Chapter 11: Chapter 12: Tanjiro's Awakening
On the other side, Tanjiro bought a basket from some nearby villagers and carried Nezuko to the entrance of a shrine.
"Nezuko, there's a shrine here, and I can see lights inside. There must be someone in there. Let's go check it out," Tanjiro gently said, holding Nezuko's hand.
But in an instant, Tanjiro caught a strong scent of blood.
"Ah... that's the smell of blood..." he muttered.
"The mountain roads are rough; maybe someone's hurt," he added.
Tanjiro quickly pulled Nezuko along as they ran toward the shrine.
"Is everything alright?" Tanjiro shouted as he threw open the door.
The moment he opened the door, Tanjiro froze, his eyes wide in shock.
There were no injured people inside. Instead, the scene before him was nothing short of a slaughterhouse.
The shrine was covered in blood, and a whole family had been slaughtered.
His basket dropped to the floor, startling the demon who was eating.
"What's going on?" the demon slowly said, its voice dripping with malice.
"This is my turf. If you dare interfere with my meal, I'll make you regret it."
The demon glared fiercely at the two siblings.
Tanjiro's face drained of color as he murmured, "A cannibal demon…"
Nezuko, standing beside him, seemed stunned, her gaze fixed firmly on the bodies in front of her.
The air was thick with the scent of blood, which triggered a deep, primal hunger in Nezuko.
Her demonic instincts surged, and she began to struggle, saliva dripping from the bamboo stick clenched in her mouth.
The demon noticed this and, licking its blood-covered hand, murmured, "Something's off…"
"Are you human?" it asked.
The demon stood up.
Tanjiro took a step back, his body tense with caution.
Bang!
Tanjiro was sent flying, but he quickly blocked the demon's attack with the axe in his hand.
At the same moment, he counterattacked, swinging his axe at the demon.
But the result was minimal; the demon's wound healed almost instantly.
The demon touched the wound and grinned. "An axe, huh? You've got some skill…"
"But it's just a small wound. I'll heal in no time."
And just like that, the wound disappeared.
"See? The blood's already stopped, and the wound is gone," the demon smirked.
Tanjiro's heart raced as he stared in horror at the demon's terrifying regenerative ability.
Meanwhile, Nezuko was still fixated on the human bodies in the shrine, her struggle intensifying as the bloodlust within her threatened to take over.
She bit down hard on the bamboo stick, clenching her fists, sweat pouring down her face.
Tanjiro tried to stand, but the demon, moving with incredible speed, slammed him back to the ground, choking him with terrifying strength.
"So fast… and so strong…" Tanjiro gasped, struggling to speak.
The demon glared at Tanjiro, its voice venomous: "You won't get another chance to hurt me. I'll snap your neck!"
Tanjiro found himself in a perilous situation.
Just as things seemed to spiral out of control, Tanjiro screamed in pain, jolting Nezuko at the shrine's entrance.
Her rationality returned in an instant.
Bang!
Nezuko kicked the demon's head off, sending it flying into a nearby tree.
Tanjiro, witnessing the decapitated body of the demon, was stunned, his fear amplifying as he quickly pushed the body away.
He looked at Nezuko in disbelief, whispering, "You... you killed it…"
"No… wait, it's a demon… Nezuko…"
Before Tanjiro could finish, the headless demon's body lunged at him. Nezuko, seeing this, kicked the body away once more.
"This is unbelievable... it moved... even without a head!" Tanjiro thought in shock.
"You two…" the demon's head spoke.
"So one of you is a demon, huh? No wonder it felt strange. Why are a demon and a human together?" it sneered.
"Damn, it's still talking!" Tanjiro yelled.
At that moment, the demon's decapitated body lunged at Nezuko. Tanjiro grabbed an axe and shouted, "Stop!"
He rushed to intervene, but the demon's head, now growing tiny hands, attacked Tanjiro with surprising speed.
Tanjiro quickly reacted, swinging his axe at the head.
The demon opened its massive mouth, its sharp teeth clamping down on the axe.
Meanwhile, Nezuko, unable to fend off the demon's body, fell to the ground. The demon's body relentlessly kicked her, each strike causing her to cry out in pain.
The demon then grabbed Nezuko and tossed her into the dark forest.
Tanjiro tried to rush to her aid, but the demon's head had, inexplicably, wrapped its new hands around his hair, restraining him.
"What is going on with this thing? It grew hands?" Tanjiro thought, confused. But all he cared about now was rescuing Nezuko.
"Let go! I need to save Nezuko!" he cried, struggling.
With a powerful yell, he slammed his head into the demon's skull.
The demon recoiled in pain, and Tanjiro used the opportunity to bash its head again, causing it to stagger.
"That head is tough…" Tanjiro thought.
