Chapter 50: Chapter 50 You said this place was full of bad guys
"Didn't Bullseye just get released? Have him take care of it!" Kingpin commanded coldly. "Also, send a legal notice to the Daily Bugle. I don't want any more stories about me circulating online. Tell the other media outlets to keep quiet about this, and to speak favorably of us. Do you understand?"
Wesley nodded. "I've already put things in motion. These media companies are smart; they won't make things difficult for us."
He paused. "As for the Daily Bugle, I'll make sure they understand Kingpin's power."
"Don't let me down again, Wesley."
Kingpin gave him a deep look, making Wesley's spine tingle and a cold sweat break out. He kept his head down, not daring to meet his boss's gaze.
Ring ring ring! Suddenly, Kingpin's private phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID, he frowned and answered. A few seconds later, his expression changed, his eyes practically igniting with fury.
Wesley, seeing this, knew something had gone terribly wrong.
This time, Kingpin's rage was unlike anything Wesley had seen before.
New York was about to erupt!
…
Meanwhile, at the Daily Bugle, Anton and Eddie were eagerly refreshing online comments about Kingpin.
The public opinion was overwhelmingly in their favor.
This was partly thanks to the Daily Bugle's long-standing credibility.
People trusted the Daily Bugle.
With the way things were going, Kingpin's true face had been revealed, and he could no longer hide behind the mask of a respectable businessman and philanthropist.
For Anton and his team, this was just the first step in taking Kingpin down.
The next goal was to find solid evidence of Kingpin's crimes and send him to prison for good.
The situation was similar to what they'd faced with the Life Foundation, but not entirely the same.
The Life Foundation had brought destruction upon itself, but Kingpin was intelligent and extremely cunning; he wouldn't fall so easily.
Thus, dealing with Kingpin would be even more challenging.
"Ben has gone to confirm his theory," Eddie said suddenly. "Once we have the results, we can immediately expose Kingpin's crimes and cast him as a criminal. When that happens, everyone will turn against him, and no matter how powerful he is, he won't be able to keep his freedom."
He was referring to Ben Urich, the fellow journalist passionate about taking down criminals whom he'd mentioned the night before.
Ben Urich knew how deeply rooted Kingpin's power was, which made him eager to work with the Daily Bugle. Having Eddie, an old friend, only strengthened that cooperation.
"Don't worry, you won't be disappointed."
Things were progressing exceptionally well.
Anton was quite satisfied, saying with certainty, "Kingpin was the one who killed his father. I'm sure of it."
"What makes you so certain?" Eddie asked in surprise.
"Because a guy as evil as Kingpin, it wouldn't be surprising for him to have done such a thing, even as a teenager," Anton replied cryptically.
Of course, that wasn't the truth. The real reason was that Anton remembered this storyline from his previous life.
In his past life, Daredevil had both a movie and a TV series.
Kingpin was a major antagonist in both.
Kingpin also appeared frequently in other movies and shows, given his origins as New York's, and even the country's, criminal kingpin in the original comics, frequently crossing paths with Punisher, Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, and other heroes.
So, no matter which superhero's world he appeared in, it was no surprise to see Kingpin show up.
The twist was that Kingpin's characterization varied depending on the version.
Once Ben Urich, through Eddie, had told Anton that Kingpin's father might not have died in a street fight but at Kingpin's own hands, Anton was able to pinpoint which version this was.
No doubt about it.
In this world, Kingpin was likely a patricide.
The reason was that his father abused his mother. Driven to the edge, young Kingpin ended up killing him.
And his mother, naturally protective of her son, helped cover it up, spreading the story that Kingpin's father had died in a gang fight.
For a place like Hell's Kitchen, where people died in street fights daily, nobody questioned it.
The living in Hell's Kitchen never cared about the dead.
And the police certainly didn't care about deaths in Hell's Kitchen.
It was a foolproof excuse.
To confirm the truth, Ben Urich tracked down Kingpin's mother, who was living in a private nursing home on the outskirts of New York.
Ben Urich was confident he could get answers from her.
…
Outskirts of New York, a private nursing home.
Ben Urich came out of the nursing home excited, clearly having found the answers he'd been hoping for.
The only regret was that Kingpin's mother was suffering from dementia and had very few lucid moments.
Without that, Ben wouldn't have been able to get anything out of her.
After all, as Kingpin's mother, he couldn't expect her to testify in court.
Such an elderly person's statements would hold no weight in court.
Even so, Kingpin's invincible facade was beginning to crack.
"This is huge news!"
Ben took out his phone to contact Eddie and confirm his suspicions. Just then, he saw a black car pull up in front of the nursing home.
Someone he hadn't expected appeared.
Kingpin!
Ben's eyes widened.
It seemed that Kingpin had tracked him down, walking toward him with slow, deliberate steps, an overwhelming murderous aura filling the air and making it hard for Ben to breathe.
This was the presence of the king of the underworld.
"Ben Urich…"
Kingpin's face was twisted with rage, his expression devoid of any humor. Only anger swelled within him, growing with each passing second.
Clearly, Ben Urich's actions had struck a nerve with Kingpin.
As Ben felt paralyzed by Kingpin's aura, about to face a brutal beating…
Whoosh! A red figure shot forward.
Kingpin quickly dodged, clenching his massive fist and colliding with the red figure.
"Daredevil!"
Kingpin looked at his familiar foe, surprised, and sneered, "Didn't expect to see you in the daylight. You really are pulling out all the stops to take me down."
"Kingpin, your identity is already exposed. You still have time to attack innocent people?"
Matt, now in his Daredevil guise, kept his focus on Kingpin's position using sound. He then instructed Ben, "Go, now!"
"Got it."
Knowing Daredevil was there to fight Kingpin, and remembering Eddie's cryptic words from the night before, Ben realized they must be allies. He turned and ran.
Kingpin gestured, and his henchmen immediately chased after Ben.
To Kingpin's surprise, Daredevil didn't move, keeping his focus on Kingpin, seemingly unconcerned about Ben's life.
Kingpin didn't dwell on this, gripping his cane with an icy expression as his massive form charged at Daredevil.
"Daredevil, this time you won't get away."
Matt pulled out his batons, and the two fighters—each a peak-level human—clashed intensely.
Not far away, Ben Urich, who had barely made it a few steps before being cornered by Kingpin's men in an alley, was now trapped.
Just as Ben thought he had nowhere left to run, a group of men in black appeared on either side of the alley and, without hesitation, opened fire on the henchmen.
Bang bang bang! Ben stared, dumbfounded, at the bodies before him, remembering Eddie's words from last night.
"Working with us won't disappoint you," Eddie had said. "We've got a support network you couldn't imagine. It's as if fate itself has ensured Kingpin's defeat!"
"So, this is fate?"
Ben muttered to himself.
…
Elsewhere, at the Daily Bugle, Anton received an update.
"Kingpin found out about Ben's visit to the nursing home and went there himself."
Seeing Eddie's worry, Anton smiled and reassured him, "Don't worry. Daredevil and the High Table's people are watching over Ben. He'll be fine. You should be more concerned about the assassins Kingpin sent here to try to eliminate us."
"Leave it to me."
Eddie nodded, scoffing, "It's been a while since I transformed. New York could use a reminder of the name Venom."
"Oh?"
Venom's voice echoed in Eddie's mind.
Venom grumbled, "Finally, I get to eat some bad guys? New York is nothing like what you told me—you said this place was full of bad guys!"
