The Setup
The air in Gotham's backstreets was thick with tension—the kind that clung to the skin like a cold sweat. It was the kind of night where danger lurked in the alleys, where every shadow felt like a pair of watching eyes.
Alex Kent stood motionless under a flickering streetlight, his face neutral, his mind calculating. He wasn't here to fight—not with brute strength, and certainly not with his Beyonder abilities.
Tonight, he was just a man.
A man who had walked into the lion's den.
Joker stood at the far end of the alley, grinning like a man who already knew the punchline to a joke no one else had caught onto yet.
"Ohhh, I do love this part," the Clown Prince of Crime cooed, twirling a butterfly knife between his gloved fingers. His purple suit shimmered under the dim light, his wide green eyes locked onto Alex with an unsettling amusement. "The moment before someone makes a terrible decision."
His smile widened, stretching his lips unnaturally. "So tell me, kid, what's it gonna be? Work for me, or become a fine, fine piece of abstract street art?"
Around them, Joker's goons tightened their grip on their weapons. Guns, knives, even blunt objects—they had come prepared.
Alex didn't move, though his fingers rested lightly on a hidden device at his waist.
He had accounted for many possibilities before coming here.
But this? This was worse than expected.
Joker wasn't just testing him—he was cornering him.
And that meant Alex had to think fast.
The Gambit
"Not interested," Alex said flatly, his tone void of fear.
Joker pouted dramatically. "Oh, you wound me! And here I was, being all nice! Gave you a chance, a way out—but nooo, you wanna be difficult."
He let out a sigh, rolling his shoulders before snapping his fingers.
Immediately, the thugs surged forward.
Alex moved first.
His left hand twitched, dropping a small metallic orb to the ground. The moment it made contact, it erupted into a blinding flash of light.
BANG.
The concussive force sent Joker's men stumbling, some cursing, others dropping their weapons as they clutched at their eyes.
Alex didn't waste a second.
He tapped his belt, activating a retractable grappling line built into his coat. The moment it shot upward and latched onto a fire escape, he yanked himself off the ground just as a gunshot rang out below.
The bullet missed him by inches.
Alex landed smoothly on the rooftop, already sprinting toward the next building. He needed to get out of Joker's range before—
A laugh echoed from below.
"Ohhh, I like you, kid! You've got style!" Joker called, his voice carrying eerily well through the city night. "But tell me—how are you gonna run from this?"
Alex barely had time to react before he heard the unmistakable whoosh of a rocket-propelled grenade being fired.
The Dark Knight Arrives
There was a blur of movement.
A sharp metallic clang.
And suddenly, the RPG veered off-course mid-air, detonating harmlessly against a nearby abandoned billboard.
Smoke and debris rained down.
Then, silence.
Alex turned, his instincts on high alert.
Joker's men hesitated below, their eyes darting around in confusion.
Joker himself? He just grinned wider.
"Ohhhh," he practically purred. "He's here, isn't he?"
A gust of wind brushed past Alex as a dark figure landed behind him on the rooftop.
Batman.
The Dark Knight Enters
Alex didn't move as the caped figure rose to his full height, his silhouette cutting an imposing figure against the Gotham skyline.
Even from behind, Alex could feel the weight of Batman's presence—the sheer intensity of his gaze, the quiet but unmistakable calculation behind it.
Down below, Joker clapped his hands in mock delight.
"Bats! You always know how to make an entrance! You sure you're not stealing my bit?"
Batman didn't respond immediately. His eyes flicked toward Alex, assessing, before shifting back to Joker.
"Let him go," Batman said, his voice like gravel and authority woven together.
Joker sighed dramatically. "Oh, come on, Bats! Don't you see what I'm trying to do here? I'm nurturing talent! I mean, this one?" He gestured wildly toward Alex. "Oh, he's got potential! The right kind of potential! Wouldn't want that to go to waste, now would we?"
Batman took a slow step forward. "I won't say it again."
Joker giggled. "Oh, I know, I know! You never do. But tell you what—since you asked so nicely..." He waved a hand. "Boys? Let's pack it up. I hate overstaying my welcome."
Joker's men hesitated, then started backing away into the darkness.
Joker winked up at Alex. "See ya around, kid. Don't be a stranger."
And just like that, he was gone.
A Silent Understanding
For a few long seconds, neither Alex nor Batman moved.
Then—
"You're not one of Joker's men," Batman said at last, his tone neutral but edged with curiosity.
Alex exhaled slowly, keeping his expression unreadable. "No."
Batman studied him for a moment. Then: "You used advanced technology. Custom-made."
Alex didn't answer right away. He could feel Batman's scrutiny—the way he was analyzing every word, every movement. One wrong slip, and the Dark Knight would turn his attention toward him in a way he didn't want.
So Alex simply shrugged. "I like to tinker."
Batman's gaze didn't waver. "Not many people in Gotham have that kind of 'tinkering' skill."
Alex met his gaze evenly. "Not many people in Gotham use it for the right reasons."
A pause.
Then, unexpectedly—Batman nodded.
Not in approval, not in agreement, but in acknowledgment.
He turned away, his cape billowing behind him. "Stay out of Joker's way. He doesn't let go of people easily."
And just like that, he disappeared into the night.
The Aftermath
Alex let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.
The encounter had been brief, but it had changed things.
Joker now knew of him. Batman now noticed him. Gotham had officially acknowledged his presence.
And that was dangerous.
As he left the rooftop, his mind was already running through his next steps.
He had reached Sequence 8 of the Paragon Pathway. His abilities were evolving. But if he wanted to survive Gotham, he needed to evolve faster.
Because this?
This was only the beginning.