He quickly grabbed the demon's head, using it to slam into the ground with all his might.
For a moment, the demon seemed flustered.
Tanjiro seized the chance and swung the axe at a large tree, embedding it into the trunk with a loud thunk.
Seeing that the demon's head was now immobile, Tanjiro dashed toward Nezuko.
"I tried to entangle its hair with the axe... but I couldn't untangle it… damn it!" the demon's head groaned in frustration.
In the forest, Nezuko had been viciously attacked by the demon's body, helpless against its onslaught.
Tanjiro's heart pounded as he called out for her.
"Nezuko! Where are you?"
With his keen sense of smell, Tanjiro quickly located her, battered and bruised, at the hands of the demon.
"Nezuko!" he shouted.
He rushed forward, but the force of his charge sent him careening toward a cliff.
Just as it seemed he would fall over the edge with the demon's body, two hands gripped Tanjiro tightly from behind.
It was Feng Yu, who had arrived just in time.
With a firm pull, Feng Yu lifted Tanjiro to safety.
Nezuko eyed Feng Yu warily, still surprised by how fast he had been.
The demon's body tumbled off the cliff.
Its head seemed to sense this, letting out a final scream before falling unconscious.
"Are you alright?" Feng Yu asked, smiling.
"You... who are you?" Tanjiro asked, still trying to catch his breath.
"I'm Giyu Tomioka's junior. I've come to pick you up. Sorry I'm late," Feng Yu explained.
Tanjiro let out a sigh of relief upon hearing this.
He quickly ran over to Nezuko, lifting her gently into his arms and tenderly wiping her wounds.
"Are you okay, Nezuko?"
Feng Yu looked at the siblings, a soft smile on his face. "Such deep sibling love…"
He seemed to have remembered something and, from his system space, pulled out two healing pills.
"Take one each. They'll help with your injuries," Feng Yu said.
Though he knew that Nezuko, being a demon, would heal quickly, he still gave them the pills to avoid raising Tanjiro's suspicions.
"What's this?" Tanjiro asked, eyeing the pale green pills with curiosity.
The pills emitted a faint medicinal fragrance, clearly precious.
Tanjiro hesitated, but Feng Yu urged him to take them quickly.
Tanjiro swallowed the pill, feeling his injuries begin to heal almost instantly.
He then gave one to Nezuko.
As soon as the pill entered her mouth, Nezuko's eyes widened in apparent satisfaction, and she stared at Feng Yu, almost as if asking for more.
Feng Yu, amused by her adorableness, took out another healing pill from his space and gave it to her.
With everything settled, the group made their way to the decapitated demon's head.
Feng Yu spoke with a serious tone, "Go ahead and kill him."
At first, Feng Yu hadn't wanted to do this, but he remembered something from his past life and decided to follow through.
Tanjiro hesitated, trembling as he looked at the demon's head, a small knife in his hands.
"Do I have to kill it…? Just do it," he murmured, struggling to breathe.
Feng Yu sighed, watching Tanjiro with a mix of admiration and frustration.
Though Tanjiro was known for his gentle nature, especially toward demons, this kindness often became his greatest weakness.
Seeing Tanjiro's hesitation, Feng Yu spoke again, "You won't be able to kill him this way…"
"Then… how do I kill him?" Tanjiro asked, looking desperate.
"Don't ask me. Figure it out yourself," Feng Yu said, sitting back and watching.
Tanjiro thought for a moment, then picked up a large stone from beside him. He murmured to himself, "Since the knife can't kill it, I'll crush its head with this. But... that would cause so much pain. Is there nothing that could end it quickly?"
Time passed, but Tanjiro still couldn't bring himself to act.
At that moment, the unconscious demon stirred.
It began to wildly wave its arms, trying to attack Tanjiro.
But then, the sunlight of dawn slowly rose, and as the first rays touched the demon, it began to writhe in pain, turning into ash.
"Ding! Congratulations, you have gained +50,000 sword swings."
"Hmm? This is fewer than before…"
Tanjiro stood there, mouth open in shock. Then he seemed to realize something and quickly ran to find his sister.
However, Nezuko had already been taken inside the house by Feng Yu to avoid the sunlight.
As the morning sun touched his face, the chilling darkness melted away, and the evil forces hidden in the shadows seemed to vanish completely.
Feng Yu seemed to be moved by something, but his emotions quickly faded.
"Come with me. Bring your sister," he said to Tanjiro.
"The demons fear sunlight. Once it touches them, they turn to ash, like you just saw."
Tanjiro nodded, understanding.
He hurried back to where Nezuko was, placing her in the basket and covering it with cloth to shield her from the sun.
With that, Feng Yu led Tanjiro back to the Sagiri mountain.
