Chapter 25: Chapter 26: The Pitiful Often Have Their Own Despicable Side
When Feng Yu and Xiao Bai returned to the town, he discovered that the lively town, which should have been bustling, remained as eerily quiet as before.
"What's going on? Hasn't the Blood Demon Curse of Hua Zhizi been lifted? Where have all the townspeople gone?" Feng Yu wondered aloud.
Just as he pondered, an elderly voice called out to him.
"Young man, can you give this old woman a hand? I'm going to throw eggs at that scoundrel!"
Feng Yu turned to see an old woman, leaning on a cane, trembling like a flickering candle in the wind, one strong gust away from toppling.
"Grandmother, what is it?" Feng Yu asked, steadying her.
"Young man, you're from out of town, right? It's lucky you arrived today, or you might have been eaten by the monsters…"
With these words, Feng Yu understood. After Hua Zhizi's Blood Demon Curse had been lifted, the townspeople had regained their senses and now sought to take revenge on someone.
"Grandmother, where are they?"
"They've all gone to the town square," the old woman replied, her face hardening with anger. "I can't move easily now because of my age, but I still want to see that scoundrel get what he deserves."
Feng Yu had a strong suspicion as to who she meant. He helped the old woman to the square.
"Kill him!"
"We should have killed him years ago!"
"This scoundrel! He colluded with monsters to harm us! Kill him!"
The entire town had gathered at the square. In the center, kneeling, was the leader of the Hua Shen organization from before.
The crowd jeered and threw rotten vegetables and foul-smelling eggs at him.
The man kept his head down, silent, his body tightly bound.
"Silence!"
"Yamato Yoichi, do you have anything to say?" A man standing beside Yamato Yoichi spoke up.
"Hahaha, what do I have to say? It's ridiculous! I wish I could kill all of you!" Yamato Yoichi laughed maniacally.
"I hate all of you. I hate this world! Why was I born so ugly, so poor?"
"All of you despise me, loathe me. Every day, you wish I were dead…"
"But on the other hand, I wish all of you would die!"
Yamato Yoichi continued to rant. His face, covered in purple boils and sores, looked grotesque and terrifying, like a living corpse.
"Why do you all get to wear fine clothes and eat well, while I live like a dog? I am so jealous of you all. This world is so unfair!"
He shouted, rage evident in his voice.
"You're talking nonsense! What have we done to deserve that from you? On the contrary, we've helped you, giving you food and clothes!"
"You're ungrateful! You've repaid kindness with cruelty!"
"Hahaha! That's your idea of help? You just give me the scraps meant for animals! You throw me your old clothes. Is that help?!"
Yamato Yoichi roared.
"I wish I could kill all of you, drink your blood, skin you alive, tear your muscles from your bones!"
"Fortunately, I met Lord Hua Shen! She is so beautiful, so understanding. She gave me the strength to kill all of you! Hahaha!"
"You filthy worms, you deserve to be blood sacrifices to Lord Hua Shen!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the crowd couldn't remain calm any longer. Even the old woman Feng Yu was helping began to tremble with rage, throwing rotten eggs at Yamato Yoichi.
Feng Yu noticed the boy and his father standing at the edge of the square. Unlike the others, they didn't join in the crowd's violence.
"Father, that's the big brother…" the boy whispered to his father.
The father looked up and their eyes met. Feng Yu gave a slight nod and then turned his attention elsewhere.
In the end, Yamato Yoichi was covered in wounds, his hands and feet broken from the beating, blood pouring from his mouth.
"I didn't do anything wrong… I didn't do anything wrong… It's all your fault…" he muttered weakly.
"Such a pathetic man, yet without any remorse. Truly, the pitiful often have their own despicable side…" Feng Yu remarked, watching the nearly lifeless Yamato Yoichi.
Soon, the local constables arrived and took Yamato Yoichi away. It was clear they knew that if the townspeople didn't get a chance to vent their anger, the unrest would never subside.
At least this way, they had relieved their fury without becoming murderers themselves.
"It's over. Xiao Bai, let's go," Feng Yu said, picking up Xiao Bai.
What he didn't know was that for a long time afterward, no flowers would be seen blooming in this town.
Just as Feng Yu prepared to leave, someone called out to him.
It was a constable from the local police station.
"Mr. Feng Yu, we must thank you for getting rid of the monster. You've helped us regain our freedom."
"Please, let us thank you properly for a few days!" The chief of the constable spoke respectfully.
Feng Yu paused for a moment, then nodded in agreement.
He was soon settled into the town's best inn.
"Ah~"
"This hot spring is so relaxing…" Feng Yu sighed in contentment as he soaked in the warm water.
Various fruits and drinks were placed nearby.
"Ah, the life of the rich is truly extravagant…"
"But… I like it."
Gradually, Feng Yu let himself fully indulge in the comfort. After all, the hot springs of this small island nation were known for their quality.
At first, the innkeeper had wanted to assign several maids to attend to Feng Yu, but he had declined them all, explaining simply that he hadn't yet adapted to the open hot spring culture of this island.
Feng Yu spent three full days in the town, experiencing the true luxury lifestyle.
Yet, after packing up his things, he sneaked away when no one was looking.
Over the past three days, rumors of his role in saving the townspeople had spread, and soon many began visiting him. Some wanted to become his disciples, others sought to befriend him, and some even offered to marry their daughters to him.
Feng Yu knew it was time to leave.
The indulgent lifestyle had caused his knife training sessions to dwindle.
"Ah… ah… Lord Feng Yu, there's a report of possible Demon sightings in the Western Forest. Please go immediately!"
Xiao Hei landed on Feng Yu's shoulder, with Xiao Bai by his side. The two of them, black and white, made quite the pair.
Just the day before, Feng Yu had taught Xiao Hei the Beast Breathing Technique. However, Xiao Hei's aptitude was inferior to Xiao Bai's, and it had taken all of his remaining chances to finally master it.
Under Xiao Bai's guidance, Xiao Hei also learned to control his size, transforming from a huge beast into a more manageable size. Though smaller, his body now bristled with power.
With his growing intelligence, Xiao Hei had fully become Xiao Bai's sidekick, following him around eagerly as he learned the breathing technique.
"How about… we try flying this time?" Feng Yu glanced at Xiao Hei.
Xiao Hei: "…"
