Chapter 16: Chapter 16: A Web of Masks Cold Nights and Burning
The Himalayan air was razor-sharp, cutting through Alex's cloak as he stood on the League of Assassins' stone balcony. He watched the valley below, where the distant glow of civilization flickered against the darkness. Even from here, he could tell that Blüdhaven was in chaos.
Fires burned in the streets.
Gang wars erupted overnight.
And at the center of it all?
The chaos he had orchestrated.
Alex didn't move, didn't smile, but inwardly, he acknowledged the success of his careful manipulations. Firefly had taken the bait. The Blüdhaven underworld was now at war with itself. And somewhere in the shadows, Deathstroke was taking notice.
This was how he worked. He didn't act directly—he nudged, whispered, and let the dominos fall. The League thought he was proving himself. In reality, he was proving just how easily the world could be reshaped when the right pieces were pushed.
The sound of footsteps broke his thoughts.
"You've been busy."
Talia al Ghul's voice was soft but edged with curiosity.
Alex didn't turn, his gaze still fixed on the burning city in the distance. "Haven't I?"
She stepped closer, her dark cloak billowing slightly in the wind. "Blüdhaven is unraveling. And you think that serves the League?"
He exhaled, the cold air visible from his breath. "Chaos breeds opportunity."
"And what opportunity are you looking for?"
Now he turned, just slightly, enough to meet her sharp gaze. "The same thing you are. A seat at the table."
Talia smirked, but there was no amusement in her eyes. "You're ambitious, Kane."
"Ambition without control is reckless," Alex countered. "But controlled ambition? That changes the world."
She tilted her head, studying him.
"And what world are you trying to create?"
Alex didn't answer.
Instead, he stepped past her, heading toward the stronghold's main chamber.
Talia remained standing there, watching his back as he disappeared into the darkness.
She had seen dangerous men before.
But Alex Kent?
He wasn't dangerous because of his strength.
He was dangerous because she couldn't tell which mask was real.
Gotham – The Bat Watches
Across the world, in a dark cavern beneath Gotham, Bruce Wayne's sharp eyes flickered across the multiple screens displaying live feeds from Blüdhaven.
Fires. Shootouts. Rising body counts.
This wasn't just random violence.
Someone was pulling the strings.
"You think this is connected?" Nightwing asked from beside him, arms crossed.
Bruce didn't respond immediately. Instead, he switched through the surveillance footage. Small incidents escalating. Key figures vanishing. A city shifting without realizing who was moving the pieces.
Finally, he exhaled. "I know it is."
Nightwing frowned. "Firefly isn't smart enough to orchestrate something like this."
"He isn't," Batman agreed. "But someone is."
Bruce's mind raced through possibilities.
Ra's al Ghul? The League? No, their methods were more direct.
The Court of Owls? Possible, but unlikely.
Then who?
His jaw tightened.
Whoever it was, they weren't just manipulating Blüdhaven. They were testing Gotham's response.
And he intended to find out why.
The Test of Loyalty
Two nights later, Ra's al Ghul summoned Alex into a secluded chamber deep within the League's stronghold.
The room was dimly lit by flickering torches, the scent of incense thick in the air. Shadows of assassins lined the stone walls, standing in silent witness.
Ra's sat on his throne-like chair, watching Alex with a calm intensity.
"You have done well, Kane," he said.
Alex inclined his head. "I live to serve."
Ra's smiled faintly. "Do you?"
A door creaked open behind him.
Two assassins entered, dragging a bound prisoner between them. The man collapsed onto the floor, blood staining his robes.
Ra's gestured toward the dagger resting on a stone pedestal.
"A traitor," he said simply. "One who thought himself above the League's will."
Then he turned to Alex.
"Kill him."
Alex stepped forward without hesitation, picking up the dagger. He met the prisoner's eyes—there was no fear in them. Only defiance.
Good.
A real assassin wouldn't beg.
Alex exhaled softly.
Then, in one fluid motion, he drove the blade into the man's throat.
The prisoner spasmed, blood pooling onto the stone floor. The room remained silent as he collapsed.
Alex withdrew the dagger, wiping it clean on the man's robes.
Talia raised an eyebrow.
Ra's smiled.
"You do not hesitate," the Demon's Head observed.
"Why would I?" Alex replied evenly.
Ra's nodded. "You understand what is required. And that is why I have another task for you."
A hologram flickered to life, revealing a familiar face.
Bruce Wayne.
Alex's expression remained neutral, but internally, he was already calculating.
So, the League was turning its attention toward Gotham now.
Interesting.
A Mission in Gotham
Alex left the stronghold under the cover of night, traveling through the League's secret channels until he arrived in Gotham.
His mission was clear: infiltrate Wayne Enterprises and uncover the research facility Ra's wanted information on.
But Alex knew better than to take Ra's at face value.
This was another test.
Not just for his skills—but for his loyalty.
He landed on the rooftop across from Wayne Tower, scanning the perimeter.
Security was tight. Too tight.
And then there was Batman.
Bruce had to know something was coming.
Alex exhaled, slipping into the shadows.
Time to see just how much the Bat was watching.
Blüdhaven – Firefly's Next Move
In an abandoned warehouse, Firefly stood before a gathered group of mercenaries and gang leaders.
The city was already burning.
But it wasn't enough.
"Think bigger."
"What if your fire wasn't just a weapon? What if it was… a symbol?"
Those were Kane's words.
And Firefly had been thinking about them ever since.
Now, he knew what he had to do.
"We're not just burning streets anymore," he growled.
His crew listened intently.
"We're going to send a message."
Firefly's mask gleamed in the dim light.
"And Gotham is going to listen."
Batman's Trap
From the Batcave, Bruce Wayne watched as Firefly's men moved across Blüdhaven, preparing for something big.
But Bruce wasn't watching just them.
He was watching the one man he couldn't yet identify.
A newcomer.
Someone Ra's trusted.
Someone who wasn't afraid to manipulate chaos.
Bruce's hands clenched.
Whoever this Kane was…
He was the key to understanding what was coming next.
And Batman intended to find him first.
