Chapter 7: No Need To Hide
---
Ryuji looked up, and what met his gaze were eyes that seemed to see everything. Under these piercing eyes, it felt as though all his secrets were laid bare, leaving him feeling completely exposed.
"Is this... the Transparent World?"
He murmured inwardly.
In the state of the *Transparent World*, it was as if the body of any living being became transparent. One could clearly see the blood vessels and even the flow of blood within the opponent's body if they wished. In this state, one's senses were incredibly sharp.
Clearly, the days Ryuji had spent at the Kamado household had made Tanjuro Kamado suspicious. Even though Ryuji hadn't done anything overt, a person's heart always betrays certain emotions at certain moments. And Tanjuro had sensed these fluctuations.
Despite the thoughts swirling in Ryuji's mind, he quickly regained his composure and met Tanjuro's gaze. Under the intense scrutiny, Ryuji tightly held Tanjirou's hand and spoke earnestly:
"Tanjuro, don't worry. I will take care of your wife and children. As long as I'm here, no harm will come to them."
His voice was sincere, without a trace of deceit.
After meeting Kamado Kie for the first time, Ryuji had indeed harbored some inappropriate thoughts, but he didn't feel ashamed of them. After all, it was natural for someone to be drawn to beauty, and Kie was a beautiful and gentle woman.
It was normal to have fleeting thoughts like those.
But that was all it had ever been—just a brief thought. From the moment he had arrived until now, Ryuji had never acted indecently toward Kie Kamado.
More importantly, he truly did not want the Kamado family's future tragedy to unfold. Whether it was the cruel death of Kie at the hands of a demon, or the tragic transformation of Nezuko into a demon forced to endure the torment of hunger and isolation—he would not allow those things to happen.
Nor could he stand the idea of a woman like Kie being left to fend for herself after Tanjuro's passing.
"What matters most now is that you rest and focus on recovering. Who knows? You might get better, and then... I won't need to take care of your family."
Ryuji's voice softened.
Tanjuro continued to stare at him for a long time, as if he were trying to peer into Ryuji's very soul.
After what felt like an eternity, Tanjuro finally let out a deep sigh.
"Alright," Tanjuro said quietly. If his body could heal, he wouldn't hesitate to keep fighting. But these days, he had sensed something else in Ryuji. At first, there had been murderous intent; after all, he was nearing death, and the last thing he wanted was a man with hidden motives lingering around his family.
Yet, he had hesitated. He had chosen to observe instead of act.
He was dying. If Ryuji truly harbored malice, Tanjuro knew he wouldn't have the strength to resist.
But over time, he realized something else.
During these difficult days, Ryuji had genuinely helped him, tending to his wounds and taking care of his family. At first, Tanjuro thought it was all a façade, a deception.
But soon, even Tanjuro could not deny the truth.
Ryuji truly cared for his children, especially Nezuko, and his concern was genuine. That kind of affection couldn't be faked—not from someone with Tanjuro's heightened senses from the *Transparent World*.
Though Tanjuro could clearly sense that Ryuji's heart raced whenever he saw Kie and that he was somewhat unsettled by her presence, the young man always maintained respect and restraint. He had never acted dishonorably toward Kie.
As for Tanjuro himself, Ryuji had gone out of his way to find doctors, seek treatments, and do what he could to help him recover. Slowly, Tanjuro understood that Ryuji truly had the best interests of the Kamado family at heart. The young man really did care about his wife and children.
And so, Tanjuro let go of his initial murderous intent.
"I hope your words remain true," Tanjuro said softly, closing his eyes.
Ryuji hesitated, wanting to say more, but Tanjuro waved a hand.
"I want to rest for a while. You can go."
With no other choice, Ryuji left the room, guiding young Tanjirou with him.
As Ryuji turned to leave, Tanjuro opened his eyes again, watching Ryuji's retreating figure as he held Tanjirou's hand. Tanjuro's expression was complex.
If his health could improve, he would certainly drive Ryuji away to protect his wife from someone who harbored inappropriate thoughts. He would send him as far away as possible.
But now...
He wasn't sure if his body would recover. He just hoped that, after his death, someone would be there to protect his family.
Still... a small part of him couldn't help but feel a pang of resentment.
