel then realised that they did not know what he was.

“I am a man!” he shouted back up and everyone began whispering even louder.

“We will open the gate, no sudden movements!” someone above said, a different voice this time, Jazmel noticed.

The gates opened quickly, and he noticed that a mechanism had been made to allow the gates to swing open on their own once a lever had been pulled. He looked at the design, stunned that it lacked Mana, there was nothing Mana made or magical. He was intrigued even more.

He hauled his sled in slowly and when the gates closed behind him, he looked around to see spear points and axes bared before him. A singular unarmed dwarf stood in front of him, he was wearing armour but carried no weapons, his beard was thick and singular beards bearing odd runes hung from it.

“Who are you?” the dwarf asked, eyeing Jazmel he was suspicious, and Jazmel could see that they all were. There was something about him that made them wary, he kept his swords sheathed on his belt, but he also raised his hands, so they were nowhere near. The dwarves that surrounded him were all baring their weapons. Ready to strike him if he did anything dangerous.

“My name is Jazmel.” He answered.

“What are you doing here?” the dwarf asked.

“I accidently came in. I fell into a river and when I woke up, I was here.” Jazmel confessed. The other dwarves began to mutter and whisper, he realised that they were speaking in their own language and that is why he could not recognise what they were saying.

“Where do you come from?” the dwarf asked, and Jazmel could tell he was trying to piece information together.

But before Jazmel could respond. The system spoke aloud, not for the first time for Jazmel. But for the first time for the dwarves, it would seem.
