Chapter 321: C281
"Nick Fury ran away?"
At the headquarters of the Men in Black, Anton listened to Z's report, his expression mirroring the astonishment of everyone else who had heard the news.
He could imagine Nick Fury adopting various response strategies, but he never expected Fury to choose escape.
"You mean he not only ran away by himself, but also took all the Skrulls with him?"
"They're far from Earth now. We have no idea where they're headed..."
"Wait, is this a satellite image from outer space?"
Holding the report in his hand, Anton stared at the sleek spaceship on the screen, suddenly falling silent.
The ship had a striking design, sharp and elegant like a sword—fitting for the emblem of S.W.O.R.D.
"According to Maria Rambeau, who confessed after her arrest as the Director of S.W.O.R.D., Nick Fury orchestrated all of this," Z reported.
"Once the Skrulls' presence was exposed, Fury knew he couldn't explain it away. So, he simply took all the Skrulls and left Earth."
"Even if this information came from Maria Rambeau, it's still not entirely reliable," Anton replied after a moment of thought.
He wasn't sure if Nick Fury had truly left or if this was just a clever deception.
The key point was that, according to Rambeau's confession, Fury had taken all the Skrulls with him—meaning no Skrulls remained on Earth.
No one could verify the truth of the matter.
Relying solely on a single photo of a spaceship?
If the World Security Council truly believed that Fury and all the Skrulls had left Earth based on this one image, it would be naive.
Unfortunately, naivety was the last thing politicians around the world lacked.
Moreover, Skrulls could shapeshift. Once they assumed human form, there was currently no way to detect them.
This meant that even if Skrulls still remained on Earth, they would be impossible to spot.
"The World Council shares your concern," Z said.
"I've received reports that they've ordered S.H.I.E.L.D. to send the long-sealed Skrull corpse to our headquarters. Their sole request is for us to quickly discover how the Skrulls' shapeshifting works. Once we crack it, they plan to initiate internal screenings—one round after another—until they're sure no Skrull infiltrators remain. It seems they won't rest easy until every corner is cleaned."
"S.H.I.E.L.D. agreed to this?" Anton asked, frowning.
"Of course. What choice do they have? Nick Fury is gone. If the current S.H.I.E.L.D. leadership doesn't cooperate, the World Security Council won't hesitate to dissolve them entirely. S.H.I.E.L.D. is no longer what it used to be. They've practically been abandoned by the Council and have no leverage left."
"Understood." Anton nodded.
"Once the corpse arrives, I'll have it sent to the Justice League research base. As soon as we get results, I'll let you know, and you'll report to the Council."
"Got it. I'll arrange it now," Z replied.
"Also, regarding the Skrull situation, make sure to work closely with the World Security Council on a discreet investigation. Don't alert anyone else," Anton instructed.
"I don't believe Fury took all the Skrulls... Sure, maybe he took some, but there are definitely still Skrulls on Earth."
"Understood," Z nodded.
From Anton's perspective, the likelihood of a Secret Invasion occurring in this world was high.
The Skrulls were likely split into two factions: one group aligned with Fury, willing to cooperate with humans, and another—likely responsible for the Secret Invasion—intent on covertly taking over Earth using their shapeshifting abilities.
Whether Fury had caught on to this or not, Anton wasn't sure.
Either way, he knew he had to step in and clean up the mess.
After half a day,
sure enough, the corpse of the Skrull was transported to New York by special forces sent by the World Council.
The reason the special forces handled the transport was that the World Council, after confirming the existence of the Skrulls and Nick Fury's careful scheming, was both angered and terrified.
An alien race capable of shapeshifting at will had been hiding on Earth for more than a decade?
If this race were allowed to grow and carry out a secret invasion, who would control the fate of Earth in the future—humans or aliens?
Would politicians across various countries gradually be replaced by these aliens, wearing human faces?
The terrifying consequences were clear. The World Council urgently needed a way to counter the Skrulls' shapeshifting abilities and identify them.
For now, Anton's revelation of the situation indicated that he—or the Batman figure behind him—had more information than the World Council.
Furthermore, Anton was the head of the Men in Black, an organization under the Council's command.
Given the current circumstances, the World Council was more than willing to place its trust in Anton and Batman.
Anton himself was confident that he could develop technology to counter the Skrulls' shapeshifting abilities.
In the Secret Invasion storyline from the comics, the turning point came when Mr. Fantastic, stationed in outer space, developed a machine that forced Skrulls to reveal their true forms.
With this technology, Earth's superheroes—and even supervillains—were able to identify friend from foe, ultimately gaining the upper hand and reversing the situation.
Fortunately for Anton, Reed Richards—Mr. Fantastic—was now under his command as a member of the Justice League.
Though the movie and comic versions of events differed, Anton firmly believed in Mr. Fantastic's capabilities.
"This corpse will be handed over to you," said Hawke, the special forces commander, with a mixture of awe and unease.
"I can't believe aliens have been hiding on Earth since the last century... and for so many years, we had no idea."
"Don't worry, this matter is under control for now," Anton replied.
"We'll develop the technology to expose the Skrulls as soon as possible and prevent their ambitions from succeeding."
Hawke hesitated before asking, "So... you also believe that not all the Skrulls left Earth?"
"That question is irrelevant," Anton said calmly.
"If I truly believed all the Skrulls left Earth under Nick Fury's leadership, I wouldn't have reported his secret harboring of aliens to the World Council after more than a decade. Think about that for a moment—do you understand now?"
"That makes sense..." Hawke fell silent for a moment, then nodded and left.
A short while later,
Reed Richards and his three teammates arrived at the Men in Black headquarters.
When they saw the Skrull corpse—green-skinned, bizarre in appearance, yet humanoid in structure—preserved in a formalin-filled jar, they were visibly shocked.
"This is a Skrull? Born with the ability to shapeshift?" Mr. Fantastic asked, circling the corpse with curiosity and an intense desire to uncover its secrets reflected in his eyes.
"Yes," Anton confirmed.
"Your task is to use this corpse to develop technology that can reveal Skrulls in their true form. This is critical for the future of human society."
He added grimly, "Imagine a future where the people around you—friends, family, colleagues—have been replaced by Skrulls. Years from now, Skrulls could fully invade human life, and you wouldn't even know if the person next to you was human or an alien in disguise. What a terrifying future that would be."