After all, his wife was so beautiful, and his children were so precious. He wanted to be there to see them grow.
But alas...
It wouldn't be long now.
---
After stepping out of the room and into the courtyard, the cold air outside jolted Ryuji out of his daze.
He hadn't expected Kamado Tanjuro to be so perceptive.
"As expected from the only ordinary person, besides members of the Demon Slayer Corps, to reach the 'Transparent World,'" Ryuji murmured to himself.
Although Tanjuro hadn't been particularly kind toward him, Ryuji couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
In that moment, he began to reflect on himself.
Perhaps knowing the future and understanding what was to come had instilled a sense of arrogance deep within him. He had started to look down on the people around him, subconsciously assuming they were beneath him.
It was inevitable that he would underestimate them.
He always felt like everything was under his control.
But he had forgotten one important truth: he was still weak, nothing more than an ordinary person, without any real strength to surpass others.
At the very least...
With his current power, he had no right to look down on or underestimate anyone.
Thankfully, Kamado Tanjuro hadn't meant him harm. If Tanjuro had wanted to kill him, no matter how frail he appeared, Ryuji would have been a fool to underestimate him.
Even though Tanjuro had never formally trained in swordsmanship, his ability to awaken the Demon Slayer Mark and reach the pinnacle of the Transparent World, even in his dying state, meant his strength was nothing Ryuji could resist.
In fact...
Ryuji realized that Tanjuro could have killed him in an instant if he had wanted to, and Ryuji wouldn't have been able to fight back at all.
"Hah... hah..."
Ryuji exhaled slowly, reminding himself that he only had one life.
If he died now...
He'd really be dead.
There wouldn't be any second chances.
In his current state, it was better to remain cautious.
However...
Now that his confrontation with Kamado Tanjuro was over, Ryuji felt a sense of relief.
Perhaps it was the lingering guilt he harbored for his feelings toward Kie Kamado, but whenever he faced Tanjuro, a heaviness weighed on his chest.
That guilt had left him feeling stifled for some time.
But now, with everything out in the open, he no longer felt as burdened by it.
After all, in this era, losing Tanjuro would leave the Kamado family without its pillar, leaving a frail woman to take care of so many children. It would be a struggle for them to survive.
In the anime, after Kamado Tanjuro's death, the Kamado family was barely able to scrape by.
So...
If Ryuji chose to take care of Kie Kamado after Tanjuro passed, he wouldn't need to feel guilty. In fact, given the hardships of the time, most people would avoid taking on such a burden—raising so many children who couldn't contribute much.
In the end, while he might not be able to provide them a life of luxury, he certainly wouldn't let them suffer the way they had in the anime.
In that sense, he was doing something good for the Kamado family.
If the people around him knew, they might even call him a hero for stepping up.
Of course, Ryuji knew his true intentions.
Even if he was attracted to Kie Kamado, what harm was there in that?
She was beautiful and young, and with her husband nearing death, what was wrong with his thoughts?
As these thoughts crossed his mind, Ryuji's attention shifted to the courtyard.
There, he spotted Kie struggling to carry a bucket of water toward the kitchen.
Even though she wore simple, modest clothing, her figure was hard to miss.
Her loose garments did little to hide the full curves of her body, especially around her chest, where the fabric clung tightly despite its otherwise loose fit.
In the past, Ryuji would always avert his eyes when he saw her, avoiding her out of guilt, especially with Tanjuro nearby.
But now, after his conversation with Tanjuro...
He didn't need to hide his thoughts anymore.
After all, Tanjuro knew exactly what was on his mind, and if he had already accepted it, what reason did Ryuji have to feel guilty?
With his guilt fading away, Ryuji allowed his gaze to boldly roam over Kie's figure.
Perhaps because of his presence and the sense of security he brought to the Kamado family, Kie's complexion had improved. Her once pale and weary face now had a healthy flush, and her exposed skin looked soft and smooth, glowing with vitality.
In truth, he had taken better care of her than Tanjuro ever could.
For instance, Tanjuro had never helped with household chores, nor did he step foot in the kitchen.
But Ryuji...
Occasionally, he would help with some kitchen tasks and even cooked from time to time.
With these thoughts filling his mind...
He found himself walking toward Kie Kamado, unable to resist the pull of her presence.
