Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Swordsmith Arrives
At the foot of Mount Sagiri, inside the small hut:
"The details of the Final Selection are roughly like this," Zhou Yi said, recounting the events to his master.
Hearing that the Disaster Ward Mask he had specially gifted his disciples had been the key factor in his disciples' deaths, Urokodaki Sakonji sat by the fire, unable to calm his troubled heart.
"So, it was him... I didn't expect this…"
"Master, please don't blame yourself. No one could have known that demon was still alive. Besides, look, we made it back, didn't we?" Makomo quickly comforted him.
"…Yes, you're right."
---
A week later, their brief period of peace was interrupted by the arrival of a swordsmith. The man wore a straw hat and a mask covering his face.
Urokodaki seemed to recognize the visitor and promptly invited him into the house.
The four of them sat across from one another. Zhou Yi and Makomo on one side, Urokodaki and the swordsmith on the other. The swordsmith carried two boxes, one long and one short, on his back.
"You are Zhou Yi and Makomo?"
The two nodded.
"Yes, that's us. Have our Nichirin Blades been completed?"
"Already? That was quick!" Makomo exclaimed.
The swordsmith, Hotaru Haganezuka, nodded.
"Makomo's blade was relatively easy to forge. Zhou Yi's request, on the other hand, took a bit more effort. It delayed me slightly."
Hearing this, Urokodaki's curiosity was piqued. This was the first time he had heard a swordsmith admit to being challenged by a request.
"Haganezuka, what kind of request could trouble you so much?"
Haganezuka didn't answer immediately. Instead, he placed the two boxes on the floor and gestured to them.
"Why don't you see for yourselves?"
He opened the shorter box first. While relatively short compared to the two-meter-long box beside it, the shorter box was still quite substantial.
Inside was a relatively standard Nichirin Blade. Its tsuba was a deep forest green, and the blade itself was thinner and lighter than most standard blades.
"This is Makomo's Nichirin Blade. Try it out," Haganezuka said, pushing the box toward her.
Makomo's eyes lit up as she carefully lifted the blade, gripping it tightly.
The feel of this blade was completely different from her old one.
"It feels like it was custom-made just for me! Incredible!" Makomo praised wholeheartedly, admiration evident in her voice.
Haganezuka tilted his head slightly, a faint smile under his mask. He was confident in his craftsmanship.
"There's more! Look at the blade itself," he added.
Zhou Yi and Makomo both focused their attention on the sword's blade.
Initially, it was the usual silver-white of steel. But as they watched, the color began to change. Starting from the hilt, it was as if drops of ink were dissolving in water, spreading a deep green hue along the blade.
"It's forest green! It matches your hair beautifully!" Zhou Yi exclaimed, aware that Nichirin Blades took on unique colors. Makomo's blade was particularly striking.
Caught off guard by her junior's compliment, Makomo's face flushed. "Stop saying such things... I—"
Meanwhile, Haganezuka looked skeptically at Urokodaki, as though seeking confirmation.
Urokodaki nodded solemnly, silently indicating: Yes, it's exactly as you think.
"He's only 12 years old! And yet! And yet!"
Not knowing Zhou Yi's exact age, Haganezuka was thrown into chaos, repeatedly pounding the floor in disbelief.
Inside the room, the three—a master and his two disciples—reacted differently: one of them was bashfully silent, while the other two completely ignored Haganezuka's anguished outburst.
---
"The Nichirin Blade is a color-changing weapon. Its color shifts depending on its wielder."
"A dark green one is indeed quite rare. Zhou Yi, let us see your Nichirin Blade."
Urokodaki Sakonji showed even more interest in Zhou Yi's blade.
Zhou Yi nodded and opened the lid of the box.
"What a unique design!"
This was the first time Urokodaki Sakonji had seen such a long blade.
"Five feet long (about 1.5 meters), with the guard removed, leaving only the sword hilt." Zhou Yi held the sword in his right hand, laying it flat on his knees.
"Rather than calling it a blade, it would be more accurate to call it a sword. From now on, let's name it Mokkan Chou(The Veiled Weapon)." Zhou Yi's left hand gently brushed along the sword's blade, deciding on its name.
After Zhou Yi spoke the name, Mokkan Chou(The Veiled Weapon) emitted a faint vibration.
"Seems like you like the name too."
As before, Zhou Yi's sword shifted in color again, but unlike the typical Nichirin Blades, its blade didn't turn silver or red. Instead, it became completely transparent!
"A colorless blade? This is the color?"
Seeing the color-changing Mokkan Chou(The Veiled Weapon) in Zhou Yi's hands, Haganezuka was left in shock.
He eagerly rushed over to examine the Nichirin Blade he had personally crafted, his fondness for the weapon evident despite his mask.
"A colorless blade? What does that mean?" Makomo, having recovered from her surprise, asked curiously.
Urokodaki Sakonji provided the answer.
"Every blade has a spirit. A colorless blade is one whose edge cannot be seen by the naked eye."
"In other words, it is an invisible blade."
Zhou Yi's face twitched slightly.
"Damn it, I'm not like Artoria! I can't use some Wind King Barrier! How did my sword turn transparent?!"
He could only grumble inwardly, though he actually quite liked the transparent Mokkan Chou(The Veiled Weapon).
"Indeed, an Assassin class should use such a tricky weapon!"
Sasaki Kojirou, another figure from the Assassin class, was known for his stealth and surprise attacks.
"That's incredible!" Makomo was genuinely happy for her junior.
"Unpredictable, capable of striking invisible—this gives you a huge advantage when first encountering an enemy," Urokodaki Sakonji agreed with his disciple's assessment.
"Weapons are ultimately external tools. When it comes to slaying demons, it's still up to you." Zhou Yi wasn't overly excited. To him, it was just another weapon.
"Hmm, not bad. You have the right mindset for someone your age. I have high hopes for you!" Haganezuka praised Zhou Yi's composure.
[Ding] Suitable weapon detected. Do you confirm it as your personal sword?
"What does that mean?"
You can infuse the concept of Mokkan Chou(The Veiled Weapon) into this blade, solidifying its nature. This means it will never break and will always remain sharp.
Such a thing is possible?
"Confirm!"
Received. Converting…
Conversion successful!
Zhou Yi looked at the blade in his hand with some emotion. "From now on, you are truly Mokkan Chou(The Veiled Weapon)! Don't disgrace this name!"
The sword hummed in response.
"Alright, my task is done! I'll take my leave now."
Having witnessed the legendary colorless blade, Haganezuka was satisfied and ready to leave.
Urokodaki Sakonji, understanding the other's busy schedule, didn't try to stop him.
The three watched as Haganezuka left, only offering a simple reminder: "Be careful on your way!"
Haganezuka didn't turn around, only waving a hand in acknowledgment.
"Haganezuka-sensei truly is a master of sword forging!" Makomo naturally hooked her arm through Zhou Yi's, a gesture of admiration.
Zhou Yi, accustomed to it, nodded in agreement.
Urokodaki Sakonji, watching them, said nothing.
At that moment, two crows flew into the room.
"Zhou Yi! Zhou Yi! The master has issued an order! Head to the northern island of Hachijojima!"
"Makomo! Makomo! The master has issued an order! Head to Takinogawa Village in the west!"
A mission was given.
Zhou Yi and Makomo looked at their master in unison.
"Master!"
"Hmm, go ahead. It's time for me to take on new disciples."
"Take care of yourself, master."
