Chapter 21: Chapter no.21: The Blind Leading The Blind

Inside the nondescript van parked discreetly a few blocks from the Tokyo Detention Centre, Takashi was surrounded by a small fortress of technology. The van's interior was a stark contrast to its unassuming exterior—monitors flickered with streams of data, a sophisticated setup that would look at home in a high-tech surveillance center. Each screen served a specific purpose: one displayed a live feed from the camera embedded in Rika's glasses, offering Takashi a first-person view of the interview; another showed a complex array of biometric readings.

Takashi's eyes were primarily fixed on the monitor displaying Rika's biometrics. He monitored her pulse through an advanced biometric wristband she wore, which relayed real-time data to his setup. The technology was sensitive enough to pick up even the slightest fluctuation in her heart rate, a critical tool in assessing her stress levels and overall emotional state.

He knew that emotions could run high in their line of work, even for seasoned operatives like Rika. It was his job to ensure she remained in control and to intervene if the situation escalated beyond their predictions.

Takashi adjusted the volume on his headset, ensuring he could hear every nuance of the conversation between Rika and Shoko.

"I am well aware of who you are… Rika."

As Shoko pronounced Rika's name with unsettling familiarity, Takashi felt a sudden tension grip his jaw, the muscles tightening involuntarily.

How does Shoko know her?

The question reverberated through his mind, echoing against his fears. He pressed the button on his microphone, his voice perhaps betraying a hint of his own fear as he tried to steady Rika, "Rika, calm yourself." The irony of his words didn't escape him—he was far from calm himself.

The possibility that Rika's theory about the doomsday cult having infiltrated the government suddenly seemed less like a conspiracy and more like a chilling reality. Shoko wasn't just incarcerated; he was, in some twisted way, still in control—or so it seemed.

But why reveal this now? Why to Rika? Takashi's thoughts churned with these questions.

Shoko's next words, "Yes, Mrs. Rika, calm is good, listen to that friend of yours," came through the earpiece with a calm that felt almost mocking. It was as if Shoko was not just speaking to Rika, but directly to Takashi as well, aware of his hidden presence. The realization hit Takashi like a bucket of cold water, shocking his system and rendering his mind momentarily blank. A chill ran down his spine, and he felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead.

His mind was a whirl of confusion and alarm, struggling to piece together the implications of this encounter. Just as he began to process the magnitude of what was happening, Rika's sudden scream of "Run!" into her microphone jolted him back to the immediate crisis.

Takashi dove to the floor of the van, his instincts kicking in as he prepared for a potential attack. His hands reached for the sonar device he had rigged together—a piece of equipment he was secretly quite proud of.

I call this Sonar; Milfs-In-My-Area machine, he thought wryly.

The joke momentarily lightened the heavy atmosphere, providing a brief distraction as he scanned the sonar readout.

Peering at the screen, Takashi noted with a mix of relief and confusion that no one was approaching the van. Strange, then why would Shoko say that… Was his goal Rika?

Increasing the volume on his monitoring equipment, Takashi listened intently for any sounds of struggle or movement. However, all he was met with was silence—a sudden, eerie stillness that seemed to thicken the air around him. "Rika?" he whispered into the earpiece, his voice barely a breath, hoping for any sign of response.

Turning his attention to the van's monitors, Takashi checked Rika's biometrics, which were being tracked for safety. The readouts were unusual: her heart rate was elevated yet steady, her breathing was shallow and regular, and her overall body activity suggested she was neither fighting nor fleeing but was rather in a state akin to a trance.

Takashi's brow furrowed as he considered the possibilities. Was it a trap? Did Shoko somehow drug Rika's drinks? No, Rika hadn't ingested anything since they arrived. So what then? He ran through every scenario he could think of, each more unlikely than the last.

The questions multiplied in his mind.

What was happening inside that room? What was Shoko's end goal?

His hands hovered over the controls, ready to initiate a more invasive scan or to burst into the room if it became necessary. Every second was critical, and the lack of clarity only compounded the urgency of the moment.

He knew he had to remain calm and collected, despite the chaos that seemed to be unfolding.

"Beautiful, isn't it," Shoko's voice floated through, now unbound by the acoustics of the interrogation room. It was as if he and Rika were no longer in a detention center but somewhere far removed from reality.

"What is going on?" Takashi muttered to himself, gripping the door handle. He was torn between bursting in to check on Rika and staying put to maintain their tactical advantage.

Rika stood in the surreal field of reeds, her firearm aimed at Shoko, knowing well it might be futile yet clinging to it as a symbol of control. The illusion of power it provided was thin, but it was all she had in the face of such inexplicable circumstances.

"What do you want?"

"It's been a long time since I talked to a woman," Shoko remarked casually, his tone unsettling in its nonchalance.

"I could tell."

Shoko smiled thinly and gestured expansively with his hand. The field of reeds melted away, transforming into a vivid scene of a lake where a gazelle was quietly drinking. Moments later, an alligator burst from the water, clamping onto the gazelle's neck in a startling display of primal violence. The gazelle struggled fiercely, refusing to succumb to the death roll, its determination palpable even in this illusory display.

"Such beautiful creatures, even in the face of certain death, it will fight," Shoko remarked, his voice carrying a tone of admiration that felt disturbingly genuine.

"What's the point?"

Without answering, Shoko motioned to the lake again. This time, a human child appeared at the water's edge, the scenario replaying but with a chilling difference: the child offered no resistance, easily overpowered by the alligator. The vision shifted rapidly, the child morphing into a teen, then an adult, each version of the human succumbing without a fight. None could withstand the alligator's assault.

Without responding, Shoko waved his hand again over the lake. This time, a human child appeared in the same scenario. The alligator repeated its savage attack, and unlike the gazelle, the child did not survive the initial assault. The scene shifted rapidly, the child morphing into a teenager and then an adult, each version of Kozen.

None stood a chance; each was effortlessly overpowered by the alligator.

The visceral sequence shook Rika to her core.

Without thinking, she fired her gun at Shoko, driven by a mix of fear, anger, and desperation. But the bullet stopped mid-air, inches from him, as if suspended by an invisible force.

"Without those weapons, humanity is nothing. We don't have claws, or scales, or the muscles that so many predators have… Humanity is so fragile," Shoko said, his words echoing ominously in the surreal landscape.

Rika's hand trembled as she lowered her gun slightly, the reality of her powerlessness settling in.

"Did you get these views from your school?"

Shoko's smile widened, a disturbing glint in his eyes as he replied, "Ah, the school," his voice taking on a wistful yet ominous tone. "A place where I learned much about perception and reality." He gestured, and the illusion shifted dramatically, the tranquil field morphing into a dim, echoic classroom filled with blind children.

Rika watched as a younger Shoko appeared among them, his presence almost messianic. He moved with an eerie grace, leading the blind children around, his partial sight making him a king in a kingdom of the blind. "I was their eyes," Shoko narrated, his voice dripping with a mix of fondness and superiority. "They believed everything I told them—because to them, I could see everything they couldn't."

As the children nodded and smiled up at the younger Shoko in the illusion, he continued, "This is humanity, Rika. Blind, desperate for direction, for a vision. They need a savior. They need me, for I am the only one who can truly see."

Rika felt a chill run down her spine, Shoko's delusions laying bare before her. "You're insane," she blurted out, the words sharper than she intended, her voice echoing strangely in the illusion. "The one who is blind is you."

The moment the words left her mouth, Rika felt a sharp, excruciating pain in her eyes, as if shards of glass were piercing through them. She gasped, clutching her face, her fingers scraping at her skin which felt as though it was bubbling and shifting beneath her touch. Her heart pounded in her chest, terror gripping her as she wondered if Shoko had somehow made her blind or disfigured her face permanently.

"What just happened?" Rika thought frantically, her mind racing to understand if this was another layer of Shoko's illusion or a cruel physical punishment for her defiance. Fear tightened around her throat like a noose as she struggled to maintain her composure.

Then, just as quickly as it had started, the sensation vanished. Rika found herself back in the field of reeds, untouched, her face normal. She touched her cheeks, her eyes wide with disbelief and relief flooding through her as she realized she was unharmed.

"Why? Why show me this?" Rika demanded, her voice shaking as she stared at Shoko, who looked back at her with an unnerving calm.

"To teach you about reality," Shoko replied smoothly, his tone chillingly serene. "To show you that what you perceive as control is but an illusion. Humanity clings to its senses, to its weapons, but without them, you are as vulnerable as a child in the dark."
